D'Angelo Barksdale is an under rated character on The Wire. He was brilliant and relatable.

Journal Wright he was born into the streets, and not just that, but into a drug-dealing empire. You can tell that he is reluctant to be a part of that world, but it's all that he knows. He's not a violent person, and isn't afraid to show that he has empathy. The scene where he and Bodie are about to get into about Wallace playing with a toy is a prime example of that. Hel, even when he finds out that Stringer has Wallace killed, he is tempted to snitch, but he knows that he just can't do it, that it would be against everything that has been ingrained in him. And he loses his life anyway. Almost every character has a tragic end to them, but his death seems so Shakespearean.
Bob Hollywood That's beautifully stated. What I loved most was the gems he was dropping on Bodie, Poot, and Wallace like teaching them how to play chess by comparing it to the drug game and then informing them they don't have to be rude to the fiends or be violent because it's just like any other lucrative enterprise and that catching bodies brings in the police not the drug trade itself.
10 years from now, The Wire will still matter.
I agree. It went on the air 16 years ago, it wrapped 10 years ago, and people are *still* talking about it like it's fresh and new.

Yeah it's sort of like another actor, Adrian Brody, who was in a motorcycle injury, broke his nose, and now the broken nose is like a trademark for him as an actor.
the guy who played chibs in sons of anarchy was given a glasgow smile walking home from DJing at a club. He was depressed and robert Carlyle told him hollywood would love it. hey presto.
It's definitely helped in Michael K Williams case, we were just watching The Night Of (another excellent thing with him in it) and we've seen a few shows now that had him in it, Boardwalk Empire, The Wire and then The Night Of and the person I was watching it with was like "Isn't it interesting how each of the characters he's played for HBO all have scars?" and I was like "uhhhh you realize the scar is real, right?"
Omar's testimony against Bird was the best courtroom scene in that series - absolutely nailed Levy to the cross - just about peed laughing at Levy lol

The fist time I saw The Wire, I was in shock when Omar died.
The second time, I hated it, even though I knew it was coming.
The third time I loved it, just showed how brutal the streets are, when a little corner kid can kill you like that! It may seem like sloppy writing and an ending unworthy of Omar, but I find it brilliant!

To all those actors who played their parts in the wire thanks it was a brilliant series and I mean brilliant.
Ian Dowd It's the rare show that had outstanding actors in damn near every role. From Lt. Daniels, Colvin, Carcetti, McNulty, Carver, Bunk, Herc, Greggs, Freamon to Prop Joe, Omar, Brother Mouzone, Slim, Stringer, Avon, D, Marlo, Chris, Bodie, Snoop, Bubbles, Michael, Kenard, Poot, Wallace every actor portrayed the hell out of their roles. The black characters were'nt just shallow stereotypes on screen. The writers allowed them to bring these characters to life. The Wire is and was a one of a kind show.

I've never been so devastated by the death of a character as I was when Omar was killed.

I used to feel sorry for him too, but he played a dangerous game and contributed to the cycle of violence in the city.
For me it’s his killer that I was I surprised about, only a kid could get that close and not cause him to be suspicious.
The show showed us from the beginning that only a kid could get close to Omar. The whole time we were watching to see if Chris/Snoop would catch him but we already knew he don’t get caught slipping unless it was a kid.

I watched The Wire because of COVID and looking for shows to binge. My God....what great writing, character development, story lines, relationships...JUST WOW. Easily in my top 3 of best shows I've ever watched.
We Marylanders still speak about the Wire like it’s still in production . It truly showed real Baltimore and all its components unfiltered. Love it. David Simon and the cast are magic!

It’s well known that actors will audition for whatever roles they’re auditioning for on a certain day, they don’t really intend to get the role but they’re hoping the casting director will offer them another role which is what happened here.

Bodie was the most underrated character
Yeah Bodie was one of my favourite characters.
I don't think hes underrated at all, most people I talk to put his death as the saddest, only rivaled by Wallace. Seeing him burnt out and disillusioned from the game, and his final stand where he pretty much accepts his fate is brutal. When Bodie killed Wallace I really hated him, but as the season went on you can see he never really gets over it. Just a pawn in the end :(

The Sopranos is slightly superior to the wire.
Sopranos is mere soap opera in comparison. The Wire's lasting effects (people studying demographic change and foundation) along with the most majority black cast in TV history (esp considering Hollywood/film history of oppression) and the importance of that make the two shows incomparable. The Wire stands alone.

