This week I'm giving you a sneak peek into my collage process. I create painterly, impressionistic, figurative collages with gel prints. I treat each torn tidbit of paper like a brush mark, I'm painting with paper! All of my collage papers are hand painted with Golden Fluid Acrylic paints and the majority of them a created through layering with stencils on my gel plate. The techniques used in this Tutorial Tidbit are in-depth lessons in my Patreon page. My Patreon features robust step-by-step videos on every step of my collage process from concept to completion.
Consider joining me for one month on Patreon, give it a test drive! In June, 2022 I will be posting the Tuscany Video Diaries daily in Patreon direct from my three weeks spent in Italy. The Video Diaries will cover my painting with friends in Cortona, traveling to teach in Città della Pieve, and staying in my own flat with a beautiful terrace painting watercolors for the last week.

Love love love! I have a little chickadee perch on my door knob when I have the door open.
So sweet!!
The eye, my Goddess! I love how you can see the world in bits and pieces!
And my vision is NOT GOOD! but many years of practice have helped me to be able to do that. thank you so much. I do see the world in terms of simple shapes, which translates to collage!
Amazing, I’m so inspired. I just got my Gelli plate and have been making backgrounds using your stencils and masks. This is addicting..😂
It is addicting, and fun!! I’m glad you found me here
this was wonderful to watch Elizabeth. Thank you.
My pleasure!
I was about to start the collage process but was totally off base on how to do it. This video was super helpful and very well done. I learned so much. Thank you.
Oh I’m so glad! I hope you create beautiful art Sandy
Thank you for sharing your thought process in this fun, informative tutorial! It was so helpful.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! I try to keep the videos around 20 minutes for UA-cam. But when I put them in my Patreon page I split them into multi part and go through the entire process step-by-step!
Love the fluffy touches!
Thank you Aimée
OMG! Elizabeth, that’s stunning x
Thank you so much Marcia
Elizabeth, you are a Genius 🤩 😍
Oh my goodness thank you so much Theresa
This was fascinating to watch! Loved it!

I could watch you do this for hours. Fascinating how the image evolves. Thank you for sharing your art and process!
My pleasure! I do these real time as multi part lessons in my Patreon
Love love love it. For those of us who like all things fiddly, this is like crack 😂 Thank you 🙏
Crack indeed!! I feel the same :-)
The tutorial is awesome thank you Elizabeth
My pleasure Carole!
Love to see you collage, learning a lot from it and the result is stunning, the master at work🤩
Thank you so much Ingrid, it is what I love doing the most!
Prettiest bird ever!!! Love your process. Tfs. ♡
My pleasure, thanks Diane!
LOVE, LOVE!!!! From the first time I saw your work in Asheville, I have been a fan!!! So inspirational and has just sparked my heart with creativity!! I have started using collage techniques in a more fine art painterly way as well and people are shocked when they get closer and see that it is collage and not brush strokes!! I have the most interesting discussions around my collage pieces. The more I do, the more I start thinking I may give up on other mediums and just focus on collage....we'll see!! Thank you for just being you!!!
My pleasure Teddy! Asheville was a long time ago, seems like a lifetime. I’m glad you are enjoying the process!
Wow the amount of detail you can get and it such a fun medium. Thank you for sharing so many little tips .
My pleasure! Yes, it can be pretty detailed!
Elizabeth, I am so excited to meet you. I am coming from Kansas City MO to your White Bear class in a couple of weeks. I love this process. It satisfies something within me to work with little bits. It reminds me a little of working jigsaw puzzles. I grew up doing that with my mom. Again very excited to learn more. The texture and dimensions created are beyond paints ability. See you soon!
See you soon! It’s going to be so much fun Stacey! You’ll have your share of little bits!!
Excellent! Thank you!
My pleasure!
Lovely, as usual. Thank you 😘
Thanks Regina!
Amazing!
Thanks so much, I appreciate it Mary Ellen
So beautiful!
Thank you Heather
Your collage process is amazing! I love your creations. I've learned so much about gel pres printing from your videos. Thank you!
thank you Margaret, and I'm glad you have learned so much!
Wow! That was amazing! I have a whole new respect for all those gel prints you encourage me to make. So glad I found your channel.
I’m glad you did too! Yes, this is what I paint papers for. :)
Hope you are feeling better soon!
Thank you very much, I should be OK by tomorrow :-) I was sorry to miss this but it was so early, and I really wasn’t up to it
Wonderful!
Thanks so much Beverly!
Awesome!
Thank you for a great video!
My pleasure!
Lovely work. You patience is admirable. Thanks for all the tips.
Thank you! I find it therapeutic. My pleasure
I'm totally blown away by the incredibly tiny pieces of paper you use in this collage. I've read that each piece of paper is a brush stroke. Do you use larger pieces of paper in larger designs, like portraits and landscapes? Or do all subjects require such tiny pieces?
I seriously want to get beyond just making the patterned gel prints, but I can't decide between a Patreon membership and a live workshop (maybe Wisconsin?) which would also be a vacation. 😮
I use very small pieces for all subjects. The brush marks are the same variety of sizes regardless of subject. In-person workshop, if you can do it, offers great feedback from me in the moment and hands on. Patreon is continual tutorials every week that you can always watch again.
Love it! Part of me wants to do this and another part doesn't want to deal with the fiddlyness of it. I'll definitely try some collage like this though; I definitely have gel prints I can use. I'm glad I finally found this video. I actually looked in about a month or so ago for this type of collage for a collab I was preparing for. I didn't find it then, but I'm thankful I found it now. Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure. I give workshops in person and online if you are interested. :) PaperPaintings.com
Inspiring! I am going to have a go. I have some beautiful gel prints to use. I am going to start with a flower. X
Great!
Thank you so very much for showing us how you work on a chickadee. It’s our state bird and I’ve been wanting to do one. I appreciate you so much, Elizabeth.
It’s my state bird as well! I’m from Massachusetts, born and raised
@@ElizabethStHilaire at least now, you don’t have to deal with the winters In Massachusetts, yet you still get to have the chickadee with you. Thanks again for all share and teach us.
@@cheryl7476 so true! SOMETIMES I go home for the holidays and it’s BRUTAL!

