    Director: James Whale
Starring: Warren William, Gail Patrick, Ralph Morgan, William Lundigan
When a ruthless District Attorney cancels a vacation with his wife to prosecute a crime of passion, he fails to notice that his life is moving in a disturbing parallel track with the defendant's -- a path likely to lead to an unspeakable tragedy.
TRIVIA: James Whale, the legendary director of FRANKENSTEIN, was so intrigued by this story he filmed it twice, earlier in 1933 as "The Kiss Before the Mirror."

Gail Patrick (Lucy Stowell) later went on (as Gail Patrick Jackson) to develop Perry Mason as a television show and produced all nine years. Close friends with Erle Stanley Gardner (her husband was his Literary Agent) she was key in casting Raymond Burr as Mason (against CBS’s hesitation).

Erle used to bow and arrow hunt with my grandfather Dr. George A. Cathey, who had a reputation as an amateur sleuth, solving several crimes in the Pacific Northwest, Portland, Southern Washington. He and his Dr. brother Collie Cathey developed a method of bringing out fingerprints that had been bloody and wiped away. My dad suspected Burr was chosen partly due to a resemblance to Dr. George. I don't know, but it is interesting.
When they hunted Erle had a long Airstream along and several typists to whom he dictated his stories after the day's hunt.

I read where they wanted William Tallman to be Perry Mason and Raymond Burr for Hamilton Burger.
They were both noir heavies and who knows how long it would have lasted that way.

Wonderful! Touching, personal argumentation against the death penalty. I met Milburn Stone in 1968.

I love Warren William in these old movies as well. He was devoted to his wife who was 20 years older than him and passed away shortly after he did. ❤

A boat for Europe, what a thought. A Transatlantic ship like the Queen Mary. Something safer than the Titanic. Warren William died at the age of 53 from multiple myeloma in 1948. His wife, Helen, who was 17 years older, died a few months later. Considering the relatively short time span of his acting career, he had an impressive filmography of 27 films one of which was the first filming of the Perry Mason character. He died a year after his last film, "Fear", which was released in 1947.
After retiring from acting in1948, Gail Patrick (Jackson), became president of Paisano Productions and executive producer of the Perry Mason television series (1957-1966). She was one of the first female producers, and the only female executive producer in prime time during the nine years Perry Mason was on the air. She served two terms (1960-1962) as vice president of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and as president of its Hollywood chapter-the first woman to serve in a leadership capacity in the academy, and its only female leader until 1983. Not just a pretty face and figure but a clever head as well. With an impressive 60 films under her belt and four marriages, she died of leukemia in 1980 aged 69 in LA.

Gail Patrick was lovely and smart. She put Perry Mason and Raymond Burr on the TV map!! I believe the house front was used in the 1934 version of Imatation of Life.

The way they made the maid behave was cringeworthy racism. She was the best actor in the film. It took skill to act that dumb and also be funny.

I'm always up for a Warren William film. He lifts any role he inhabits. I never know whether to boo or cheer when he is on the screen. Maybe both ;)

This was pretty mediocre. James Whale should have stayed with horror films. It’s disgraceful the way they handled the character of Creola the maid. Lucy was hot and she should have left and told Jim I’ll see you in divorce court, you dirty slob!
