What’s In The Garden
Canada
Приєднався 5 тра 2022
Come along with me through the growing season in our home garden.
I hope to share the successes and the not quite successes. The garden is a place to experiment, play and figure things out for yourself. It takes practice and patience to keep a garden running and I want to show you that you might not succeed every time and that’s ok.

Can you plant Potatoes in July?
What happens if you plant potatoes in July? Let's harvest and find out...
This year I fell behind and planted my garden on July 1st, and that included potatoes. Usually, potatoes are planted in spring so this was an interesting experiment. There were both benefits and drawbacks for this crop, and I'll explain them as I harvest these potatoes near the end of October.

Forget about YOU trying to tell whether it’s ready by what you think it looks like. All those roots growing in it tell you that it’s ready. Get that stuff in the garden!!! :)
You have a point! 😆
Kia Ora & Good Evening from NZ ...
Thanks! 😊
it looks tidy and purdy ❤ gg!
Well, you got a decent harvest out of it. More than some locations might have done. There were a lot of earthworms in there too.
Ya, there sure were a lot of worms! I'm assuming the compost I added plus the mulch and then the rain has made the worms very happy!
Kate, Your pergola is great, I would just like to ask you to give us the dimensions. You had to have them because you can't do it without drawings. If you don't have it, try to measure at least the overall dimensions. Thanks and greetings!
Hi, I don't currently have drawings for this project but I did measure some of the dimensions for an other commenter: "Sorry I don't have a diagram but I can give you some of the key measurements. The upright "posts" are 80 inches long and the top lintels are 48 inches long. (I think I bought five 2x4x8's and stretched the one for the top lintel as far as I could 😋) I used 24" wide mesh so I made the side openings to fit. It ended up as 24-5/8" opening so the mesh had a bit of space on both sides but still good overlap on the 1x2 that it's mounted to. I remember thinking that it looked HUGE once I had the pieces cut. But if you have the space for it and you plan on having climbing plants, I think this is pretty much the perfect small sized arbour because the plants will use some of the space. Hope that makes sense, YOU CAN DO IT! 👍"
My dad is having me plant some for my sister in our gardens 😭 they look like onions so I might try it out of pure curiosity now 🧐
Did you ever try one?

Nice solid job mate
The lady of the lake will be released here in Australia next Autumn 👍🫶🇦🇺😍
Cool! Mine seems to be growing well, very happy with it so far 👍
Good video and great looking compost. I'd like to see an experiment showing plant growth using the three different compost you have . Did run your leaves through a lawn mower or strimmer.
A for effort and great learning project. But sometimes when you weigh in the cost of your labour, tools and your time (which is very valuable to me), it’s worth paying that little bit more for ready made one as that did not really work out cheap
Brilliant, you are a star. I will be making one to fit my wheelbarrow 10 out of 10
Im looking to adapt a similar design to keep some planted hibiscus shrubs safe through the winter without digging them up...hopefully. How sealed do the edges, lid, and bottom need to be, or is there room for having a few gaps?
That could certainly be done 👍 The sealed edges part is tricky. Depending on your nighttime temperatures, it might need to be locked up tight. But if it’s sealed well it will certainly need to be opened during the days for ventilation but also it might get too hot on a sunny day even in winter. Unfortunately, it’s a judgment call on the best choice for winter care Thanks so much for watching, I hope the hibiscus make it through the winter 🌺
You jsut sifted the soil and threw it all back in
What changes have you made since you've had a chance to use this for a few months?
I haven’t made any changes yet. It’s currently packed away for the winter. But I plan to add proper hinges and maybe find some tape with UV resistance to cover the ends of the plastic panels. I’ll be working on it as I get ready for the spring season for my seedlings. Thanks so much 🪴
@@KatesGarden May I suggest using the silver tape used on flashing and air vent pipes? It won't come off, and it lasts for years. Check into it. I don't know if it will be the aesthetic you want, but it holds up in all kinds of weather and temps. Blessings! 😃
@@janeirvine8391 Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind, it sounds promising 👍
@@KatesGarden To quote my beloved Red Green, "Remember, we're all in this together. We're pulling for you. Keep your stick on the ice!" 😘👍
girl went above and beyond with this one.
Thank you so much!
Kudos to the woman who was able to complete this build. Very inspiring.
Maybe make 4 holes to run 2 pipes that tray slide freely. Better still to fix 4 bearing for those 4 holes.
I made one of these years ago. I love the notches you put in to nest in the wheelbarrow. I added handles that seem to help.
Lovely, looking for same... are you in Canada. If you are which province as I am in PEI...do you have seedlings in it...
I’m all the way over on the other side in BC. I had my seedlings in it this spring and it was working really well. I’ve now packed it safely into the basement for the winter. And then I’ll bring it back out next spring when I’m ready to get started again. I hope that keeping it protected over the falls and winters, it will last really well. Thanks so much for watching!
@@KatesGarden thank you so much for replying...
It's nice and good, but way too expensive with the plastic, why didn't u go with the 6mm foil?
I’m not familiar with 6mm foil. Thanks
@@KatesGarden Not I'm not sure if it's called like that, but it's the standard plastic transparent foil used for polytunnels
@@adriandavid970 oh I see. Yes that would be an alternative option. Some changes to the design of the frame would be needed but it would absolutely be possible and probably less expensive.
@@KatesGarden Definitely less expensive, I was "shocked" to see the price list at the end of your video...Anyway, thank you for the idea!
Did you shred your leaves first?
I didn’t shred them myself, but some of them might have been partially torn or crunched before I got them
Trial and error is a teacher.
It sure is 👍
Really missed an opportunity to have water come out of the gnomes mouth.
😆 Yes, that would have been a good choice too
Great DIY thanks
Thank you! 😊
Great job! Looks good!
Thanks! I’m so happy with it
Looking good! 💚

