- There are many different types of scrolls found in decorative iron work. Several scroll styles use the name snub end scroll. Today we will look at a half penny or half penny snub end scroll.

The half penny snub end is a nice look. Not sure if I'd find many applications for it, but one day I will. I wonder if folks that buy hand forged items realize how much work / time / and how much of "self" (The Blacksmith) goes into the making of an item? I hope mass production hasn't polluted the masses. The UK's system of antiquated measure adds a story and more value to a piece. Though the consistency of the old coin varies … interesting. This brings back memories of using U.S. paper currency to fold, roll and measure t-shirts, and underwear while in Basic Training U.S Army. FYI: that's one aspect of service I dropped.

Morning John, the half penny measured 17.14 mm diameter and was discontinued in 1984, it was designed to replace the old sixpence ( 2.5 pence) so there u go mate, another fab video John thanks 👍🏴

Got to laugh at youngsters searching Google for things. 🤔
This came at just the right time, making or made an A frame stand for my Sisters big shield thing she has, and she wants some scrolls on the bottom of it, started today on the scroll but it just wouldn't go right, I think I had it too tight. So I walked away and am going to start a fresh tomorrow morning.
Wonderful way to tip a scroll out. This was very enlightening. Thank you!
We had Pound Shillings And Pence here in Australia until 1966 when they went over to Dollars and cents.

Thanks for the video. The way I learned this last year was nearly identical except the presenter forged the teardrop bent in one direction and then forged it back the opposite way as they rounded it. The effect was to create a clear line between the penny and the parent stock all the way to the junction. You managed to get a pretty crisp line in between with out doing that!

An old half-penny (½d) was about an inch across. After decimalisation the half New Penny coin (½p) was about 11/16".

Before you rounded that last corner, I saw a Swan/Goose head or an easy leaf. During the rounding process, it became the head to the Sinclair Oil Company Dinosaur... from half-penny set up to multiple stylized scroll ends.
Interesting observations. I was thinking it might become an Aspen leaf

I made some cool snake railings out of ,1" round stock and flat
It was fun building the first side , the other side was very hard to match it's pair perfect
I ended up tracing the first one on a big fab table and then I welded points around the table to make sure the railing would fit into it when I got to the right curvature I don't claim to be a pro
Just came across an opportunity and decided to say ok

Victorian Half Pence are a fat inch in diameter, but the size of the coin varied from period to period. It depends on age. I'd assume the term ha'penny scroll is a Victorian term so an inch -ish or 25mm

I've got some old coins and there seems to be a couple of sizes of halfpennies and they seem to go by age - the older ones are bigger. My oldest one is about 30mm and my youngest is about 17mm.

I was given a half penny, or sometimes pronounced ha’penny, and the legend is if you keep a given half penny in your pocket, it brings luck. A friend gave me mine after I graduated from veterinary school.
Our legend is keep at least one of the smaller coins in your pocket, lest the dogs will relieve themselves on you.
Handy in your line of work.
How do you keep from getting cold shuts in the half penny scroll at the joint
Avoid a sharp transition and keep an eye out for problems. Sometimes a few passes with a file is all it takes to deal with an issue
I can't seem to find anyone who has a video online that is forging and putting together a large wrought/ ornamental panel to put between two posts or a posts and wall as i would be greatly interested in learning the process of how to do this acrutily the panel would need to be about 7ft by 7ft its been really hard to find any sort of demonstration on this would i maybe need to get some books on the subject and could you please recommend some reference material on doing this type of work thank you for any information that you can provide

I'm a cold shut magnet. This would be a tough one.
They are prone to that
Some times if you are carefull you can forge weld the cold shut together it helps to take an extra heat to carefulay clean up the shoulder and and to use a clean radius on the anvil if you use a sharp edg the shoulder can forme a cold shut at least that is how I was tought pls correct me if im wrong

My way of thinking...a cold shut on the "half penny" is not structural, so I doubt it would be a big issue anyway if it's not a big honking crack.
I could not focus on your forging as I was too busy watching your anvil spider.
