I'm 76 now, and I remember when paying $5.00 for a kit was expensive! Now I have several unfinished models(that are probably older than some of your channel members)and I look forward to getting them to the finished stage once I get my cabin finished, and my shop in order.

Well, I'm 74 and was at it since I was about 20. I remember Airfix in a plastic bag for $1.00. In fact, I still have it, a Fiesler Storch. And it's still in the bag. I just inventoried my unbuilts and there are 307 of them. I joined the local IPMS and there were people who had more, so I didn't feel so bad.

My 13 year old grandson is visiting and he's really into WWII model airplanes. As a Grandma who has always loved hobbies, I've bought him about 10 airplanes from the hobby shops. He lives in a very rural area of WV and had never been in the kind of shops we have here in Spokane WA, he's loved every minute in them. Now I'm getting myself educated on building them in order to assist him better. I even got two models to build alongside him. I've made a list of the products from your video we still need to get. Thank you so much for this video!

By far the most difficult modellers tool purchase was an airbrush and compressor setup. It was also a very difficult learning experience for me to get good with the airbrush. However, I was super fortunate to have a brother who was a true hardcore advanced modeller move back to my hometown he allowed me unlimited access to all his professional airbrush equipment but taught me some good quality of life air brush hacks and open a whole new network of friends in the Canadian IPMS. Rest his soul and may he always be patrolling the heavens in his BF -109G. The most important secret of owning an airbrush is to clean, clean and clean it very thoroughly between paint sessions, this cannot be emphasized enough and eliminate so much frustration.

72 years old now, have lots of hobbies and keep very busy, but I thought that I might like to try modelling. Haven't done models since I was 15, but I figured what the heck, it can't be too hard. Was I ever wrong. Foolishly I got my wife to buy me a Tamiya 1/32 Spitfire Mk IXc for Christmas, because I love WWII planes. After reading the instructions, and watching several UA-cam videos, I'm now really worried that I'm going to have a lot of trouble just trying to get it together, let alone painting. And some of the painting videos I watched just had me shaking my head in complete confusion, with their washes, weathering, etc. My model has over 50 paints required! But I found your videos; tools to get, easy models to try at first, how to paint, etc. What a relief to have someone explain the craft as well as you do. Thanks so much. I'm going to get the Airfix 109 and ease into modelling, then tackle the Sherman, and maybe the Panther, and maybe then I'll be able to try the Spitfire. It looks like so much fun after one gets good at it, so I'll work my way up. And after every session modelling I'll relax with a good craft beer, cheers to you. Thanks!!

That's why I do this; I know this hobby can be tricky to get into, especially with all the offerings on the market today, but it doesn't need to be! As long as you're enjoying yourself, that's all that matters. Enjoy & happy building, my friend! 🍻

Like so many of us "older" guys I started out building car, plane, or ship models. Then as I got older my interest switched to hanging with my friends and girls, then college, a job, marriage, kids, 2.3 - two girls and 3 dogs, can't forget the dogs😄. As my life starts to settle down and my oldest off to college, I found time to come back to the hobby I missed. With retirement on the horizon, I need to build up my stash!
With any job or hobby, you need the right tools for the job. I used your video as my checklist, and I have all of your recommendations as my basic setup. You are correct, of course, brushes are nothing to skimp over. I transformed all of my old watercolor brushes for models, and they work great! The paint we use is another tool, which many will have their favorite type and brand. I still have several bottles of Testors enamel a few bottles of Tamiya, but my go to is Vallejo acrylic paints and washes, easy to work with a paint brush and airbrush really easy cleanup without paint thinner wafting through the air and house - pew!🤢
This is a fun hobby and there is always something to learn from everyone in the hobby. Watching Hank of SpruesNBrews gives a lot of tips and tricks I have learned to incorporate into my builds (and an adult beverage or two).
Thank you for your well put together and informative videos! 👍

Unlike most people, my parents don’t really have the money to buy me modeling tools, for example. For sanding I use nail file that my mother gave me that she found in one of her packs, for glue I’ll use some glue I found at a flea market, and for brushes I use some that I got at dollar tree. for cutting sprews I use some hobby knifes I got from my grandparents and my cutting Matt is just a sheet of rubber that I found on my uncles house that he let me take home and the models are mostly starter sets so I don’t have to spend a lot of money. Anyways I’m just gonna try to get a set of model tools, paints and higher quality brushes for Christmas.

that's all you need for now , the most important thing is to enjoy making them, when I was young boy my mum and dad had no money so I had to save up with odd jobs , but when I had enough I would buy a small 1/72 kit , It was so great ,no paints ever, but I still loved it , so good luck and enjoy

perfect. you dont really need a lot of expensive tools. #1exacto and blades is nice, but you can use single edge razor blades, or a snap-off type knife. heck a sharp pen knife will do too. Most things are household items, nail files, tweezers, pins, toothpicks, clothespins for clamps, masking tape. Back 100 years ago when I was a kid, before all these fancy tools, thats all we had, so we used them. I build alot of Monogram planes with the basics back in the 70s.

