  • In this video, I show how I critique and finish the plein air painting I started en plein air on the Puyallup River. I start with a scumble - a thin, opaque glaze of specific color - to harmonize the painting and then retouch the painting to make it more pleasing and finished.

Your colors are gentle🌸. The scenery looks soft🌿✨. It has an impressionist charm🌈. I think it would look great in a frame.👍

I much enjoyed the part two on this painting. It is good to see that you are pragmatic about the results of en plein air painting. There are so many decisions to make - some panels are fine, some need some work and some are duds! The amendments you made add to the delight and mystery of the location - Bravo! I signed up for Ian Roberts 6 week composition course, half way through exercises for week two. Very well designed and ordered - even the IT works! The most difficult task was to evenly shade a 4” square. Moving on to simplification of composition by use of rectangles and graduated shading. Very helpful in knowing how to leaf out detail. It coincided with a nasty respiratory infection which has kept me in while we have had cold sunny weather. Fortunately the out of hours medical service worked and I have some antibiotic and a steroid Bomato clear the airways and infection in lungs and sinus. Never had Covid but not had a cold since early 2019!

Thanks so much for the feedback Ian! Sorry to hear about your health problem, hope you are recovering quickly! I’ve been on a road trip painting in Northern Washington this weekend - so cold and windy though I had to do some painting from the window. Take care and get well soon ❤️‍🩹

Gorgeous work! When I compared the beginning painting to what you ended up with, your beginning was good, but your end painting was even better :) So funny how our brains just go all symmetrical automatically, so that we artists have to intentionally fight that. Mine does too. Often I use the camera on my phone to take a picture of my work, as I go. It gives me perspective so that I can see things that I should change. It helps. Anyway, thanks for sharing your process with us.

A bit of a view from the inside of the sausage factory as far as the decision making process in creating art.
