I bought this album in 1971. I still have it and it was one of my favorites that summer along with Crosby's "If I Could Only Remember My Name" and then next year, JJ Cale. Zepplin, Spirit, Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, McCoy Tyner, the list was long and an 18-19-year-old on his own out in the world, I was dazzled by the poetry and music that flowed out of my deck. The early 70's was the golden age of folk, blues, rock and jazz, Townes seemed like a haunted cowboy balladeer with a jazzy blues and sad undercurrent kind of like Gillian Welch now, that matched the madness and pain in his own life. Cowboys loved him, hippies loved him. TVZ has remained a favorite; a singer-songwriter I always wished I could have seen in person.

This is a masterpiece album and Townes' best. but honestly, the magic of Townes Van Zandt is when he's playing acoustic. Just him and his guitar.
