Join me as I meander along Caine Road in Mid-Levels, Hong Kong S.A.R., in the first in a new series, taking a look at some 'before and after' photographs of the area.
In today's episode, I begin at the eastern end of Caine Road at the Zoological Gardens. Here is a list of Buildings I visit or find out about along the way:
    -Catholic Cathedral
    -Old Italian Convent
    -Victoria Gaol
    -Douglas Villas
    -Jamia Mosque
-Ho Kom-tongHall (Sun Yat Sen Museum)
    -Albron Court (Formerly Buxey Lodge)
    -Police Married Inspectors Quarters
    -Hop Yat Church
-Old Police stations No 8 and 9
-Side streets I delve into ...Ladder St, Shing Wong St, Old Bailey St, Aberdeen St, Rednaxela Terrace, Princes Terrace, Staunton St, Mid-Levels escalator, Shelley St, Caine Lane, Castle Lane and Glenealy.
I use a range of photo sources such as old HK Facebook groups and various websites.
Gwulo.com is a tremendous source of information to find out about Hong Kong's past. David Bellis has done a phenomenal job of bringing people interested in HK history to a central place where they can pose questions and submit photos. Do check it out. gwulo.com/
This year I have bought many books which I have found to be invaluable. These include:
Dictionary of Hong Kong Biography edited by May Holdsworth and Christopher Munn.
Crime, Justice and Punishment in Colonial Hong Kong, again by May Holdsworth and Christopher Munn.
Anglo-China Chinese People and British Rule in Hong Kong, 1841 - 1880 by Christopher Munn
A History of Hong Kong by Frank Welsh

    1. Loved the sounds of the zoo and the clicking walk signals. Really made me miss the old days.
    2. The evolution of your daughter’s enthusiasm for the video was hilarious to watch 😂😂
Great job. I look forward to more in this series. Happy Valley should be a good one. Forbidden City too.

Thanks for creating this series, I enjoyed the photographic comparisons and the history lessons. We visited HK recently and can confirm that Matthew is still at Hooked. We look forward to seeing the other areas in the series. Best wishes from the Wyre Forest area.😉

Just learned that two of the earliest sets of traffic lights in Hong Kong were installed at either end of Caine Road in 1922.

I used to live in Pok Fu Lam as a Fellow in HKU. I never knew the fascinating history of many places in HK. Thank you for what you do, and I look forward to your other videos! I hope to be able to buy you a pint under a ubiquitous Banyan tree when I visit HK next! Cheers!

A lot of WWII history at Cameron Mansions too. A Japanese war memorial once stood. They are clearing the building there now for some ultra luxury apartments.
