    On Trump talking about "The late, great Hannibal Lecter", the current theory making the rounds is that Trump always seems to mention him when discussing asylum seekers, and that it seems he doesn't understand that "asylum" has more than one meaning, and so word associates them with a fictional character who lives in an asylum

      In the rambling rally speeches, it is used as a one liner (I'm sure Trump has convinced himself he invented it, so tickled he is with delivering it) seque to the migrant crime wave fiction. His schtick is insult comic and he needs one liners as a palate cleanser from time to time. His talent at this is just slightly higher than JD "Crickets" Vance

    The real question here is why the KC defending Letby put up such an astonishingly weak case
    This was a big case for him with lots of attention from the media and peers and he appears to have phoned in a half hearted defense that a legal aid intern (or random journalist) could easily have surpassed
    So he's either guilty of total incompetence or threw the case for some reason - to this day, experts willing to defend Letby still don't know why they weren't called to give evidence
    A simple defense would be:
    1) There's no evidence of any murder occurring, all the autopsies were completely normal
    2) There is no evidence at all of Letby ever harming a child
    3) The prosecution's expert witness is highly dubious, with many other experts disagreeing completely with his ludicrous hypothesis
    4) Most of Letby's colleagues believe she is innocent and were willing to give glowing character references
    That alone is enough to put reasonable doubt in the minds of any juror

      You sound like a goddamn bleeding-heart liberal. Which is what people in the Zealot Wing of Conservatism would call me. Thanks for the layout of the points.
      To be clear, I have no firm belief of Lucy Letby's innocence, but it seems to me as though her Counsel failed, perhaps because it was not going to be popular if she was found Not Guilty. Certainly I hope that some grounds are found for an appeal. If only to better hone the Justice system. My favourite quote from the analysis, "Clearly it shows that Lucy Letby was on duty, when Lucy Letby was on duty."
      Using data (not really worthy of the title "Statistics") to prove multiple counts of murder, is a frightenly flawed basis. Overwhelming evidence was not presented, and contrary evidence, or reframing the question, was not used as a defence. Not encouraging.

    Fascinating contribution by Phil Hammond on the Lucy Letby case. I agree wholeheartedly that the trial was not satisfactory, our adversarial system does us no favours in such cases. So she languishes in prison, quite possibly completely innocent, whilst more violent and aggressive offenders are let out early to counter prison overcrowding. Well, they had no make some room for the vicious Just Stop Oil mob.

    I think we could be looking at a horrifying miscarriage of justice in the Letby case. One thing you don't cover though is Letby's diary, which the press at any rate made a great deal of. Personally I don't consider it compelling evidence of guilt - it could equally be evidence of mental breakdown or brain-dumping under pressure -, particularly since on the very same page she appears to confess to the crimes she also appears to deny them, but it would be good to have MD's take on this.
    Could this even have been a failing department seizing on a convenient scapegoat?

    • @slingo1246
      @slingo1246 Місяць тому

      Lucy Letby agreed in court that there was undoubtedly a poisoner working her shift. There are also no deaths when she wasn’t around. There were actually 13 deaths in her final year, she was present at ALL of them. There are also two children here who have serious liver trauma, an expert likened it to something you’d see in a car crash.she falsified medical notes and stole confidential paper work relating to these baby’s and stored it under her bed in a box labelled keep… she searched for the parents of these babies on social media years later in clusters, and remember no one had grouped these babies together at this point, she wasn’t just searching for dead children’s families, how does she explain grouping these children together before anyone else. You have her in her police interview denying knowing what air embolisms were, when she’d taken a course explaining them in the months before the murders… babies do NOT die unexpectedly at such an alarming rate. There are exceptions to the rules but there aren’t 7 this is a coincidence too far, Lucy is guilty, she did this on purpose because she is not good enough to care for them, she is evil

    • @slingo1246
      @slingo1246 Місяць тому +1

      One of the key thing that was not talked about here was the keep sakes/trophies being saved for these children and research into the families after the deaths by Letby.
      There is also a confession written out although it could be that she was blaming herself for a mistake not a deliberate action.
      I was actually quite disappointed these were not raised in the discussion here. These do have possible explanations too but are very suspicious.

    "Bye-Biden" ? This was suggested to me several times, and I decided initially that I did not want to devote 49 minutes to a forensic examinationi of the man. I have always had time for Dr. Hammond (and Dr. Goldacre, and others) and did not realise that amongst the "Burn The Witch" hysteria surrounding Lucy Letby, there was a deeper level that had not been given quite so much coverage.
    Therefore, I would have listened to this earlier if the title had been expanded to include some of the other subjects.

