Keep going mama. It’s hard juggling all the things. My allotment (not sure h the e equivalent in us/ maybe rented plot?!) was so over grown with vine weed and couch grass this year. I can’t keep up. Though it pains me tarp is my last resort after 3 years. I’m just planting into it and it’s helping keep weeds away

Thanks, I've wondered if I'm taking the right approach too. I don't think either way is wrong but there's always that "what if..." in the back of my mind. Tarping will definitely help, keep at it!
Thanks so much for watching, have a great weekend!

As the bindweed grows back, cut it at the base where it comes out of the soil and then paint the vine's "stump" with Bonide Stump and Vine Killer. It's sold in a small bottle with a lid that has an attached brush like nail polish. Use the brush to paint the weed killer all over the sides and tip of the bindweed "stump". Have a piece of cardboard or a rag nearby. Brush the rag or whatever with the applicator so that any soil that might have gotten on the brush does not get into the bottle with your next application.
I have had good success in areas where the bindweed is not so thick and I am checking daily for new sprouts to emerge from the ground. Once the sprouts emerge, I cut it and paint with the product. I often put a stick or some sort of marker in that spot so I can keep an eye on the treated bindweed.
After many applications, if you do not clean the brush, soil does get into the bottle and contaminates the solution. I find the product is no longer as effective. Thats when I'll start with a new bottle of Stump and Vine Killer.
You have given it your best effort at digging it up, its time to move on to using chemicals. I dealt with this weed for years. Digging I feel promotes further growth. You are essentially pruning it and giving the vine more growing points.
If round up is not for you, try Stump and Vine killer.
I had the best success by filling the area with large bamboo stakes and encouraging all the bindweed to grow up the stakes like a trellis. When the stakes were so full of bindweed, I sprayed the bindweed with round up two or three days in a row. The round up is most effective when the temps are high, in the high 80's or 90's. Then I let the bindweed bake in the sun allowing the glysophate to do the work, giving it time to travel down into the extensive root system. A month or so later, I finally cut the bindweed off the stakes and painted the stumps with Stump and Vine Killer.
I began to see a slow down in growth and the vines were not as strong, easier to remove from plants, the following season. Repeat the process a second season.
    Good Luck!!!

Wow you really have worked hard. I have my own battles with many weeds in my southern garden. I have used black farmers plastic from Amazon to snuff out the worst sticker vines. I used landscaping pins to secure it down and left it on for one whole year and when I removed it I was able to plant a nice long border of phlox and flowers and mulch. I have to occasionally hand weed but it’s so much better. If you’d like to try something different I suggest getting a roll of black farmers plastic and landscaping pins. Don’t give up. You’re on the way to creating something beautiful 🌹💐🌻😊

Thanks! Ya, in hind sight, I've wondered if I should have chosen a different path. It's all water under the bridge at this point I suppose. Glad to hear it's working well for you and you have your garden back from the weeds! Sounds beautiful

I'm a few years into my bindweed journey as well. All I can say is that time spent wedding at the end of the year is as important as in the spring. Keep it up!

Thanks! That’s good advice to remember, it’s very easy to let it slide at the end of the season 👍

Ugh can totally relate, I have it in a huge garden bed. I think I’m going to resort to the stump and vine killer. As much as I hate using it the battle is real.

i share your pain. after 6 yrs of fighting bindweed i have not made much progress. dig it, pull it, spot treat with chemicals. get lazy and it emerges triumphant yet again. round up may slow it but it will not kill it. i wish you luck.

Thanks! I'm looking forwards to planting them, but need to get them cleaned up first 😋

To actually get some of your plants into the garden area, use pots buried into the soil instead of directly planted. Landscape cloth around the outside bottom of the pots should keep bindweed out, soil and moisture in.
Paths could be covered with grass clippings 3+5 cms deep to block sun, or use wood chips, spare boards, paving stones where the weed is showing.
Unfortunately, ugh, you still end up digging.

The only way to not have weeds is to utilize all free space. It's good to plant ground covers or crowd the space with perennials. Covering the ground with coarse wood chips also works well, it's better than typical mulch made from bark because it breaks down slower and provides space for beneficial insects and fungi. All weeds that do come up should be cut at the surface using a garden hoe while they're still small. The cut off weeds should remain on the mulch to be broken down.

Basically, keep cutting the leaves only on the top without disturbing the ground. The root system will be weakened quickly and consumed by the ground critters.

This year I did the cardboard and woodchips method of "weeding". We'll see how it goes.

It works really well on a lot of weeds and its a great way to get a handle on a space. Good work! 👍

I feel your pain. I have spreading weeds on our allotment too. In areas where I'm not growing food I use as much salt and vinegar as I can - use on a dry day and weeds die off pretty quickly. For bindweed you might like Charles Dowdings video on it: ua-cam.com/video/Yf6SQ6gMA2s/v-deo.htmlsi=Z0JWsNu5WN4l2Zvt he has dealt with it a lot over the years. I think you'll find it useful.

Thanks, I've been following Charles for quite a while. He seems to have good success with his methods and that's my long term plan as well, once I get a good amount of the root mass removed. 👍
