Alrighty sir! Just planted my “Scottish Bucket Carrots” for the second year in a row! I always look forward to this time of year. Last year’s were fantastic. I harvested, washed and cooked them all within an hour and they were so fresh! Earthy, sweet, spicy. I couldn’t believe how delicious carrots could be. Best I’ve ever had. Still quite warm here in Bay Area California. First Fall rain coming this week. I’m guessing these will be ready to go by the holiday season! Done with my gabbing. Thanks, as always, for your guidance!
Carrots in buckets, bit of a disaster for me this year. Hope you do much better. Jim.@@jjj1981jj
My Mom is 91 years young. She loves to grow a few Tomatoes in pot on her front porch. I sent her a few new pots along with a selection of seeds. Than I sent her you UA-cam channel. She now has her carrots and potatoes growing and they are off to a great start. All because you are fantastic!!
Thank you for all that you do.
Showing how people of all ages can grow food with just a few pots..
old.....leave the stupid young...
31 carrots in a 10" pot is like unheard of. You sir have given me hope!
He’s meticulous….my kind of guy. The work up front produces better end results.
Seriously I saw this and said nooo wayyyyy
Notes for when you come back later:
1) make compost from things such as leaves, chopped seaweed, forest bark and wood chips, and soil from mole hills. Days or weeks before making this pot, let it dry a bit in bucket. (Makes sifting easier). Sift the compost through anything that can sift out big pieces, you can use a plastic basket. Keep the sifted out big pieces such as wood chips for later.
2) add extra organic amendments in powder form such as coffee grounds, dried manure and important for carrots: sand, and mix.
3) put the big pieces like wood chips that were sifted out earlier, in bottom of pot, it's good place for roots that do reach the bottom, and then fill pot with compost mixture.
4) Press down mixture evenly with something flat the same size as the bucket opening. Pick up dry seeds easily with moistened matchstick, using a DIY mesh for guidance. Give the seeds very light spray with water and lightly cover with compost and press down again.
5) seeds will germinate after a few weeks. Keep compost moist.
6) Carrot will come after 4 months. Always harvest all carrots at the same time otherwise carrot fly with come.
7) enjoy!
No mole hills here in Ireland. Are moles useful to gardeners and farmers? For example, do they eat mice and rats? Do they aerate soil?
And for those who think for some reason that dogs shouldn’t have vegetables in their diet, my dog lost half his fur from an unknown food allergy so we cooked him potatoes, spinach, carrots and peas mixed with ground beef for a few months and all his fur grew back :)
I germinated carrot seed-colmarcoeur rouge- on tissue and planted in pot. 5 days later every plant showing 100percent success. Thank you for all your advice.
I don’t even understand why people believe this when dogs were once wild 🤷🏽♀️
This is probably one of the best instructional DIY videos i have ever seen. you maximize yield per square foot. all organic growth. I am stoked about doing this.
I really enjoyed your video and the grid pattern...going to try this
Great garden tips as a retired Gardener who can’t do my allotment due to arthritis this is a brilliant way to grow carrots lovely man
Dscribes Everything In easy stages great video
This may be the very best gardening video I have ever watched! So full of useful information and not too much extra talking. I wish this guy did audible books-what a wonderful voice. 💕
In 2017 you said it's not the end of the world, but in 2021 those carrots might be a matter of survival. Thanks for the tip on carrot pot growing.
Don't pay attention to these cruel people that make rude remarks your videos are awesome I've learned a lot from you and Molly's great love you Molly
I didn't find any to support your claim? This guy is great, isn't he?
Jan Ek don’t you just hate an asshole just so unnecessary for us to have more than one of them rude people
What is he putting in the bottom of the pots & does he have holes in them? Thanks!
Grammapamm it is the large clumps of soil, twigs and bark that he extracted from the compost at the very beginning of the vid. And yes, there are holes in the pots.
I love rewatching this video because of how happy Molly’s face looks while you are washing and counting the carrots.😄
This man is AWESOME!! I wish he was my neighbor. I learned a lot from this video. Wow!
I agree with you Carla.. He is great! Liked and subbed!
Nettie Reynolds I know you and Carla are not lying! What a talent
Think we could live in the same street? I wanna share him too! 😄
Totally agree!
I love the videos, just wish I could understand him better. Lol
I’ve tried growing carrots for years but never did any good in my clay soil. So what a brilliant, amusing and lively instruction video. So patient and painstaking, like all good teachers he repeats stuff in case you missed it, very well thought out. I love the way he recycles stuff. What a fun and enthusiast guy! Thanks for sharing. And luckily I have carrot seed, blood, fish, Bone, sand and home made compost. I shall really give this a try. Thanks for sharing. Molly must have great night Visio by now:-}
That's a great bucket of carrots you have that down to an absolute art.
I love these start to finish videos, I have watched this one twice :) The only thing that I would suggest is if you could put the date on the screen when you change times, for example, from sowing to harvest or when you show updates, so we can see how much time has passed by. Don't stop with the videos, I love your experiments.
Don't you agree? Of you course you do! Lol love his jolly personality 🤗
😘
@@jodare6454 Me too.😊👍

Always think of your garden as an art form. You're creating art.
The time and energy used is making your garden more beautiful. Just like anything you want to create.

