You’re welcome! Even though you have the option to use raster elements in Illustrator, the program is really meant to work with vector primarily, and it’s not really equipped to handle a lot of raster effects. It overloads Illustrator. I suggest the following: 1. First make sure your computer system is up to date and meets the system requirements as detailed on Adobe’s website for the version of Illustrator that you have. 2. Try to implement all of the tips in this video to see if that takes a load off of Illustrator and helps it to allow you to use the raster elements after. 3. If it still crashes, you should do your raster element work in Photoshop instead. So, you can do your main artwork in Illustrator, but then copy it into Photoshop, apply raster elements in Photoshop, and complete your pattern there. Photoshop is much better equipped at handling raster elements. - Hope that helps!
Thank you for your response. I don’t use photoshop. It took me ages to learn illustrator and there are still tons I don’t know. Photoshop would be even more of a mountain to climb. But, then, maybe i’m up for the challenge. Thank you for your excellent videos which are much appreciated by me.
@@sheverleyclacken3676 You’re welcome. I hear you!- I remember very well what a challenge it was to learn these programs! There is a lot to learn. But I do recommend that if you're ever you’re feeling up to it, that you try to learn some Photoshop too. The 2 programs can compliment one another and it will give you an advantage. I will probably have some Photoshop tutorials up later on down the road too. I’m so glad that you like the videos- that is awesome to hear!!! Thanks so much!
The size of your pasteboard has nothing to do with how big your file is. Or at least not in any meaningful way. Vector art has the same amount of data no matter how large or small the shape is. To test this I opened a 947 KB file. I then scaled the artboard up by a factor of ten (from 4x1.5 to 40x15) I then scaled the art up to fit. After I saved it the resulting file was actually about 75 KB SMALLER. What actually will increase the file size is if you are using a lot of raster effects. The size of those will affect the file size. More pixels, more data. But if you aren't using any raster effects, then the size of your artboard is moot.

Thank you for that. Do you know why illustrator crashes ever time I try to create patterns using raster elements?