Good point! So far so good, I should make a garden tour / update video maybe
I just found you, I am so impressed. So well thought out of I can’t wait to build this this winter so I have someplace for my seedlings thank you
Thanks so much!
do you have a website with instructions please? thank you in advance
Sorry, I do not 🙁 I've been wondering if I should consider it though. It would be some time in the future if so. Thanks so much for watching
the magnolia is looking bad ass
Hey, that was great! Good camera work, and good job telling us what we were looking at. (I subscribed)
Thanks so much!
Does weed killer work?
It kind of works, the issue is the giant root system is still very likely to come back despite spraying. My impression is it would take many applications to make a noticeable difference to the plant. Thanks for watching
So sweet!
Thank you! 😊
You could MacGyver one of those solar pumps to water your garden bed from a rain barrel too I bet.
I sure it could be done!
I really like your style of planting and the way you designed your video . New sub keep up the good work and keep the maps.
Thank you so much! I appreciate the feed back on the garden map, I was hoping it would be helpful 😊
Thank you so much for the video - I followed your instructions as shown and now I have a sifter! Thanks again!
Glad it helped!
i share your pain. after 6 yrs of fighting bindweed i have not made much progress. dig it, pull it, spot treat with chemicals. get lazy and it emerges triumphant yet again. round up may slow it but it will not kill it. i wish you luck.
Thanks, you too
Loved the design, just wondering if the bottom seedlings would be getting enough light. Because even with constant rotating you'll cut the light in half so just wondering that part.
Thanks! This is such a great question and something I was considering while I was planning. My goal was to use this greenhouse just during the spring so the sun would be lower during the day. By the time summer approached and the sun higher, it would be warmer and the greenhouse not needed. (So I should be planting, or the more tolerant plants can sit next to the greenhouse outside to make more space) Also, because the upper shelf is only half as deep, it lets the light into the back more easily. If more light is needed, the greenhouse could be built taller so the upper shelf can be higher. Hope that helps, thanks!
Bindweed will thank you, for putting in the compost bin. It will root and flourish, even if the roots are dry to begin with. Burn them, and if you must, then sprinkle the ash! 😂😂
lol
Bạn có một khu vườn rất đẹp ❤ rất vui khi được gặp bạn ở đây.
That still looks like a success to me!🧄🧄 I will absolutely be adding garlic to my fall planting list! Nice work Kate! ❤❤
Thanks! Yes, garlic feels like a set and forget type crop, not much maintenance required just plant, wait, harvest 👍 Next step is figuring out how they taste and what we like 😝
Awesome, congrats on your harvest.
Thanks!