AND ~ edible! YUM!!!!!
Oh and Molly is a Precious girl, loves her carrot treats! Thank you
I've watched quite a few gardening videos the past few weeks but I would be amiss if I did not comment how inspirational this VERY informative and calming production has been for it to be be my first ever comment, looking forward to binge-watching these others. Regards from New Jersey, USA
I totally agree! Minnesota, USA
I have learnt a lot from your video and l put into practice thanks
*remiss
I whole-heartedly agree! Jim's presentations are sweetly addictive. He mentions his success & failure, & shares them with us so we don't have to go through the same ordeals. And I already have binge watched!!! Until early morning hours. I've had to moderate my watching as not much else was able to have my attention, including my garden!!! :D I've been thoroughly inspired after a long period of being unwell & depression as a result. Home Grown Veg was my drug of choice! No bad side effects! :) Thanks to dear Jim and the precious late Molly.
What a down to earth and relaxed chap, loved watching this. Reminds me of my dad in his garden back in the 70's. Thank you so much.
That’s the way to go through life….relaxed and laid back. My grandfather was the same way in the 70’s, and he taught me all about gardening, patience and relaxing lol
Molly should have her own show. The veg growing is second to none and I've learned so much from it but Molly is the star.
Best container carrot video I've watched. Love the music choice. It was so simple and interesting, I didn't even realise a whole half hour had passed.
I’m hoping to move house this year, so I’m intending to grow as much of my vegetables as possible in pots , with your help , so thanks Jim for sharing your experience, lovely to see Molly enjoying a carrot again x
Brilliant! This has to be the best container carrot instructions that I’ve seen by far. Definitely going to give this a try. I can’t wait.
Its all in the planning and preparation. A decent soil mix with no obstructions. Take your time to sow the seeds thinly. A light spray with water every day is good and avoid hot direct sunlight in the early stages. Don't let them dry out and if you have added your fertilizer to your mix, its just water after that. Ps Don't restrict yourself to just one bucket or you will regret it. Good luck and keep us informed. HGV
How to avoid carrot fly - grown in pots or troughs and place the container 3 feet above the ground. Carrot flies don't fly that high. It's worth a try.
this guys accent alone tells me i can trust him on how to grow root veggies. cant understand half of what he says but the visuals sure help. thank you good sir.
Annie Bananie I think he’s from Yorkshire England.
@@exb.r.buckeyeman845 I suspect he's a Barnsley Lad, wonder how close I am....
I would say Barnsley area too but definitely Yorkshire. I was born in Mexborough but I lost my accent as I moved away when I was 8.
@@rebeccamarie5839 this man sounds Cumbrian to me
You can say that again. And I believe we be missing something important.
It will be a pleasure to grow carrots in a 10" pot using your system. Wow!!! Wonderful!!!
THIS FELLA IS FANTASTIC! AND THAT ACCENT, IS GREAT I CAN ALMOST SEE HIM....WHAT AN EASY VIDEO
Digging the juxtaposition of hip jazz with sifting compost and planting carrots 🥕!
I've been wanting to grow carrots in my tiny apartment, but never dared to because of space constraints and the fear that I might be expending a lot of effort for 1 or 2 carrots. Your video is so clear in its instruction that I now have the confidence to try it. Thank you so much!
Also grow some potatoes in buckets, also in separate buckets do garlic and onions! ❤Easy to grow and 1 potato will yield 2-3 lbs (15-20 potatoes) water them really well when the green tops appear and keep watering all along to grow good size spuds. Just 100 days to harvest it’s the easiest thing in the world and will provide you a wonderful food source. They grow great indoors and if you have a balcony or a way to set them outside in good weather even better.
If you never tried to grow plants to see how difficult it is and what a great satisfaction at the other end awaits you, you should give it a try. And yes, dogs and other animals eat grass or greens in general as part of a diet. Great video, Sir, I loved watching such a big yield in such a small pot. This is the time when we should become self-sufficient; such organic carrots are much cheaper than those in the store. Please post a video on how to grow carrots for seeds! Greetings from America!
That was a great harvest! Those carrots looked so nice and healthy! Molly is so beautiful!
What beautiful compost you have. I'll be starting my first 10" pot this very week.
That was awesome, if I produced that, I'd weep. Simple and concise. In these troubled times it's someone like you that reminds us of the important things in life. So sorry you lost Molly, she was a great companion.
Just found your channel and what a great find! Only just starting with buckets and your style of “teaching” is perfect for me. Not so in a hurry that I have to keep rewinding, what a relief. Thanks
Wonderful. Thank you so much for this information, your enthusiasm and Molly. Keep up the good work.
I love your sense of humor especially talking with and about Molly . I have learned a lot from your videos. Thanks so much.
Molly just made my day! My border collie loves carrots too ❤️🥕 I can’t wait to share homegrown veggies with him 😊
Very inspiring, and what a high density yield! I love how Molly gets the first carrot. She does a great job of trimming the top off.
Impressive haul from less than a square foot, well done! I'll definitely be doing some carrots this way, as well as leeks, this year. Thanks for posting!
When I saw your brilliant idea last year, I bought an old tennis racket at a garage sale. I use that as my sowing grid. Works great. Many thanks. Good to see you back at it again this year, and loved watching Molly eating her carrots & having a grand time at the sea shore. All the best to you both HGV! Cheers from Canada :)
Sophie Daley a tennis racket! = Brilliant!
It's fun to see someone who gets as excited as I do about a successful harvest :-)
Excellent....I am on my way to pick up a childrens racket at the dollar discount store. cheers and thanx for the idea.
Mee too :)
Oh my goodness! I was sitting here wondering where I was going to get the grid from 🤗 one of my children’s tennis rackets lol - i’ll buy a new set for them later - thnx!
I am really impressed by the results of this guy s effort. 37 from a 9 inch plantpot. I like the idea of grid planting. He sewed 50 seeds. Dog Molly ate 2. I am watching again and learning from him. Thank you for.bringing this.
Love your sieve! Thanks for showing your veggies from start to finish so we can see what we should end up with at the end.
Love your video. Have a 19 year old autistic son who loves gardening. We have limited space. And use pots and tubs to grow. We have learned much from you. Thank you.

