    Vai is a better 'interviewer' than anyone else that has talked to Yngwie in the last 35 years.

    Steve Vai saying he couldn't match Yngwie back then, it said so much. I was shocked the first time i'd read that note, but hearing it from Steve himself right here right now... man...

    I miss the days of having a record album. I loved the album cover art. When I was in art college in the late 80s/early 90s my whole walls were covered top to bottom with album covers. I also had a guitar god wall (and both of you were on it.) I loved reading all of the thank you's and liner notes, and lyrics. You just don't get that today. My introduction to Yngwie was from one of my good friends, Mario Parillo (who was then in a band called Oktober but later on went to play for Doro.) It was Rising Force. I had a jean jacket that I painted the Trilogy album cover on the back. SO many people wanted that jacket!!! I wore that thing til it was in shreds. Steve, I discovered you in Crossroads in 1986. HAD to know who you were and I was obsessed. Blessed to have gotten to see you on all of your Whitesnake tours. (Had a hand painted t-shirt with the band on it that was the envy of all my fellow metalheads.) SO cool to see you guys together here. What a blast! Keep on rockin', my guitar heroes.

    I’ve introduced Yngwie to dozens of other guitarists and I love watching their reactions to songs like “far beyond the sun”, they always the same look in their faces I had when I first heard YJM almost 40 years ago.. that confused look.. but… how?? Why?? 🤯
    -Because he can! And because “more is more”!!! Lol

    Nice to hear this storys. When I was Young I tried to learn Yngwies solos listening to vinyl and casetts. No UA-cam back then. It was difficult to learn. Later I came over some casetts so I could learn Yngwie solos note by note. Solos like Iam a viking, Disiples of hell and other songs. This was 1984,86. It was so funny to learn when You knrew how he did his fast stuff. Yngwie inspierd so many Young guitar players back then. Almost everybody tried to do Yngwiestuff in my hometown back then!

      He practiced. That’s how he became so good. He even practiced in the crapper! But he has a sense of melody and style that is pure talent.

    • @gathda
      @gathda 2 роки тому +24

      Having natural talent _and_ practicing a lot really helps. I read a book on neuroscience in which they explain pathways as rubber bands - some people can stretch certain bands easily (thin rubber bands, due to genetics), but it takes others a lot of work to stretch them (thick rubber bands). Having thick bands doesn't mean you can't do it, and achieve the same level, it just means it's easier for those with thin bands. There are also certain age spans in our development where band-stretching is easier. That's why it's so important to expose kids to things when they are young. Mindfulness and sheer force of will helps a lot, too. You have to want it.

      @@gathda Exactly this. "I wish I could play guitar" people say, I reply "you can, practice" thanks for the info on pathways and why some things come easier for others and may be harder for others, very interesting!

    Absolutely LOVELY to see & hear both Yngwie & Steve together talking about old times......In the 1980s they were both the premiere up and coming rock guitar talent setting new levels of technical virtuosity. I think in Alcatrazz in the mid 1980s Yngwie's shoes were very big & difficult to fill but I think Steve did a formidable job & put his own stamp on great early Yngwie compositions. Both Yngwie and Steve played their parts in great musical bands back then but it was so obvious that sooner or later BOTH would carve out unique names for themselves as players, going solo & calling all the creative shots (which is the way it should be.) Exceptional talent deserves exceptional latitude to flourish....4:05 - 'Steve - '& I'm completely unknown. I'm just this weird guy that's NOT Yngwie' ....🤔 Story of my LIFE guys ,,,,(sob !) 😪 ....lolol ...Lovely to hear Yngwie's stories when he was very young. Was Yngwie FIRING people when he was only10 years old ?? .....lol🤣 I think Mike Varney discovered Ron Thal too. I remember EVH discovering Yngwie by listening to radio. In a guitar player interview in 1987 Edward said he & Hagar were driving in Ed's car really fast cross country and on the car radio as they were speeding they heard on it Yngwie playing solo sections from Rising Force...And Hagar said Eddie's single line reaction was - 'THE GUY IS PLAYING SOME STUFF MAN' ! ....With Steve , Ed knew of Steve through Frank (Zappa) ....Ed would go round his studio when Steve was there. Steve would transcribe Ed's solos for guitar player magazine which was nice....When Steve & Billy Sheehan were hired by Mr. Roth Ed said - 'Steve & Billy are two of the best around. Obviously Dave has hired two of the hottest guns in town to replace us'.....There was never any competition between Steve & Ed ......The press talked it up & fans. I also remember Frank Zappa singing Yngwie's praises as a player way back in the 1980s even though their types of music were very different.....I first heard Yngwie on No Parole For Rock n Roll in 1985 when I knew Bob the Scorpions Tour Manager back then in Hendon coming off world tour...He played me that album & I was flabbergasted by his clean speed, accuracy , emotional intensity & neo classical flavour.....Steve had a bad press with me to begin with because I assumed he was like the cruel Jack Butler character in the movie Crossroads who took sadistic pleasure in destroying other players confidence but later I found out Steve wasn't like that guy at all...Steve is a PUSSYCAT really..lol..😺....Its funny how easy it is to get the wrong negative idea about someone I guess.

    I just started playing base guitar when I heard Rising Force. It changed my life, I sold my bass and got an electric guitar, went on to suffered for years trying to figure out how to play like you. Great interview between total legends.
