    In this ultra rare video (this marks the first time it has been shown publicly in its entirety), Mike Mentzer puts Boyer Coe through his 67th workout at Nautilus Sports/Medical Industries’ television studios in July, 1983. Boyer is shown performing a “maintenance workout,” which was Arthur Jones’ attempted solution to Boyer not recovering adequately in between workouts (Jones believed in whole body workouts performed three times a week no matter what). Apart from the historical significance of this video, it perfectly captures the wise cracks and banter between two bodybuilders and friends (when Mike accidentally kicks Boyer’s cup of water over is particularly funny). Once again, this is not Mike’s Heavy Duty system that is being employed, but rather Arthur Jones’ high-intensity training protocol; Mike is simply supervising Boyer’s workout according to Arthur’s directions.

    It should be noted that these are two very accomplished competitive bodybuilders. I wonder who the intended audience was or these videos originally?

    4 weeks ago I did barbell curl 1 set 30kg 7 reps to failure, today I did exactly the same! This shows that even after 4 weeks no training you don't lose strength! The biceps lost 1 inch of its size for those 4 weeks tho... I am usually doing each muscle group every other week and this way getting stronger and bigger with just 1 set to failure.

      Thank you for clarifying. I am training every 7 days currently and making some strength gains every session. When I had COVID I didn't train for over an 30 days and didn't lose any strength despite feeling poorly for three weeks!

      @@Andrew-lx4dc Awesome! I tried before COVID Dorian Yates HIT so training the same muscle group every 7th day with 3-4 sets to failure and size was going up but strength very slowly was increasing. I would say that training for muscle strength is quite different than training for size.

      @Andrew-lx4dc 15 днів тому

      I agree. With hit I gain strength but not a corresponding amount of size. With volume training I gained neither! Luckily I am more concerned with strength and maintaining a healthy body fat level. I also want to protect my joints at nearly 60.

    Thank you for the upload. It is very interesting to see the changes MM made during his career. I am almost finished reading Heavy Duty II: Mind and Body. He talked about his adjustments based on the success or lack of success of his clients. This clip reminds me of his changes from 8 exercises to 5 or even fewer.
    Does anybody know if Nautilus machines are still a thing? I can't find such machines in Germany. Are they still in use in the US?

      It’s highly individual…everybody has variations on how well they recover, and how intense they should be going. I personally haven’t really made any progress on the classic “Heavy Duty” routine. Full body 1x a week is where I found to be the most effective for me personally…

    Thank you SO MUCH for these videos!!! I trai Heavy Duty with progressive overload for two sets for each movement. No more than 4 reps on the second set because of how slow i move the weight and cotract it.

    Allow me to ask you a question:
    If someone is training unsupervised and/or without a training partner, could adding some isolation exercises help increase effort and therefore training efficiency?
    Thanks!

    Are maintenance workouts really necessary if one is training at the correct frequency?

    • @HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE
      @HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE  15 днів тому +4

      Not in my opinion. I also can't find any evidence for Mike believing in maintenance workouts for those seeking to get bigger and stronger. As Mike indicated, there are those who have a better tolerance (a genetically mediated trait) for exercise, who might be able to tolerate a maintenance workout in between their real workouts, but the fact that you're still working your muscles in a demanding fashion (as evidenced in the video) means you are using up recovery resources that now won't be available for serving the needs of the growth process. Just my opinion.