Yes we have a plastic dustbin and we are trying that this year. We built a bean frame from saplings we cut from the hedge last autumn. Kept them and made a bean frame.
We going to have fun hope you do to.
Thanks
Love your videos too! Have learned so much! And just love Molly. What kind of breed is she?

What a great harvest! Molly had a great time at the beach you can tell she loves it! Thanks for another awesome video
Love hearing the mind from overseas..as My Daddy was very engaging with his humour and pleasant chatter ..Thankyou Ta
it looks amazing and Molly is waiting for her bite of that organic carrot.
Oh I am inspired! I've just started my first container garden in many, many years. I've got potted potatoes, tomatoes, peas, beans, zucchini (courgettes), summer squash, onions, and radishes. I planted some carrots, but have yet to see them pop up.
Molly reminds me of my friends' dogs from years ago. They loved carrots so much that when the word was said, they'd run to the fridge and start begging. The family had to start calling carrots "root fruit."
I have watched this video many times over the past couple of years and it still impresses me, every time I watch it!
I just love your much information you and Molly are so cute together. Thanks for showing us! 😃
Nice start to finish display on how to grow carrots James! Good source video for folks to play over and over as needed with fantastic results.

That is such a great idea! My carrots are crowded and I'll need to thin them out, which breaks my heart. I am SO stealing this idea!! As brilliant as the grid is, the best part of the video was Molly. She is beautiful!

My family has grown carrots for years like this, they are really delicious and great for an on the go snack for the little ones in your family. Great video, pay no attention to the negative remarks, this person should stick a carrot were it best fits lol.
This video and the others were he start to show how to plant then are ( genial) great exactly what I was looking for.
I absolutely love the grid!
Nor have I grown carrots like that so am impressed with what one can do with limited space! Nice! Lovely to see Molly licking her chops on the sidelines in anticipation of eating carrots! Oh, Molly, Molly; my love of dogs keeps me coming back! Lolol! She is an adorable charmer and aren't you the blessed one to have her? Greetings from a grandma in WA state🙏👵💖🐕🌌🌲☔😁

the best video on how to plant and grow carrots
I think that’s a great way to grow carrots! Your instructions are simple to follow and very helpful for someone like me. I’m looking to start growing my own organic food, and using your methods will help me out a lot. I live in a trailer park and the owner doesn’t really want me growing stuff in the ground, so this is an answer to my prayers literally! Thank you so much for sharing! Great video!!!
Hello Lisa. I do try to help disabled gardeners with advise wherever I can. For someone with strength / access issues these small 10" buckets are worth considering. Not to heavy when full and stand great on a patio or path or any flat surface. If dexterity or eyesight are the issues seed mats or tapes are an option. No seeing or picking up small seeds. Check this out: ua-cam.com/video/787G55-v9Bk/v-deo.html
I am going to try this today. Awesome. Thank you ☺
You impressed me with so much of tender loving care (TLC) you put in in the preparation of the soil!
Thanks for sharing your expertise!
Soil, and water are inputs. Would you wanna eat poppy soil or oil tainted water?
Its "tender love AND care" lol but your way works too
Thank you from Australia, I’ll be trying this later this year. My dogs love their veggies too. 😊