This is great! I'm 61 and started built my first kit, a Land of The Giants "Spindrift" in the late 60's. Really got into it from there. One of my proudest accomplishments was building a Space Odyssey 2001 Orion orbiter and lighting it up by painting the interior flat black and inserting a penlight through the bottom. I don't think anybody other than special effects people were doing anything like that back then.
The hardest thing back then was the Testers glue we had. It was crap and took the longest time to dry and if you were not careful, went all over the place. The glue available today is such a game changer.
Anyway, haven't built one in years and getting ready to get back in which is how I came on your video. Definitely picking up the glue for sure and possibly an airbrush and compressor.

The "Amazon Special" airbrush starter kit is a great recommendation. It was one of my first purchases as a beginner and I'm still using the same compressor today, 8 years later. I'd go one step further and recommend getting one of the kits that includes a tank. It's relatively inexpensive for the extra quality of life of not needing the compressor to run constantly through a painting session.

One more plus for an air brush is that you can spray any color you want. When I first started building models my spray choices were limited to what colors I could find in aerosol cans. I’ve been into modeling since the 60’s.

Really good run down of equipment for beginners. When I was starting out, I had to experiment with different items at the hobby store and then find that there was a better product out there.
In my opinion though, a beginner should get a few models under their belt before deciding on an airbrush to make sure they want to stick with the hobby. I still don't use one personally although I do want to get one eventually.
You've got a great channel and your videos are really professional. 👍

Heck yeah mate, welcome back to the hobby! I built a lot as a kid too and got back into it 5 or 6 years ago. The new kits out these days are absolutely impressive compared to the ones I built as a kid. As an older gentleman myself my eyes are definitely not what they used to be and I found a head worn magnifier to almost be a must have as well. Been pivotal in painting cockpits and some photo etch. Have a blast !

  • @jloki9259

I started building models around age 5 or 6. By 10 I was painting them fairly well (for a kid that age) and was lucky enough to have my parents buy me an airbrush - no compressor yet, I was using cans of compressed air. I still vividly remember finishing the Tamiya Panther that was the first kit I used the airbrush on - after some practice on old toy cars. As I looked at the camoflauge pattern and smooth surface the airbrush allowed me to attain I knew then that I had taken a giant step forward in my model building hobby. I strongly suggest that if you are building models and enjoying it and plan to continue - invest in an airbrush and compressor! You'll amaze yourself and never regret it!

One thing that I noticed in another video was a sharp stick to help place masking tape and for pressing edges down at seams. In the nail art industry an orange stick is used to push down cuticles on finger nails. Perfect for modeling also. Coast maybe $1.00 or so for each. they can be sharpened to a fine point or crease.

Thanks for another great video. I've been building plastic kits since I was 10 - I'm now 74 (do the math...). Even so, your videos give me new ideas, techniques and materials I haven't really used before. LOL - I may have to stop watching your vids, all these new ideas are getting rather expensive (new paints, primers, brushes, etc). My latest acquisition was 2 bottles of Tamiya cement - works great, I love that stiff little brush, very accurate application. BTW, I've began airbrushing with a Testors kit (canned air, cheap airbrush) many years ago. Now I use a compressor & a Badger airbrush - I still need to make 'practice runs' for some detailed work (like cammo patterns) so don't feel bad if you're still not 100% using an airbrush.
BTW - this video was great. These days there are so many products out there new hobbyists can certainly use a little guidance as to which products are essential and which aren't. Way to go Hank!

Just did my first Starship Model Kit from Polar Lights. The USS Voyager 1:1000 scale model snapping kit. Didn't exactly come out how I wanted it to as it was my first ever kit. Accidentally broke a small spoke of the hanger bay door so now it can't really fit into the 2 holes it was supposed to go in, but that's okay as it's not too noticeable. At the very least I got the kit together. The main problem I have is that my hands shake a lot with smaller pieces. After finishing the kit I went online to look for tips and tools to use. Your video came up and I think what you have chosen will help me with future model kits.

Hi, only recently came across your channel. Some really good advice for beginners. I by no means am a professional in any way but enjoy the hobby nonetheless. Like yourself I got back into it after many years away from building my first kit as a youngster and wow, how things have changed. Good advice on an air brush kit, as this is a good thing to get into. You don't have to go expensive and you will probably find just upgrading an air brush will suffice when you get better at it and that first compressor will be adequate for many many years.

