I got to see your video because I was searching up "How to Grow Burro's Tail" on youtube. I'm an industrial Design student and our midterm project is going to be designing planters. I chose this plant to design a planter for it. You explained everything in such a fun and easy way for me to understand. I'm sure you're a fun person to be around in real life, too! Thank you for the video! :)
so let me be sure I have this straight: If you touch it too much, it will rot. If you water it too much, it will rot. If it gets too cold or hot, it will rot. If you look at it cross-eyed, it will rot. Sounds like a joy to grow!
Lol... true, but... if ya just set them in the right spot and basically ignore it with just sparse watering they will be fine! ... as long as it is the right spot... oh and when u water it, it might die... see, easy! 🤣😂
It’s not nearly as bad as it is made to seem in this video. Also this poor plant has been grossly under watered. I would bet he is using a peat soil and that is hard for all succulents because the soil compacts and becomes terribly hydrophobic so the soil with water quickly draining out of the plant is because the pest won’t absorb any water because it’s compacted and hydrophobic this you’ll get donkeys tails looking like this in the video. Use a coco based mix. I live in PHX, a hot dry place but I use a fox farm coco based mix called salamander (or coco loco for more humid places). Ya it holds water but not saturated pools. Salamander is the best for summer because it evenly distributes moisture that’s not sopping wet and will not rot plants (similar to the moisture of a freshly opened bag of soil after giving the plants a chance to drink like they need to to survive). This burros tail needs a good soak and then left to dry and soaked again and dried before I personally would change the soil. Edit: dehydrated burros tail hold their leafs better so transplanting while it’s dehydrated will save you from losing too many leafs but put the leafs you do lose in the pot that it will eventually fill in the gaps and holes.
@@erins.5420 uh, it was under watered purposefully because, you know, it gets cold in St. Louis. I'd bet it is either in the whatever mix it was purchased in or his standard succulent mix of miracle gro cactus mix, coarse sand, perlite, and paver base. So, yes, there probably is peat in it but so heavily amended that it doesn't compact. I couldn't grow it anyway. I live in south Florida. We have two seasons: hot, wet and humid or not as hot, humid and dry. Unless you're using almost pure sand here, most succulents roots rot off and even then a lot of them rot in the hot, wet summer.
This is my third time buying donkey’s tail, first 2pots desiccated, rotted. After watching this video I know it will thrive. Thanks for this video. Watching from London!
As soon as I met mine at the Nursery, I fell in love. I picked it up and it started to drop some leafs and I called it Big Lil Asshole. I asked the owners of the joint what the name of it was and they said Donkeys Tale. Yup. Asshole. The name stuck. I love my Big Lil Asshole. This was a great video! Thanks friend.
This plant brings back so many great memories for me. My stepgrandma, Big Mama, got me into flowers when I was a little girl and, around the same time, my Granny gave me Hens and Chicks and a Burro's Tail. From then on, I was a gardener. I was absolutely fascinated by the Hens and Chicks when Granny told me the hens would have babies and they'd roll off of her and make new plants. And the Burro's Tail! I'd never seen anything like it! I thought it looked so cool, still do. I've been wanting to get another one for quite a while now but can't seem to find one. I may order one online. Jeff, thanks so, so, so much for bringing back such wonderful memories of 2 very special ladies in my life. It means so much to me. TFS :)
just wanted to say think you for the peace of mind about how delicate they are... just got my first one yesterday for such a good price and i was getting so concerned about the amount of leaves falling off! i was using a small tweezers to pick out the dead leaves sitting in the pot (because im psycho and I like them to be clean and tidy) and i lost sooooo many little guys in the process! glad to know this is kinda normal!
Wow my burro’s tail must be very patient, I had been pretty rough with prior to watching this video. Thank you for giving such specific information! I had been majorly under watering and after I soaked mine he plumped right up and looks so happy.

Very nice plant. Best advice on succulents. Do nothing if growing outdoors. Just pay attention to cold temp tolerance. I use cedar and wine bottle cork that is sufficient for Encyclias to grow my succulents. Pop the succulent out of that tiny pot it comes in and repot it with orchid media without disturbing the root ball. Oncidium type light is perfect. Simple.
I bought 3 in the past, they all die on me, either due to too dry or root rot. I just bought 3 again, hopefully it will survive this time. Once they are stable and grow more then I'll repot all of them together. :)
