- At OCB, the new commander arrives, Lieutenant Martin Castillo! It seems like his no-nonsense style will contrast with the laid-back atmosphere in the Vice division.
From Miami Vice Season 1 Episode 6 'One Eyed Jack': Crockett attempts to help an old flame-free herself from a racketeer, then is framed for taking bribes. Martin Castillo becomes the squad's new lieutenant.

Who is the coolest man ever?
Castillo and Sonny!!! I love Miami Vice ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Don’t *ever* come up in my face again detective.
The true def of not liking each other but have to work together.

Typewriters, cigarettes inside the office, no cell phones lol Blast from the past.
If you did not LIVE it , you have no idea what you missed ... Face to face interaction was everything .. Smoking at your Desk ,, standard procedure .. It was a very good time
@@jefffromjersey52 It was my childhood, so kinda of lived it. My dad had one of those manual typewriters, when we got an electric one around 1986 or so, I thought that thing was so cool, but then we got an IBM with a dot matrix comptuer 6 months later and that was the coolest thing. But my real adult life, at least my pro working adult life that was post 2000, when the 80s were retro. But still, I miss face to face interactions.

Just a few of the good 80's shows.
I love miami vice. But knight rider just might be one of the best series of all time.
His whistle was so powerful he made the phones stop ringing!
Eddie Olmos changed the tone really fast. He brought a cultural awareness and a gravitas with him. No wonder he got nominated for two Emmys and won one for this series. Such a brilliant actor across the board.
I love that everyone has the warm flamboyant colors, Castillo has the strictly professional suit and tie.
He was always in black and white...rarely wore different colors, a few episodes toward season 4 and 5
Well they did have to go undercover a lot. Castillo not as much. So they always had to look like they fit in with a regular crowd...
Ridiculous show watching it again...so stupid
Great show, lasted 5 season's over 100 episodes. Set a bench mark for what a cop show should be.
@@jerryvelasco1474 I laugh at it now...all style no substance

Quite honestly my favorite character on the show was Castillo. He had a coolness about him. Spoke softly and carried a huge stick. Made me big time fan of Edward James Olmos. At the same time that I praise Olmos, I have to acknowledge the passing of his predecessor on the show Gregory Sierra. He played the first boss over Crockett and Tubbs in the early episodes and was killed off the show in the first season. Recently Mr. Sierra, who is best known for his role as Julio Fuentes on Sanford and Son, lost his battle with stomach and liver cancer. RIP Gregory Sierra.
I loved the cop duo and still you're right - a man that talks too much looses in these situations all the time - I was raised on Rockford & streets of San Francisco- this was the same level.
I always saw him as a more matured version of Detective Sergeant Chano Amengual from Barney Miller. In my head canon, Det. Sgt. Anmengual had retired from NYPD to go head up the vice division down in Miami, because the winters were mild.
I agree.
@@mattguest6326 Gregory Sierra was good on both shows.
Castillo is my favorite character. He talk brief, show little emotion, but he handles the bureaucracy so his people could focus on their work, the kind of boss you want.
Edward James Olmos is one of the most underrated actors of all time. He makes us Latinos proud 🇲🇽
He's not underrated.
"Charles Bronson by way of Havana". Yep.
best comment of the millennium
Would never hear a line like that on network TV now days. This show is iconic, 80's!
Great line!
Cuban Bronson is best Bronson.
Better than the Charles Bronson look alike knock off.
When Castillo walks in, Chuck Norris snaps to attention.......

This is real writing and acting. Just a real stoic man of few words, yet everything that was needed was said and done in just a few seconds. Now compare that to a character like Kylo Ren, such a joke. Put Ren and Castillo in a room and Castillo would Force Stare him into oblivion.
How does 35 years slip by so fast?

@@toddvanwinkle7777 Yep. Olmos mentions that he ad-libbed the line because he wanted to set some boundaries for the other actors, while still in character. Something he had a history of doing in other projects. Which is one of the reasons Olmos is so interesting to watch.
Apparently, it unhinged PMT and Johnson a bit. Still, it made for some great dynamics in the show.