I took a course in Undergrad on The Wire for a writing requirement. & My law school also had a Criminal procedure class based on The Wire . This show is legendary .

Best show ever created. And yes D’angelo was my favorite character as well. His death hurt. Bodie’s death made me cry because he was so relatable and he was just a product of his environment, but he really cared for the people around him.

It's not a TV show dude. That is why it can't be mentioned in the same bracket with other "entertainment" shows. It was shot naturally, portraying real life of a city as it goes on everyday. It's the great novel of our period.

Arguably the best written show ever. I felt the same way when season 2 came on. To the point I didn't watch for about 3-4 years. When you see it play out in its entirety, you can truly appreciate the genius that is created in that Big Picture kind of way
I felt the same way about Season 2 also but it gave incredible insight on how the dope got into Baltimore to begin with and who the people were at the docks helping to do it. The Wire left no stone unturned and it's the only show that Has over 10 main characters who's faces and screen names you know right of the top. Bunk will always be Bunk no matter what he does .. Omar, McNautly, Bunny, Marlo, whoever

Not really. He was a minor character only to play a part in bubbles character growth. He died offscreen and if it wasn't for bubbles mentioning him nobody on that show or even the community was going to be impacted by his death. If it was Dukie then you got something here

Honestly, I really appreciated the second season because it showed how it is from all different communities. I mean I'm black and grew up in the hood but the show itself is fire.

( I think I'll stick to European stuff .They make TV that's not so adolescent and write for the functionality literate.) ....Man ,I wish they made more wire .

The Wire was simply the best of the best. I mean, there were and are a lot of good shows. Greats ones. But The Wire was the best. The story lines and acting was second to none. And when you go back and watch it again you realize what a brilliant guy David Simon is. Little Man, Omar, Cheese, Cutty, Snoop, MIchael, Rawls, Bunny, Randy, Kima, Prop Joe, The Greek, etc. Names that are forever in my head.

Great social commentary that STILL resonates even today 12 years after the show's finale! Great writing, directing as well as some of the BEST actors. Didn't want to see it end but as with all good things.......
Lot of memorable deaths, but the part that hit me hardest was when Greggs was shot. The anxiety, the guilt, the intensity of the search for that car. One of the most tense moments every captured in any series.

I was introduced to the Wire here in the UK in 2012. I found it to be compulsive and at times heart wrenching viewing from start to finish. A great script, brilliant performances across the board and a spotlight put on those, many in authority would rather not see illuminated. No fake awards necessary as its message is far to serious for that. Like a fine wine it will resonate globally in the consciousness of those priveliged to watch it, then, now and in the future. A timeless classic.
If Top boy was ending, I think they should cast Snoop as Jaqs mother, period point blank!

I just finished watching Season 2 yesterday and let me tell you, Frank Sobatka was the muthafuckin man!! I usually skipped over the 2nd season because I thought it'd drag or be boring, but the 2nd season was AMAZING.

Yeah I hated season 2 my first two viewings. It gets so much better on repeat watches once you how it lays the ground work involving kickbacks to developers, the Greeks returning to B'more, etc. I think season 5 gets more shit than it deserves. People say it's too cartoony with the fake serial killer, but honestly a scandal like that wouldn't surprise me at all in 2020. Even when it aired, Simon said the journalist making up stories/facts in order to win awards and advance their career was something that actually happened when he was a reporter.
Omar was the best character, followed very closely by Bubbles, then McNulty.

It is now 2023 and I am watching The Wire for the first time. Rn I’m on S4E8 and this is easily one of if not the best tv shows I have seen
I rented it for two snowy workless weeks- watched it non stop- I was so depressed and bereaved after the last dvd. I’ll never forget my feeling of utter disbelief that there was no more Wire.

I always get emotional when I watch anything about The Wire. So many remarkable and extraordinary moments.
Ever since 2011 I have made a ritual to rewatch The Wire every year.
And everytime it blows my mind as if I'm seeing the greatest piece of entertainment first time every time.

