    that LP needs some constant tuning, plus oil, natural climate moisture ups and downs, and breaking in... it sounds way too tight and dry.
    any new percussion instrument will sound flat(not as good as it should), because the Skin is trying to settle(its an animal skin with tree slabs trying to become an instrument.
    and just by letting it season, day after day, then it might turn into a musical device, if you get the same LP with a couple years of use and care, it will sound BIGGER, deeper, brighter and funkier than a new one... the wood needs to settle as well... even the metal hardware will conform and allow for it's(the whole thing) true sounding self to shine through...
    how often you play it and how you keep it, will also improve the final results... best thing is buying an used but well kept Djembe, or spend some 100 hours breaking-in those *raw materials into a good sounding drum.

    Djembe Lp is sensational ❤️

    After all this time, I definitely prefer the 10' Remo. I have had a hard time finding a drum outside of a goat skin djembe head that sounds better than the 10' Remo.

    Ten inches is too small. You drum well and remo are good drums but ten inches is too small. Honestly, the 12 inches is kinda small too. Go bigger.

    i know it goes against tuning protocol, but sometimes I tune the edges high slap way tight and keep the side I hit the bass notes with looser. I dont mean to do extreme differences in the tension, just mess around until you get the sound you want. Have fun with your jim-bee's lol

    • @drum2one93
      @drum2one93 7 років тому

      Careful with those types of tunings because if you leave the drum tuned like that, over time you can distort its shell. Just use those tunings when you play and return the drum to even tunings afterwards would be my suggestion.

    I'm still not certain. The small remo has great highs and mids, but lacks good bass. I've managed to get a decent bass from it by using a good mic and mixing board for live performances. The LP720X has great bass, and I may just need to try adjusting the tension more. I bought it because of the videos I just linked to in comments, but I have yet to get the same sound this that one for some reason.

    12" is just a bit too big unless for studio use imo, the 10" Dj would be optimum for transport, ease of use and a much crisper and more accurate sound. My def choice for finger triplets etc as well as for attention-grabbing sound-compressed street work

  • @hollowwallsendmiseryforest8709

    In my preference, remo 10

    Can I ask............. how long did it take you to learn Djembe? I am just beginning on bongos and djembe............self teaching. Would you reccomend lessons? I have some basic techniques you use, bu tyou just inspired me.......... wish you were local and could show me!!!!!!!

    • @Puritan830
      @Puritan830  10 років тому +3

      Yeah, I learned from watching others and just listening to music and playing along. For this reason, my playing style tends to imitate an actual drum set instead of particularly sounding like or using techniques unique to the djembe as an African drum. For lessons, I'd recommend checking out Turbochicken Studios stuff, he's got quite a few lessons, but I wouldn't worry about all his counting. I played oboe in college orchestra and wind symphony, and unless you know music already, his counting won't help that much as just feeling the beat of the music being played. I read music when playing the oboe or guitar, but for djembe or cajon, I tend to play by ear.

    The Remo sounds far superior. Someone gave me a Remo "cable drum" which is basically a conga with a Remo plastic head. Doesn't make sense for a plastic head to be on this drum..

    he doesn't know how to play djembe with djembe hand technique, the remo sounds better just because he has more practice with it and on the lp one he is not hitting the righ places...

    So this style of djembe playing is called "free style"vs traditional when you learn traditional hand technique and traditional West African rhythms. "Free style" djembe and other hand drumming is mainly used in the drum circle/facilitation classes vs traditional African/djembe classes with traditional rhythms and traditional West African dance.Most people in traditional djembe culture use hand carved rope tuned drums vs manufactured key tuned drums.Just a little info in case someone out here needs it.

    Your not holding the drum right, it should tilted at an angle ,front side down . Babatunde Olatunji does a hour long how to play the drum You-Tube video , he is the greatest hand drummer in the world ,you can learn from the master .

    Great sounds, LP makes a quality Instrument. That said, I have a 12" and 14" Remo Mondo Djembe, and Love those drums, my larger Remos have descent sustain, any Drum being tuned to tight, can quill the sustain on any drum

    I was wondering could you tell me how did you tune your Remo djembe, it has great highs and mids as you say, and don't have that ring, famous for all remo djembes? Thank you!

    Remo sounds better on the bass. Too big of a head rings out too long. The smaller heads sound great
