I'm glad you two like it! My wife slowly got obsessed and is now watching the anime. She's only like 6 episodes in but is aware of a lot of things that happen way later

It's funny. From the comments of several reviewers, seems like modern audiences are uncomfortable with close ups. Some even feel it as an invasion of personal space. Anime is full of extreme close ups, to the point that they make close ups of a titillating light on a pupil, or a single tear. This style originated in part from the restrictions of the limited animation and the resolution that standard definition used to have; old TV sets were small. However, I believe that it is also and effective technique to convey more intimacy with the actors and their feelings. I think it is a must if you are translating anime. Those of us who lived the transition form SD to HD, and to 4K are not bothered at all. It is even refreshing.

even though I experienced the transition(SD-HD), I didn't really care much about it, or paid attention rather...
anyways, I never actually noticed it until I heard a reactor, or a OP tuber (I think Merphy Napier first iirc) mention it.... I personally look at it, now that I am aware, as a manga/anime reference and, more importantly, a distinct style for the show... and hopefully the keep using/doing it going forward

The sword bend should have been easy to fix in post. I think they missed it.

Nice overall review. I agree with most of your points. I just want to mention that the soundtrack was amazing as well. This was my first exposure to One Piece, though I have watched some anime as a kid and a teen. I found it to be very fun and refreshing so I read the first 100 chapters of the manga and they were also pretty fun. I don't want to spoil myself too much for the TV series so I will probably leave it at that for now.

Can we stop for a moment and aknowledge that Men's Health did an article about One Piece? Next we get a Playboy middle page of Nami, Robin or Boa and NYTimes will update us on World Government issues... oh, wait... never mind the last bit. 😅