It's amazing how realistic this show was. I use to tell people while I was in federal prison that this is like they just took a video camera a stood out there and filmed although we know they were all actor's. The drug portrayal of Baltimore was 💯💯💯 accurate. Pure genius David Simon the way he wove all 5 seasons together with it's characters. I thought it ended because of the bad light of real life was being shined on of Baltimore for the world to see. At least that was the rumor in Baltimore. Especially, when they focused on the politicians, we heard that made them uncomfortable because there again was actual truth and accuracy to it. After it ended some of it actually came true like the Mayor Shelia Dixon getting indicted and so forth.
It was mostly realistic, but some of it was theater and over the top.

I am an Old White Irish guy from NYC. Homicide: Life on the Street and The Wire , both by David Simon are the greatest shows ever on TV. They show the progression of the City of Baltimore. Both shows have the greatest characters of any show. I grew up poor 1 scene in Homicide when they are trying to get a kid to snitch and show him He's just gonna end up dead , They drive him to a lot by the water He says this is the ocean, they tell him it's the Bay the ocean's bigger. This kid was from West Baltimore and never saw the ocean he was about 17-18 yrs old That's powerful and True. In The Wire The Lt.Daniels takes Wallace to his Grandmother's house to hide him so He can testify on Stringer. They're walking up to the Grandmother's house and Wallace says What's that noise, the Lt. says Crickets. He never heard them before , powerful shit. I can relate to that it's real life. It's a big world out there but these poor kids never see it. Then so many people wonder how these poor kids get involved in criminal conduct and drugs. They should watch these shows that David Simon created from truth and being a Reporter on the streets of Baltimore. Good Job to the whole Cast.

Its not the best tv show ever!...... Its the best thing to ever been shot on camera & put on ANY screen. When ya watched a tacky soap opera with cheesy acting you have to get an episode of The Wire in afterwards to remind yourself that people can make good shows. Its by far the cleverest show created, by far.. theres really not many things come close. Breaking Bad ,Soprano's were amazing shows in their own right, but gave you more hollywood style action and a quicker drama "fix".. The Wire was just gritty, slow, long drawn out stories which added to the realism. It was real life at real life pace.
woolen Nailed it. The Wire is more than a show. It is a viewing experience. It is as real as it gets. David Simon really spent a year living in the streets of Baltimore in the 1980s. He showed the world the heart beat of that city. As real as a tv viewing experience can get.

you can’t just have 1 or 2 or even 3 favorite characters in the wire. there are too many phenomenal performances, characters, storylines, moments, just fuck. best show ever made hands down

Over the past couple of weeks, I watched every episode of every season...and finally finished last night. WOW! I was so sad & I hesitated watching the final episode knowing that it was the end of the series. Well done, Mr. Simon. Well done, to all of the actors & characters. Well done, to the writers. Well done, to Baltimore. SUPERB SERIES!!

I remember the end of Snoop (the young killer girl) when she realize in the car that her friend was asked to kill her, she comments on her new hairdo. That acceptance, that fatalism, just broke me. That is their sad life and they know that it's gonna end sooner than later.
It was the other way around, but he read the situation correctly and caught her off guard and she realized this. She was supposed to kill him, not the other way around.

Just finished the series yesterday (again) and I’ve noticed things I’ve didn’t notice before. I watch this show like 3 times now and it feels so damn fresh! And this story is still relevant.
The most underrated characters in my opinion is Poot and Bubbles. The only 2 characters from the very beginning of season 1 who made it to the end of season 5 (street wise)

The final nail in Stringer’s coffin was when he admitted to Avon he was responsible for D’Angelo getting killed, after that Avon didn’t care about Stringer.
The Wire is the most brilliant show I’ve ever watched. Stringer Bell & Bodie were my favorite street guys; and Lester & Jimmy were my favorite cops. The only shitty thing about this show is the fact it only had 5 seasons. I feel like it could have gone at least 7 or 8. It will always be my favorite show.

I just finished watching this show! I definitely had mixed feelings about Omar's exit. I thought it was a bit unworthy given how everyone was anticipating a showdown between him & Marlo, but I also get why it was a kid that did him. He had a soft spot for "the innocent".
Saddest death is still Wallace, for me. He really didn't deserve it.
Also, I had so much hope for Duke. He was smart, seemed to enjoying playing with the computer, and was a pretty good student in Prezbo's class. But somehow he ended up being the new Bubz in the end. So sad. Btw, I think Bubbles had the best character development hands down in the show. He was my fav character in the show.
