[HLG HDR] Hiking in Santo Antao, Cape Verde - Cruzinha to Ponta do Sol

Cesaria Evora’nın memleketi olan Cabo Verde - Türkçe adı ile Yeşil Burun Cumhuriyeti - Atlas Okyanusu’nda Senegal ve Moritanya açıklarında bulunuyor. Eski bir Portekiz sömürgesi olan bu ülkeye yaptığımız seyahat sadece 2023’ün değil hayatımızın en sıradışı seyahatlerinden biriydi. Bu kısa filmde Cabo Verde adalarından biri olan Santo Antão adasının güneyini ziyaret ediyoruz. Cruzinha köyünden Ponta do Sol’e yürüyoruz. Dağlar arasındaki vadilerde kurulmuş köylerin her birinde 3-4 aile yaşıyor. Öğrendiğimiz birkaç kelimelik Kreol ile onları tanımaya çalıştık. Kapısı, penceresi bile olmayan evlerden yükselen neşe dolu Cabo Verde müziklerini (Morna) dinledik. Yaklaşık 16km ve 6 saat süren ve oldukça tırmanışlı olan bu rotada yer yer zorlansak da müthiş keyif aldık. Dünyanın en izole noktaları olsa gerek. Herhangi bir araç ile ulaşımı olmayan bu köylere gıda ve malzeme taşımak için videoda göreceğiniz bu patikalardan geçilmesi gerekiyor. Bizim için adrenalin dolu bu iniş ve tırmanışlar onların rutini ve angaryası. Yamaçlarında teras tarımı yaygın. Muz, papaya, tatlı patates ve özellikle grogue olarak bilinen yerel bir rom türü üretimi için kullanılan şeker kamışı gibi çeşitli ürünler yetiştiriyorlar. 1456’da Portekizliler bu adaları keşfettiğinde henüz üzerinde insan ve yerleşim yokmuş. Afrika’ya yakın olması nedeniyle zamanla köle ticareti merkezi haline gelmiş. Bugünkü halkının kökleri köle olarak adaya getirilen Afrikalılara ve Portekizli yerleşimcilere dayanıyor. İyi seyirler.

Cabo Verde, the homeland of Cesaria Evora is located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coasts of Senegal and Mauritania. Our journey to this former Portuguese colony was not only one of the most extraordinary trips of 2023 but of our lives. In this short film, we visit the southern part of Santo Antão, one of the islands of Cabo Verde. We walk from the village of Cruzinha to Ponta do Sol. Each village nestled in the valleys among the mountains is home to just 3-4 families. We attempted to get to know them using the few Creole words we learned. We listened to the joyful Cape Verdean music (Morna) emanating from houses without doors or windows. This route, approximately 16km and 6 hours long with plenty of climbing, was challenging but immensely enjoyable. It must be one of the most isolated places in the world. There is no vehicle access to these villages; food and supplies must be carried through the trails you'll see in the video. What is an adrenaline-filled journey for us is routine and drudgery for the locals. Terrace farming is common on the slopes, where various crops like bananas, papayas, sweet potatoes, and particularly sugar cane for the production of the local rum known as grogue, are cultivated. When the Portuguese discovered these islands in 1456, there were neither people nor settlements. Due to its proximity to Africa, it eventually became a center for the slave trade. The roots of the present population trace back to Africans brought to the island as slaves and Portuguese settlers. Enjoy the film.
