    The Chapman ML2 Modern is a great mid-level budget guitar. Clocking in at just under $500 US (as of October 2019) it’s a very versatile a high quality instrument for its price. Its coil splits and 25” scale make the guitar very versatile for blues, rock, country, hard rock, and even metal if you’re into that. The Les Paul shaped body is much thinner, making it fairly light. Its neck has 24 frets, satin finish, rounded fretboard with volute, and its neck joint allows very easy access to the upper frets. A very comfortable guitar. Recommended!

    Mark - Thanks for posting this review. I am looking at a Gretsch for the same price. Then that lead me to an Epiphone Les Paul Pro III. Then that lead me to...anyway, Chapman is new to me, but I see some other reviews of the same model that have favorable reviews. Now, I have one more reason to be confused. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. They have weight.

      Hi Phil. Those are good guitars to too. I like the Epiphone 339 type guitars; 339 Pro and Casino Coupe in particular. It's good to try a number of them. I was actually quite surprised with this ML2. The neck and body are quite good, and I thought the pickups sound decent. Very versatile too.

The pickups will probably be replaced at some point. The 24 frets are great too. Still gets a thumbs up from me!

    Wow Mark!!! What a steal for $350, even $500 is cool... I also like the sound of the weight, and the contours of the body... I have a Gibson LP Studio, that I really like... I have asked several other UA-cam guitarists that are reviewing LP's about the knobs that you can pull up... They are usually reviewing their prized vintage LP's, and could not answer my interest, as they say the older LP's don't have this feature of the pull out knobs.. Maybe in a future lesson, you could give us a short discussion as to what the use of this is... You said something about coil splitting, and I could tell the difference in tone as you did it... It is still all Greek to me.. Thanks so much for the video... Take care Brother....

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  4 роки тому +1

      Sounds good Bruce. Coil splitting (usually accessed from a push/pull knob) is essentially turning a humbucker pickup into a single coil pickup by disabling one of the coils. So it thins out the sound. Some guitars do this well, some don't. This one does it pretty well IMHO.
      This is a very nice guitar for $500. Another great one for more or less the same price is the PRS SE 24 Standard (or the PRS SE 22 Standard ... 22 frets vs 24). Many of the same features as in the Chapman ML2.

    Un comparisson to ltd ec1000 which you recomend?

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  4 роки тому +1

      I've never played the ESP LTD 1000, but it's $500 more (or so, depending on where you buy it) than this guitar. So I'd hope it's better. The ESP LTD-256 is about the same price. I've heard it's good, but I don't know.
      This one is very good. Very comfortable and light, decent pickups (not great, but ok), and fantastic neck and playability. I put a high emphasis on the neck and comfort of the guitar, because if it doesn't have that I don't even play it - it won't matter how it sounds. I can always put in new pickups ... and usually, with almost any guitar, I can find pickups I'd rather have in there. That's true of even my highest priced guitars.
      So I have no problem recommending the Chapman ML-2, but I don't know how the ESP LTD-256 or 1000 compare. Hope that helps!

      None of the U$500 guitars are really going to stay around for good. As long as I travel and play in disreputable places I need a couple of "beaters". But yeah, these aren't really meant for keeps. Gotta say though, this one is pretty interesting and fun and very comfortable to play.

    I've tested a few of the Chapman range and don't see what all the fuss is about. Every single one I've picked up and plugged in has felt cheap. The pickups are your usual mass produced stuff, quite possibly Chinese made. No real balance between bridge and neck, the latter is muddy and dull hence why I'd guess they're Chinese production as it follows the trend of what comes out of that market. I wouldn't put these above £200 at retail. I've played more squier and epiphones which superseed the chapmans

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  4 роки тому +5

      Odd. I felt quite the opposite. The construction of the one I reviewed is on par with the PRS SE line of guitars. Much better features and craftsmanship that any Epiphone near that price. Plays much better, lighter. Much better neck. Feels cheap? Yeah, the feel of the guitar is better than the $1000 Gibsons and any Epiphone LP I've picked up, but not as good as the $4000 Gibsons. If that's cheap, well okay, it's cheap.
      The pickups aren't Seymour Duncans, but ... we'll, you heard them. Not at all muddy. Quite bright actually; especially compared to stock Epiphone or Gibson. I wish manufacturers would charge $200 more and drop Seymour Duncans or Lollars or Fralins or MojoTones into their guitars. It rarely happens except with boutique guitars.
      Can't say anything about the Strat and Tele style Chapmans, so I won't compare to Squiers, which are, IMHO, quite decent for the money.
      I bought this with my own money. If I thought it was shit I'd say it.

    • @vintageandmoderneffects
      @vintageandmoderneffects 4 роки тому

      @@MarkZabel I'd have to disagree. For a guitar that retails around the 500 mark the quality just doesn't reflect its price. Fair play, you got it at 350 but even then I'd say that was over priced for what it is. You could buy a second hand zakk wylde epiphones LP for less and that is a much higher quality playing and sounding guitar. I think the Chapman sit in a huge part of the guitar market but unfortunately don't match what's already out there or has the reputation. I'm not a lover of jacksons either but I could easily put a handful of models forward both new and second hand that would surpass the quality and playability of any Chapman model

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  4 роки тому +1

      @@vintageandmoderneffects We just must like different guitars. I wouldn't want a Zakk Wylde Epi for any price ... for various reasons. Same with inexpensive Jacksons.
      Either I got really lucky, you've gotten really unlucky, or we just have very different ideas about what makes a guitar playable and sound good. It's most likely the latter. Thanks for your opinion.

    • @brandonthompson8640
      @brandonthompson8640 4 роки тому +1

      You definitely have a V2, and Chapman upgraded the pickups pretty heavily from the first version to the second, and they moved factories so QC is much improved, from what i hear.

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  4 роки тому

      It's pretty nice IMHO. I may eventually put in different pick-ups, but they sound decent to me.
