oil evaporates from the plants as you dry them. So yes. Maybe try with the green ones. But it'll still be extremely weak. You'd have to destil a large quantity of winter green to get the essence you want

Fullstop each time! Every time WB! Interesting experiment. I think if you had mortar an pestaled the winter green it would have released the oils. Also a slight "blanching" of the leaves in hot oil over the fire would've made the leaves release thier oils too. Just a thought, maybe bext time. Keep doing what ur doing bud.

There is not enough wintergreen in all of the north woods to make all of the natural flavored candy, and gum. The same chemical that is found in wintergreen is also found in the cambium layer of black birch, and to a lesser extent in, yellow birch. Pick a twig of yellow birch, crush it, and take a whiff.

You've made a huge difference for me. I've been an urbanite web developer for 15 years and it's people like you and these videos that made me realize I was in the wrong life. At 40 Years old I'm changing careers, moving from Montreal to Abitibi to study/work in forestry management and planning to learn a few gathering/hunting/fishing skills from the local experts along the way. I'm also thinking of maybe filming/vlogging this new journey of learning, in the hopes of motivating others like me that they can do it too. That's assuming I wont fail miserably, but why would I? Now that my heart's in the right place, there's no failing!

Farms often provide food for animals, which is much needed in years of draught for animals like deer. Hailstorms can decimate local populations of game birds to the point of not being able to recover, and crops like milo and wheat give a much needed boost. CRP is a program of leaving prairie land unplanted to give natural habitat for animals. Walk through a mile of CRP and a mile of milo and see what has more pheasants and prairie chicken (threatened species). Also, a large ranch with cattle does not usually drive out any species, and can often benefit the ecosystems.

I know so many people who only have a beard in the winter. It's annoying to those of us who embrace the bearded culture. We deal with our beards through the rain, heat and frost. Beard brushes all over the place so we can always brush it out. Those of us with longer beards ensure the constant hairs getting caught in jacket zippers and waking up with a beard that's a mess bc of sleeping on it. Like you i look at my beard as my approval as a man. Not saying anyone without one isn't a man. You are just a different type of man lmao j/p. Respect to all with or without a beard.

You could have filtered the cracklings with the winter greens, that's an old technique to filter milk for cheese production. From my experience extracting schmaltz it's better to keep the tissue from becoming a cracker because it gives away that fried fat odor, better to boil it or to bain-marie.

When rendering lard, the most benign lard for baking a pie is from kidney fat. That makes "pearl lard". I reckon a bear is the same way. Other fat can be utilized for everything else, but never make that mistake with bakery items. Pearl lard is making a comeback now among chefs.

I rendered and saved fat from a bear I got a few years ago and used it for boot grease. Worked very well on an older pair of danners but I read somewhere that some companies will void warranty on boots if you use bear grease instead of "approved" synthetic oils.

I feel that you should know how you have made a difference for me. I was never really big into a bunch of different meats. I prefer chicken and even that.. Only really boneless, skinless white meat.. Until recently that is. Watching your wilderness challenges I started being able to eat the fat and skin of chicken which always just felt like warm snot and made me gag. But because of watching you eating all these different foods I actially enjoy it. I find my mouth watering at the foods you make and because of what you have shared about native americans and how our ancestors had to live I want to start making the switch to at least better raised foods until incan hunt and catch food myself. Or in a shtf situation. I know i will be able to eat a raccoon and acctually really want to try it. You have made me think differently about different kinds of animals as food. You have made a difference in myself and my wife who also wants to try other animals. Thank you. You have shown me a lot and shown me different perspectives and also shown me a different way to think about food and where it comes from.