0:48 Sonny walks into the office with a freshly lit cigarette dangling from his mouth - Pure 80's magic.
Not to mention the typewriters :)
Lt Castillo is one of the reaaon why Miami Vice is a hit series in the 80s
My favorite character by far. There was an ep where a drug kingpin gave Castillo info on a rival. When Castillo didn’t lavish thanks on him, the kingpin whined about how he was doing Castillo a solid and didn’t even say thanks. Castillo says “I’m just doing what you’re afraid to do. And one day I’ll bury you too.” Eastwood in his prime delivery of the line.
Miami Vice, Literally a series that was ahead of it's time. What an era. The nostalgia is real man. Been re-watching the entire series these past months, and what a time. Don't think any show can come close too it these days. Sad that the era, is long past. Iconic storyline, themes, instrumentals, characters and so much more. Legendary. What makes me appreciate the show even more is that they used some of Collin's music, truly iconic. What a scene, one of my favorite, and one I'll never forget. Castillo is massively underrated, and so happy that casted him to play, because he nailed that role.
When you command that kind of respect that you don't need to yell, or scream, or grab anyone by the shirt, or even say a word, just give a look, thats when you're a real badass
that's exactly why Castillo was the coolest guy in MV.
That Glare from Edward James Olmos as Martin Castillo was off the scale acting here ,Total Legend 😮
Notice how he looked everyone in the eye as walked through that room? Now that's how you command respect!
Lt Martin Castillo: Man of mystery and a TOTAL bad ass!
So say we all!
And drinks dos equis as water
Edward Olmos refused to do the show unless he had complete creative control over his character. They kept offering more and more money and he kept turning it down because it didn’t come with creative control. Finally they relented. True story.
they had a bunch of shit on his desk like knicknacks and bs. he swept it all in the trash and said i have creative control lol. also a true story
Principles over money. I like that.
He also directed more than 10 episodes thru season 2 and 3....
@@ADAPTATION7 Principles! don't pay the bills.
Very true
From what I understand, the tension between those two was real. It End it actually made the dynamic between their characters much better. And as the relationship between the two improve, the dynamic that they created in the beginning was what they chose to carry for the most part through the series.
Absolutely true; this was when Don Johnson thought he ruled the roost and could dictate what the new person acting as the new boss should be. EJ-O was having none of it!
BOSS CASTILLO was the polar ice cap opposite of every single 70's, 80's TV and movie police chief captain including the one he replaced on MIAMI VICE
Yep, less is more . . . more badass that is.
There will never be another.
Perfectly put. You’ve probably seen clips of how he shaped the character (like how he had the props people empty out of office). Pretty impressive stuff.

Back in the day when your boss had your back and didn't try to put a knife in it.
He really took this show to a whole new level amazing man
I remember being completely wrong about him. Yes he was all business, but would also back his squad up if they all came out of the wrong side of hell covered in blood. LOYALITY. HONOR. TRUST. That's what I remember most about Castillo.

Arrival of a legend. A man called Castillo 😎
“What do you hear Crockett?”
“Nothing but the rain”
“Then grab your gun and bring in the cat”

This show was one of the few things my family and I had to look foward to. Every Friday we knew we at least had that. The 1980's were simultaneously a miserable time period and the most hopeful "we still have the future" reserve of energy that is not now and hasn't been for 32+ years. I still don't know how it was like that. It really was though.
It was a time period that I despised every minute of. It is the same time period that for many years at this point in 2023 I would do anything to go back to and say that with as God as my witness with 100% honesty and truthfulness.
This show casting is totally on point.
Dude was too cool. No hurry to talk, no hurry to rush at anything but quick to tell you to get out of his face!! Lol
One of the great cop shows. All great actors from the good, to the bad, and the ugly. BRAVO!!
I was almost expecting him to say “So say we all!” 😀
Wait a second? That's Commander Adama? I never noticed!
Say what you want but castillo was awesome. He was the same with everyone. And straight to the point.
I wasn't expecting any other kind of entrance from Castillo.
It’s too bad she won’t live, then again... who does?
All this has happened before, but does it all need to happen again?
"I guess you're through huh?"
You’ve done a mans job sir !
The Castillo stare in full force. Sonny got his first dose. I like Gregory Sierra as Rodriguez, but Eddie Olmos changed the whole feel of the vice squad.
I was already a devout fan of this show from jump as a kid. It was the only time my Dad would let me watch a show that wasn't completely for kids. He loved Miami Vice and I did and still do. I was 9-15 when this show aired. It defined my childhood when it came to how I wanted TV/Movies to be. When Edward James Olmos joined the show, it was like Yoda joining Star Wars. He gave it eternal life and a depth that sustained it. I LOVED this show then and still do now. Even with some of the dated/corny scenes, it still holds up.
The look that Castillo gives Crockett at 1:39, Sonny knew he wasn't playing...
It’d be cool to see a Miami Vice prequel focusing on Castillo. I’d like to know how things happened to him as he moved up the ranks of the police force to end up the cold, collected, calculating and intense character he ended up as when heading the Metro Dade.
@SPeacock that’d be a good choice.
Maybehe did not have to become that, it might have been who he was . . . .
Prior to his daily training, Chuck Norris watches this video so he doesn't forget how to whistle.
I wish they would do a prelude of Castillo, his storylines were deep!
He always had an air of mystery.
Martin Castillo, soft spoken and to the point. My kind of man.
I forgot how much I liked this show back in the day.

