      You eventually learn the layout of the levels but it is definitely a learning curve. It took me a while to grasp. The level design is definitely the worst part of the game. Especially the opening forest. It just has so many looping paths without enough landmarks. Plus those tunnels that you have to crawl through are supposed to be shortcuts but the fact that they are basically a long cutscene that is boring means I ended up just avoiding them because half the time I would take one and realize it was wrong and have to go back.

    1 thing I don't like about this game is that its HP & stamina bars kind of lie to you; their length aren't propotional to actual number.
    I felt betrayed when I found out that Tiel's health was 1/4 of Eredrim's (60/258), but Tiel's stamina was only twice as much (150/75). Tiel's strength isn't that strong, but he's even squishier then you might realized.
    Another thing is that I feel NG+ isn't well balanced? Player's strength basically peaks halfway through the 1st playthough. Weapon damage barely increases after +5; most abilities do fixed damage. Your output is hard capped by your stamina if you use a shell at all. So in NG+ and on, you either run pass most enemies or the gameplay slows down tremendously due to their massively increased health. Hitting corpses to farm resolve & staying back to wait for stamina regen aren't challenging; they're just boring.
    Weapon summoning/moveset swapping, and no shell with basically inf. stamina kind of alleviate the NG+ problem; but still, a lot to be desired.

    • @shadowhawk2750
      @shadowhawk2750 4 роки тому +6

      Glad I'm not the only one who though NG+ was broken and boring, and the extra reinforcement barely make up for the massive health bars of enemies. I did also realize the health and stamina bars were messed up, kinda sucks really, hope that they fix this or buff Tiel.

    So the bosses are Korean cakes?
    If you’ve ever been there, you know what I’m talking about.
    If you haven’t, many of the cakes don’t use sugar in the batter OR icing. They are, however, absolutely gorgeously designed with things that SHOULD be sweet, but aren’t. A common style is quartered fruit toppings with white “frosting.” 1/4 will have beautiful strawberries, 1/4 will have kiwis, 1/4 will have raspberries, and 1/4 will have blueberries. You see the frosting on the side and the amazingly fresh looking fruits laid on in their own little triangles on top. The fruits are the only source of sweetness, and there is only a single layer of them on the cake. You cut off a big old piece from the kiwi section as you are practically drooling over it. You take a bite and... the entire cake tastes like it was made out of communion wafers.
    If you see 75% of a plain white cake sitting on a table, you can safely assume it was originally covered with fruit toppings, but they were all used to sweeten the quarter of cake that was eaten.

    Honesty I think there is slight problem. The souls series started with Demon Souls and the combat despited being exciting was just a part of the overal thing. Dark Souls made it more focused and every subsequent souls or souls like game put some spin on the formula, but as far as I can see these types of games now come with some gimmic or two but never trully inovate. Guess I just think that this style was at the peak with DS 3 and now it is too stagnant to peek my interest.

      @sgt dornan I didn't mean to imply that DS 1,2 or 3 were not guilty of it. I think that combat came into its maturity in DS 3 and of course Bloodborn. What I ment is that this style of games stayed stagnant for far too long and now, well it does not have the same appeal.

Maybe in the future, if this team make success we will see a more complex mortal Shell with all the stuff lacking in this one title

    this game could be top tier but they might need to polish some of the boss fights as the ice boi hits you with invisible frames and lagy movement while the final boss was good but his wave attacks are buggy. they disappear half way through their attacks sometimes and you have to guess their location. for me personally the bosses could have been harder because they weren't the hardest part of the game. it was the smaller grunt enemies. i could defeat each boss within 10 try's but for an area it could take 20. maybe I'm just bad but if they could tweak the bosses it would be in my top 3 souls games. (even though it isn't a souls game)

    My favorite souls-like to date. Hardening is amazing, and I actually really liked all the bosses except for the end of the Obsidian area, and tbh the Mace-Staff absolutely rules.
    I also LOVE the environments past Fallgrim; the flame area has those huge statues of the veiled witch queens, and the winter area is super vertical and the transition from the graves to the underground winter area didn't make much sense (how do you get snow there), but I liked it. I also think that the fire area could have been longer, but I really liked that one the most.
    Overall I would give it a 9/10, but I really just like the imagery and the voice acting alot. In addition I didn't have as many complaints about the combat loop, I felt like it was very satisfying.

    idk bro I managed to get the whole main area map in my head so it wasn't really a maze to me. I finished the game a month ago and I still remember the map. I know pretty much every mushroom locations to far without having to wait minutes for them to recharge because you just end up running from one to the last and restarting the loop. I'm currently playing demon's souls and it's a nice game but I like the combat in mortal shell a lot more especially because of the hammer and chisel and it's first L1 R1 special ability and then using parry and riposte on the bosses with soloman. Like not even joking with the combots and tactics I had I was doing 500 or more damage to the bosses in 10 seconds because you can pretty much be invincible 2 times, 1 during hardening and 1 during the special ability attacks

    Enemy tracking is a nightmare, indeed. Enjoying the game so far, I'm so utterly hooked by its dark gritty art style though, I believe I would even say I'm ' liking ' it. However, hardening is really not my cup o' tea, I'm terrible at both parrying & evading, so I'm usually a ' shield guy ' in these games, so it's quite hard to get the hang of it here.

  • @L0rdLexan01
    @L0rdLexan01 4 роки тому

    I'd argue that the bosses were a high point. Each of them was fairly unique.
    Fire guy was very tanky and hard to stagger, not leaving many openings on his own and being countered by hardening to squeeze in extra damage.
    Ice Martyr was very weak to parrying, as it gives both damage and a full stagger, yet he plays around with his timings to encourage you to be patient, all the while teleporting quickly around to discourage hardening.
    Crucix was... kind of awful, honestly. His second phase is super tedious, though his first phase is interesting in discouraging high-aggression by making it so his poise is easily broken but his younger brother puts him on the defense. In exchange, his offense is pretty easy to shut down with hardening and parrying, play defensive.
    The Final Boss feels like a culmination of all of these; with powerful but open attacks, moderate poise, high health, and unique mechanics that both set him apart and make it feel like you've mastered the game when you fight him. The addition of weak adds into the fight also help call upon the skills of spatial management most of Fallgrim teaches, especially since they're your Parry Heal in the fight and can be killed in one shot otherwise.
    The Dodge/Parry/Harden system was an absolutely INCREDIBLE design choice. It does aggression better than Bloodborne by allowing you to instantly become defensive for a short time. However, the timer on it heavily discourages reactive play, more encouraging you to learn enemy startups so you know exactly when to leap into the fray.
    My only complaints about the game are how annoying some of the level design and enemies are. The Greatsword Ghosts in the fire zone sucked to fight one on one, much less the 2v1 you get later. And the enemies are in general so tanky that you're better off just skipping most of them. However, I did like the open-ended progression of the game for the most part, leaving all enemies (roughly) scaling the same, and the lack of teleporting bonfires and dedicated healing, along with the Bonfires being spaced VERY far apart made every trek a difficult, but fair feeling struggle. Only near the end of the game did I feel that they just started randomly throwing enemies at you.

    I enjoyed the bosses. I'm not particularly great at souls like because my play style is more hack and slash. So the bosses gave me a good challenge. But I definitely see how they aren't too challenging for better players. But like you said with the items changing your play style, using the great sword, or whatever it's called, made me slow down a bit and time things more. So this game really changed my play style too.
