Thank you! I’ve been waiting for a smart thermostat for my basement base board heaters!

Thank you for posting this video ! My Mysa thermostat would turn on, but it wouldn't turn the heater on. I live in Canada and for some reason the wiring in my house was the same setup as yours. I would've never thought to have setup the wires like you did until I saw your video. Thanks !!!

Just for clarification in the US which uses 2-phase, for 240v circuits, both sides are hot. There is no neutral (unless it's a 4 wire setup, which doesn't apply to these heaters). The old switch simply disconnected both sides of the circuit which is the safest as it insures there's no electricity at the heater when off. The smart switch simply disconnects one side of the circuit. There's still power at the heater, but the circuit isn't complete and the heater won't run (just make sure to never jam a fork or other metal device into the heater even when off LOL). Too bad Mysa cheaped out and didn't add another internal switch for both sides. If they did, it would have been a much easier as basically it would have been a wire for wire swap.

So many memories to my first home in Vancouver/Portland area with the Cadet heaters. The history of the area having vast amounts of hydroelectric power available ment such cheap inefficient heaters were still inexpensive to use. On the other hand vast amounts of clean energy.

When ever you work with electricity you first have to check if the thing like outlet or switch has still electricity with voltmeter so you won't be electrocuted

The video above doesn't show an extra safety check, but the manual instructs you to turn your existing old thermostat to maximum heat and wait for 5-10 minutes to see if the heater is still on (even after you turn the breaker off).

Hello David , Question? Can you raise or lower heat manually at the thermostat,or do you have to use your phone to control heat . Thankyou

@@williameisenberg1999 I just installed 7 of these in my house. Yes, you can change the temperature at the thermostat. Also, you can disable the manual control if you want to.

Also insulate - insulate - insulate, and make sure the house is well sealed from air penetrations. -- You might be able to get the local power company to give you the electric usage history of the house (typically by month) for the prior couple of years. --- just a thought

Long term you would be better to install air/air heat pump(s). Two key benefits - efficiency - around 4kW of heat for 1kW of electricity in on average, plus with reversible units you get aircon for the summer too. You can also get air/water heat pumps to heat your hot water with similar efficiency increases. Later you can dump excess solar sourced electricity into your hot water tank too!

That IS our long term plan - but that requires some modifications to the house that we're not financially able to do yet. ^Nikki

Transport Evolved: Take 2 Good! As others mentioned you need to make sure your insulation is up to scratch at the same time. I installed 8cm of interior insulation on the outside walls before adding the heat pump. For my 100m2 (~1000sq ft) apartment I used an 8kW Daikin outside unit and three inside units - considered to be the Mercedes (Tesla?!) of aircon units. With your larger property you could consider a phased approach - add some units for the most used rooms first and then add further units later as funds allow.

Nifty. How well is the house insulated at present, have you installed any additional insulation, do you think that you may install more insulation (in particular, external insulation) in the future? Have a great week T.E. team.

The only time Mysa would not like your wiring hook-up is when you have a 110V baseboard heater, which is not uncommon. On a 110V system it needs the "hot" in the right place in order for it to work.

@@TransportevolvedTake2 You may need to replace the thermostats again when you do this. I had to scrap the smart thermostat I bought as the smart thermostat had what is called a 'time proportional' control, this is a nice and efficient technique for conventional gas or resistive heating system they are dreadful for heat pumps. This is because the heat pump needs a few minutes minimum to establish a temperature difference before it can deliver any heat so when the time proportional control drops to a low level it just starts and stops the pump using electricity, but no heat! It can also destroy the compressor starter :-(

  • @bazoo513

Resistive heating? Smart thermostats will help, but they cannot do miracles. Have you considered a heat pump? Large investment, I know, but it will pay for itself in a few years.
Or are Oregon winters too cold for heat pumps to work efficiently? Perhaps you can use your well as the heat source for the pump?

The app sucks. It's a pain to create a schedule. You must remember to "copy day". If not you would think the schedule would work for one day only. Not! You also have to give the schedule a name! But wait! After that you also have to apply the schedule you finally successuly named and saved.