    Would Private Eye like to ‘investigate’ why the UK has no requirement for building designers to be qualified in any way? After the Grenfell Tower fire the new Building Safety Act does require building designers to be ‘competent’ and immeasurable quality. It would be easy to legislate that ALL building designers needed to be registered/licensed/chartered building design professionals. Most developed nations on the planet do only allow the appropriately qualified person to design buildings. Even dog walkers must be registered within some local council areas!

    • @bsastarfire250
      @bsastarfire250 Місяць тому +1

      The ''designer'' was an Architect aka registered. He relied on specialist cladding fabricators, who relied on information given by cladding manufacturers. The contractor/ site supervision also could/should have raised queries . The report should be out soon , so interesting to see its conclusion. ''Competency '' is defined in some situations eg gas fitters, electricians , but just because someone is not demonstrably competent, does not mean they are incompetent !

    • @johnkellett7797
      @johnkellett7797 Місяць тому +1

      @@bsastarfire250, half correct. The decisions not to follow the architect’s original specification were made by client and contractor because they wanted it cheaper. The materials they chose had fake fire safety certificates, the building had been ‘repaired’ and ‘altered’ by the client such that it no longer met the requirements of the building regulations of its original construction. The architects had to agree as they, by that time were contracted to the contractor not council or end-user.

The materials ''Fire Certification'' was based in some cases on fire testing procedures which had been dodgy , if not illegal. The ''alterations'' o the building included an upgrade of the existing smoke ventilation system and removal of a central fire alarm system. I have spent many hours watching the inquiry and it is interesting, educational , sad, a pot-pouri of errors which accumulated . eg lifts were not working properly , water pressure too low, fire service communication failures etc etc.

    • @johnkellett7797
      @johnkellett7797 Місяць тому

      @@bsastarfire250, indeed. Most of the failures had nothing to do with the architect and most were due to failures of management of the building by client or contractor. The reason why it takes a minimum of seven years to qualify as an architect is to provide us with the necessary skills to design any building type. I had never designed a house or housing estate before doing so. I had never designed a hospital either before doing so. That is why the UK needs architects not un(der)qualified building designers who, in most countries are not allowed to design buildings without qualifying and registering. Why does the UK not introduce such legislation? Corruption or ‘vested interests’?

    Her presence in the wrong room where a baby died instead of being in the room she was supposed to be in providing 1 to 1 care to another baby.

    Dr Hall’s conclusion is extremely flawed. He says he thinks these babies were far sicker than the prosecution portrayed, however in his report for baby K. He cannot rule old the prosecution experts conclusions of air embolism as this baby’s cause of death, he also can offer no alternative to what the prosecutions regarding cause of death, if the babies are “sicker” than portrayed then why can’t he put forward a cause of death? Ultimately we are left with no one putting anything other than air embolism forward as a cause of death for at least baby A. What are we supposed to believe? Dr Hall does try to mitigate this fact though by saying the air embolism could have been “accidental” and i mean you might get away with that once, but not for 3-4 deaths…

      @@yingyang1008 there were two babies in this case that Lucy Letby herself AGREED were deliberately poisoned with insulin, so we already have foul play. SOME of the babies that died did have post mortems yes, however many of these post mortems didn’t end in a cause of death being recorded. Granted foul play wasn’t found at the time, but you have to remember these children NEVER left the hospital, pathologists, rightly or wrongly are looking for natural causes with a biased eye, again these babies never left the hospital.

      @@slingo1246 The fact is that there is no proof of a murder having taken place
      There is also no proof of any kind of Letby ever harming a child
      Call me old fashioned - but if was a juror on a murder case, I would first what to see proof that a murder had actually occurred
      All we have is a hypothesis by a very dubious 'expert' - a hypothesis which is found to be ludicrous by plenty other experts
      The entire case is a shambolic embarrassment and actually quite terrifying
      I genuinely find it terrifying that people like yourself may one day be required to serve on a jury

    Why can't you pronounce Kamala's name as she does, i.e., correctly? Is it that large an intellectual leap? I don't even think it's an accident. I think its a pompous English choice - 'I'll say it as I think it should be said'

      You caaaaant be English if you don't stretch a vowel or two, deeeear. I lived in that country for 4 years. I was regularly referred to as "that Irish guy" because the non-rhotic English had trouble with an R in the middle of my surname. Or suuuuhname, if you will. They call Fiorenza "Florence", Munchen "Munich" and gay Pareee boring old "Paris". It's just their thing, mispronunciation. They have their good qualities, too. Sometimes. I recall.