The thing holding me back for years were "hobby" air compressors much like the one you highlight. I've owned 2 highly rated, quality hobby compressors - Paasche and Silentaire. Both were garbage, barely able to provide the psi needed, both leaked despite proper taping, and both companies were unable to provide replacement parts when the leaks rendered them useless. I got about 2-3 years of frustratingly low psi before they went completely pear-shaped. I bought an average quality industrial compressor with tank (for about the same price) and have never looked back. I always have the psi I need whether I'm airbrushing pencil lines, wide coverage, T-shirt paint (impossible for a hobby compressor) or even air up tires, blow out my PC and use air tools. And you can find them, as I did, in silent models that are barely louder than a hobby compressor and once it's filled, it doesn't run at all. It's somewhat larger /heavier than a hobby compressor but not by much. I can still pick it up with one hand and put it in my back seat. And they last far longer. My current compressor has so far outlasted both hobby compressors by double and it's still humming along like new. It's NEVER leaked. The difference in performance is VAST.
Hobby Compressors are a total racket. You deserve better so buy better. I'm particularly happy with my Fortress Ultra Quiet from Harbour Freight (my air conditioner is louder).

This comment comes out from my side because I realy liked your video and your suggestions.
Most of all I realy liked when you made the suggestion of a realy nice respirator, with adequate filters for vapors and solvents.
Guys (and girls) please chose one with soft smoth edges.
Onther thing that I believe should always be present in any recomendation - a well ventilated space - and why not a small fan at one of your sides, at the working table , it sends fresh air, guaranteed a permanent flow of fresh air towards the face, no gale is needed, just ensure a permanent breeze.
Glues, in general, act as solvents releasing vapors, a breeze, a side air current is enough to keep those vapors away from breathing by sending them towards a window, or an extractor.

New to the channel and excellent videos! one quick audio tip, i love the set up but all the brick and open space leads to a decent amount of reverb, behind the camera try and hang some heavy blankets if not acoustic blankets to cut it down. Its not noticeable on mobile I've found, but on headphones you can really hear it. Other than that i love the content and please, keep it coming! Thx so much for conveying price and availability to the younger crowd, and letting them really know what's in involved. I know this is just the tip of the iceberg as far as actual tools are concerned, but it's enough to get started for the firts time, or back into the hobby after (insert years here). Hey mate. Not new but returning and this is a great little video. The chances are whatever the various companies are charging for "modelling specific" tools, you can find the same item for a lot less. The same goes for a lot of the various "effects" products. That is not to say they are worthless, far from it, just look carefully. I use a mix of lacquers and acrylics (acrylics being Vallejo for occasional brushing) and with even a low cost airbrush I have been amazed at the results. Hardly exhibition standard (although looking at a lot of shows I can hold my own) but certainly better than I would have hoped for decades back. One item missing (I laughed at this initially....) a box of cocktail sticks or toothpicks. They really are the Swiss Army knife go to tool for me now. Burnishing canopy masking with the ends shaved flat, or sharpened for tidying edges, re shape and harden with cyano for sculpting tools, apply all manner of adhesives, smoothing fillers, applying masking fluid and crystal clear, filling small holes temporarily while spraying, holding wheels etc for spraying, mixing pain etc, the list goes on for the humble stick.

Use different glues for different jobs, tube glue for bigger parts, liquid for smaller parts. Use regular masking tape, works just as well. Get your paint brushes at the art section at a hobby store. I use a white cutting board for my work area, probably cheaper as well.

i started building and painting model kits when i was 14 or 15 years old back in 1984/85 back then we had to use paint brush and humbrol paint tins to paint our kits as i couldn't afford a airbrush never mind a compressor in 1990 i bought my first airbrush a badger 200 i had to use cans of compressed air with mixed results until a got a revell starter air compressor then i upgraded my airbrush to a Aztek i had that for 10 years until a upgraded to a harder & steenbeck infinity 2 & 1 then a got a cheap Chinese made dual tank compressor which was a jump up from my Revell compressor but it was very loud it broke down 5 years later and i bought a Iwata Smart Jet pro a great air compressor which is almost silent and i bought a Iwata Eclipse HP CS i already had the H&S infinity and Tamiya's spray works trigger type AB ... ive been building Model kits for nearly 38 years non stop ... i can't wear the face mask you showed as i bought a similar product it suffocates me ... anyhoo i like your videos ... i tend to airbrush Acrylic paints like Tamiya, Vallejo, Mig, AK and Akah

Air Brush is really nice to have its a life saver but dont set your self up to fail and really hone in on painting a model with out it. I started with RPG minis and that really helped me when moving over to air brushing cuz I knew how shadows worked and things like that. So dont just jump in and buy an air brush paint like 5 or so minis moving up in size as you go I did a giant sand worm before buying mine and like i said its really was the way to go. My only side note is if you are doing a car or tank or something like that then I would get a spray can at least for your first 2 or 3 models

I'm deciding from Kit 3520 (German Hanomag Sdkfz251/1), kit MM176 (SAS Land Rover Pink Panther), kit 35006 Pkw.K1 Kubelwagen), kit 3562 (sd.kfz 223 Leicheter Panzerspahwagen), kit MM146 (British 25pdr.
