BTCRecover Install + GPU Acceleration on Windows (Python 3) Crypto Seed, Wallet Password Recovery

  • BTCRecover is a tool that lets you recover from mistakes in your seed phrase or wallet password.
A quick guide that runs through how to install Python 3, BTCRecover and all required dependencies. It also covers how to install PyOpenCL in Windows so that you can enable GPU acceleration to speed things up for Bitcoin Core (and derived forks), Blockchain.com main password and second password, Electrum passwords as well as BIP39 and Electrum seeds.
    Github Repository: github.com/3rd...
    Installation Guide: btcrecover.rea...
Once you have done the process here, you can then follow the steps in any of my other BTCRecover related videos.
    ---------------------
If you are new to Crypto, my suggestion is that you start with buying ~$150 worth of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin @ Coinbase and get familiar with storing it, moving it around, etc.
For your first purcahse, just stick with CoinBase: www.coinbase.c...
For Trading, just start with Binance: www.binance.co...
By sticking with large, reputable exchanges for your first purchase (Coinbase) and first trade (Binance) you can avoid getting scammed right at the start by purchasing a non-existing coin off a scammy exchange. (You would be surprised how many people fall into this trap)
    Don't have a hardware wallet?
Be safe and buy them direct from the manufacturer. (Not just through some random on eBay, Amazon, etc)
    Get a Ledger: shop.ledger.co...
(If you are just starting out, I would just recommend a Ledger Nano S)
If this was helpful, feel free to send me a tip:

If you lost one word just use the defaults in BTCRecover (covered in my most recent video), select Eth and just add an 0x at the start of the wallet address. (after removing the ronin: prefix)

I have 23 words from my shelby wallet from Cardano, but I don't remember 1 and I don't know the correct order, apart from that I don't know the address, will this application help me decipher the missing word? even not having the address?

Oh boy, I am in trouble!!! I am 45 years old. I have a wallet 12 words and a passphrase. I've had this wallet for over 4 years. I had all my info written down. I've been in data entry for over 25 years. I never thought I would make a typo but apparently, I did... Honestly, I don't know what happened. So I changed to a new wallet and my Seeds and passphrase aren't working.
Then I found you as the top result for finding mistakes. However, Python is currently at 3.11, and many of the codes are spitting out errors. I tried to install Python 3.9 but it doesn't install the same way...
    Please any help?

@@CryptoGuide Honestly, I think I need to figure out how to install the 3.7 or 3.8 version.
Here are the issues I am running into.
This error originates from a subprocess, and is likely not a problem with pip.
      error: legacy-install-failure

      ╰─> lxml
note: This is an issue with the package mentioned above, not pip.
hint: See above for output from the failure.
I get this with instructions around 5:50 area of the video.
Also, I get issues where it says (coinwallet) doesn't work when I try to run the test code.
Also I think my driver might be upto date because I run on a MSI gaming rig and it won't let me down grade the driver... Maybe be an issue too not sure.

For running the actual recovery, you can just take your computer offline and leave it that way until you have done the recovery and moved the funds to a new seed. (If you just want to do it all on the same PC, in your normal desktop OS)

No, you want devices that will are offline before you enter the seed and will remain offline until either the recovery device is wiped or the funds are moved to a new wallet. (This is why using something like Ubuntu Live boot is the best option for most people)
If you want the system offline the whole time then you can easily side-load Python modules, but that is beyond the scope of what is easy to support in a video.

@@CryptoGuide I got it installed on Windows, thank you! Unsure whether these are bugs or more likely user error but here you go:
      1. Before installing PyOpenCL, the Full Test results are: Ran 617 tests using 12 processes. OK (passes=536, skips=81).
After installing PyOpenCL, the test gets stuck at electrum28 and gives a long error line about an array needing to be 1 or something. If I uninstall PyOpenCL, the testing works and gives the results above. I can send you the exact error if you need/want it.
I don't think I have a GPU but wanted to install PyOpenCL anyway to test it. Could that be the reason for the error?

The skips is just based on which modules you have installed, hardware, etc, so there is no normal...

I've upgraded the pip but now when I run the test:
      python3 run-all-tests.py -VV
      it shows me:
'python3' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

When trying to use the Ledger typos map I get an error typos map file xyz.txt has an empty replacement list on line 3.
I’ve tried to edit the file, check spacing etc., but still has an error. I did add the delimiter command too.
I downloaded Btcrecover a while ago and manually added the Ledger typos file if that makes a difference. Any suggestions?

The suggestion is to either find a backup of the wallet file or to move on with life, as it isn't recoverable without it.

G999 Core wallet is supported in BTCRecover (As it's just a clone of Bitcoin core)
Basically you install BTCRecover as per the video here and do a bitcoin core wallet recovery similar to what I cover here: ua-cam.com/video/8Zqc-2Te3zQ/v-deo.html (Except you don't need to use the wallet extract, multiple workers, etc)

Not at this time, if you aren't actually using your PC at the time it doesn't make a difference.

    • @CryptoGuide

What does "personal key" mean? Bitcoin core only has a wallet password... You can dump the private keys and then import them in to Electrum but honestly, if you have 30 BTC to recover, you are better off (in terms of security and minimizing the chance that you mess up) just wait for Bitcoin Core to sync and send them directly from there.

    • @CryptoGuide

If you have the wallet.dat file and don't know the password, then yes, you will need to use BTCRecover to attempt to recover it. (And the better of an idea that you have about what it was the more likely that you can recover it, raw brute-force only works for very short passwords)

If you have none of the seed words then this is an undercoverable loss. Your only hope is to stop using the computer immediately and try a data recovery for the wallet files.