Castillo, that look, no words necessary lol
Castillo is most definitely THE Man !
This little scene shows what dominance means

The only guy to wear pink in the 80s and not be called gay cause he was the coolest cop on tv.. I miss that show.. But if anyone did a remake, there's no way I'd be watching it.. Only the original for me
You can wear pink. And you can wear pink with a shoulder holster.
I once saw the late great Sean Connery wear pink in a Bond film. It was shocking to me, considering pink for guys didn't become popular where I live until around 2003/'04.
I agree..... When the movie came out, l stayed home...You had to have Don and Phillip ! ! ! !
I wear pink and I'm not gay. It's my favourite shirt color. And the only reason I do it is because I think it's hilarious it's getting such strong reactions. Don Johnson wear pink in Miami and he doesn't look gay and neither do anyone else except for the flamboyantly gay because they actually do look gay whatever color they're wearing.
@@ingvarhallstrom2306 Don wore more Salmon colours...loll j/k

That's just Edward playing himself on any day of the week.
Well, he does exude "ex-CIA ninja with samurai honor;" even before we knew who he was. Perfect entrance, even without the origami animals . . .
Oh,and thank you! The coolest scene in a film is that gentleman on a walking stick in the rain. The coolest scene in a TV show is that man with a samurai sword following the laws of bushido.
Love it. The Lieutenant was an instant hit by being so entirely different from what we expect in a show like this. And watching this now, you can see how the reaction of the characters builds this mystique, by being in equal measure bewildered and attracted.

I haven't seen a whole episode of Miami Vice in decades, but I like that these clips are as cool as I remember!
Lieutenant Castillo arrived....
In that very moment Miami Vice became the best tv show of all time.
I grew up in the 1980s and remember this show well, and looking back MV was a pretty shallow show. Not as shallow as today's reality shows but it nevertheless was. However, I can also understand how it was such a hit back then. Coming off an era of The Rockford Files, Kojak and Hill Street Blues, it was unique, fresh, colorful and modern (and very timely considering what Miami was back then), and therefore couldn't be denied.
Could you imagine if it had continued with the first police chief? No thanks.
Edward James Olmos is an amazing actor
Took the show up to another level.
I loooooved Castillo so much (and actor Edward James Olmos)
The character just became more enigmatic as the show progressed. I miss TV/movies via 1960 to 1999.
I love Castillo and his authority with silence
back then Castillo and Tubbs was my boys. I still love Castillo. Castillo was like " Do Your Job"
After Crockett introduces himself, it sounds like Castillo says "Ahhh,. Hi Johnson"
That was perfect cinematic choreography

Best show on television.
One and maybe the most icon, cool, persona ever portraited in the history of television.
Edward James Olmos uniquely combines the mysterious cool attitude with the sense of duty of samurai warrior and creating a long remember beloved character who wrote history and immortality to global television!
I was mostly high when I watched these back in the 1980's. So I don't remember a lot of details. I remember Castillo as a no-nonsense, smart, hard-nosed but compassionate boss. And then there was one episode where Castillo goes full ninja, Spider Man, Rambo. I mean, I think he chopped a guy with a sword in that episode. Memories are all foggy now. He was my favorite character. The 1980's were surrealistic... Ronald Reagan's War on Drugs Part II and Miami Vice... a winning combination.
Says more with facial expressions than most people do with words! Powerful!
I love how he taps on the typewriter.
Castillo's character deserved a prequal series. but I dont think anyone could do it as good as Edward James Olmos
Growing up, I was either CROCKETT or TUBBS. as I get older I channel CASTILLO in staying calm in chaotic situations.
1:30 - 1:45. That alone tells you everything you need to know about Martin Castillo. Period.
Miami Vice . Just an Icon.

Still more cutting edge than any TV series to date.

Such a chill and good performance from Eddie Olmos. i wonder if rumours are true, of Don Johnson and him having frequent discussions on set. Question of ego's?
Even his whistle is epic
Whenever I see Lt. Castillo I always picture him saying, "What were you thinking son! Who's that laughing, is that Selena?!"
The opening of Miami Vice every week was great when it was on every week. Kicked the weekend off (when you were home rather than out).
Nothing in 2021 compares.
It was said that Don Johnson and Edward Olmos (Lt. Castillo) couldn't stand each other for the longest time...
