No fake, pumped up torsos crammed into tight fitting vests, no water bottles running on to the pitch every five minutes, no predictable grunting one dimensional forwards killing the game, just pure Rugby played with natural flare and passion, the modern game has been ruined beyond recognition.
Cant agree with you more. And I still referee, and every year there are law changes that make the game even worse. Goal line drop outs? Ridiculous! If anything, a team that can keep a try from being scored from multiple pick and go phases should get a 22 drop out as a reward!
Yes, it used to be a player’s game, but since it went professional in ‘95, everything is geared toward the spectator and the ‘bums on seats’ - I grew up in a rugby household and played through both eras - the stop/start nature and the law changes have absolutely wrecked the game - it has become boring in my view ( and I loved rugby with a passion.) So sad, but... the ‘love of money’.
Remember watching this as an 18 year old..last days of a great era in rugby. Bennett retired after this match, followed by Gareth Edwards...two of the all time greats
Biggest difference of all....these guys were amateurs and all had day jobs. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, farmers and miners. Those were the days when playing rugby was huge fun and the after game gathering a time to remember.
Yes, but that might take a breakaway league or something like that. My reply above about baseball being played by some in the US with equipment, clothing, rules of the game as played in the 1880s and 1890s worth noting. I'd love to see rugby played under laws of the 1970s, cotton shorts and shirts, leather ball.
Then Rupert Murdoch got the rugby head honchos to start turning the game into something like rugby league, starting in 1993. It's only gotten even worse. Goal line drop out? Are you kidding me? I referee. The other weekend I had to think whether to award a 22 or goal line drop out. A 22 happened to be the right decision.
To those replying below: yes, I think the game was much better in my old playing days, 70s, 80s. I have an idea based on the fact that in America some baseball is played with equipment/uniforms of the 1880s and 1890s, balls, bats, gloves. Rules are from that time too. I think rugby needs something similar: a separate game of 70s rugby, and World Rugby would object, but F them!
That's right. Makes sense. Perfect sense in fact. You'll not see heavy-weight boxers in the 70s and 80s built like today's rugby players. Money or not. Folk keep selling out.
Austin Roberts True, but if they played with the rules that were enforced back then,i.e. none it would still be fun.Oh,and it would be nice to watch hookers having to hook and scrum halves not feeding into the second row.
Steve fenwick ....what a clever allround player he was .

Oui Ian ! C'est ça !
@@crislarew5915 trying to keep the game flowing, referee not involved with scrum set up .. genius 😂
@@WELLBRAN Ha ! Ha ! Au diable l'arbitre !

I played on this turf... best rugby day of my life. Walking on there thinking of all the legends who had played on there, spine chilling.
The magic Wales of the 70 years, what a Great Slam!!❤🎉🎉🎉
So many one handed passes, offloads, a running drop goal - back when rugby was great!
Players trying to keep the game flowing...who would have thought?...scrums sorted out quickly without ref telling them how to do it!
I'm English but used to love watching Phil Bennett - mercurial player. Fenwick was an underrated player. Miss rugby with so much space!
fuck the modern game, I am proud to have played in this era when ordinary men played extraordinarily
That's the best summary of rugby today I've seen 👍👍👍
Yes , fuck the modern game , come French , you speak very well , I don't like the new Rugby.
1:47 great tackle by JPR Williams
Biggest difference of all....these guys were amateurs and all had day jobs. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, farmers and miners. Those were the days when playing rugby was huge fun and the after game gathering a time to remember.
Absolutely fantastic.
Edwards & Benetts last game for Wales. Great memories!
Scrums organised without one word from the ref ...no video playback decisions so in fact a faster game then
❤❤ very good and thanks for the video !! ❤❤ Come French

Magnifiques les maillots français d alors
Et les maillots gallois ???
Look a the length of time that Bennett took to kick compared to now
And quick to set up a scrum without ref telling them how to do it!
This is rugby when rugby was rugby glad i played then not now
Would be a great start to rugby reinvention to go back to no lifting in the line outs

Alan Welsby was my PE teacher
Jpr is a rock what a hard men
JPR was a great player, absolutely fantastic surgeon he repaired my elbow, God bless Him.
Forwards contested for the ball in those days instead of spreading across the pitch.

Phill Bennett, Grand Slam Captain!!!❤️❤️❤️
Back when it was running rugby

DE LA CHANCE CES GALLOIS
Equipe magnifique, les francais tres forts aussi

Different body shapes back then. More NORMAL. Where did it all go wrong?
Noodles37UK These guy's would get slaughtered by the guy's today
Austin Roberts I know. It's big money now, that's the competition. Today's rugby players don't even look like the most ripped boxers of any era.
Noodles37UK I guess when they became professionnals in the 90's...

Phil Bennett
The ball they used was smaller?
No, if anything a tiny bit bigger, and leather. Rubber balls started to replace them in the early 80s. Then they got ever so slightly slimmer.
Back then the defences were pretty bad ant it was really messy at the breakdown but the runs were great.
Because they tried to keep the game flowing
We should replay these games in full on tv now show how rugby should be played not the soft game they play now the croudare the plays aswell
How better the scrums and look how players got on with things. France brilliant runners like Wales, what has happened to French flair?
Watch
I think they have the best back line in the game as of 2022.
A penalty for a crooked put in,how quaint!!!!!!!
A shambles
Idiot.