Hello Marie! Thank you so much. I hope you and Noel are well
I just had to let you know that I have a LOT of your stencils. And somehow I missed the peacock doodle stencil. I saw you use it recently and had to have it. It arrived a few days ago and I am in love with it. I've been gelli printing nonstop. :)
Oh my goodness thank you Lori! It’s a favorite of mine too. I’m so glad you are enjoying it, that means a lot to me.
I love watching you…I Learn something, each time.
How long have you been doing this?
20 years? Maybe. I’ve lost track. LOL I have a degree in art.
This is really fantastic! Glad I found you on UA-cam! ❤️

Another fascinating tutorial. Thank you!
Thank you very much, I appreciate it!
Love the class . Thank you
Beautiful, I adore your work 😍
Thank you so very much
Emulating Frida. So lovely!!
Do you leave the gloss gel jar open and dip your brush in? If so how do you keep it from drying out?
💕🐝
Yes, I leave the jar open, it does not dry out. :-)
Wow I love this. You must have the patience of a saint! I'm just wondering though if you use the sturdier rice paper that you use in your printing videos? You don't seem to mention it here, and in the printing videos talk about it not tearing......
It doesn’t tear or stick on the gel plate! Yes this is that paper plus other papers. I love that rice paper for collage especially, it tears easily for collage.
Great tutorial Elizabeth. Could I ask why you prefer the gloss gel medium to the matte?
Matte products have matting agents suspended in them that make them dull back the intensity of your colors. Only gloss is completely optically clear.
I’ve been enjoying the gel print process and am just starting to do some paper collage. I have the glue, but I’ve found that the brushes I currently have aren’t suitable, so I intend to order the kind you’re using here from your link. Couple of questions: Do you use anything other than water to clean the gel medium off of them (during soaking or afterward)? Does the gel medium come out completely? Thanks SO much for keeping us inspired! I have learned a ton, and I hope to be able to attend one of your in-person workshops one of these days.
I clean all my brushes with the masters brush cleaner what you can find on my Amazon shop! It’s the best
@@ElizabethStHilaire Thanks so much! I’ll take a look for it.
That white paper looks like mulberry paper.
Mulberry paper is sort of a generic term. I did find a link for the paper, it is in the description box below the video! Thank you Deb
Hi Elizabeth, you mentioned once that you don’t tend to use deli paper in your work. On the white part in the chest area it looked like you were using a painted transparent paper. Was that tissue paper? Do you have it on your supply list? I bought your first book & did my sunflower. I’m finding my chickadee challenging because he is so much smaller.
I don’t use that much deli paper in my work because it tends to want to wrinkle. But I do like the translucency of it. I don’t use tissue paper in my work, because it’s too hard to paint. Therefore we’ve narrowed it down to probably a thinner, lighter weight rice paper. That would be the roll that is on my Amazon shopping list that is 18 inches tall. It is not sized on either side so it can stick to the gel plate but it is thin, and more translucent! Suji-Gami
Thank you so much!🙏💝
Amazing!
