This is 1991 - only reason I know this is because my nan and her friend are in it, and her friend moved to St Albans in 1991 and passed in 1992. It's also likely a Wednesday market as the place isn't anywhere near busy enough for a Saturday, and there's no kids around (only a few in buggies).
Note the stacked empty boxes discarded by fruit and veg stalls. Better quality than any supermarket and cheaper. Fresh from the London market, not from a supermarket distribution centre. Sainsbury killed off, butchers shops, bakers, delicatessens, wet fish shops, chemists. Now they have shut down their respective counters. The council want to turn this town into retirement home, bring back the old market, so we have a reason to shop in town. You can only drink so much coffee, visit charity shops or buy mobile phones and spectacles. The only choices in this town.
Summer 1991 only months before the november 1991 IRA Car bomb blew themselves up and took out Barclays bank opposite Tescos, I remember it well i used to walk past that bank at least once a week. St Peters Steet retail is now a shadow of what it was then. In the evenings there used be a Hot dog van outside M&S run by a couple of east europeans that made hot dogs with real pork sausages, it attracted Bikers from miles around, used to go up their on my Honda 250 get a Hot dog and have a chat. never saw any trouble but the police closed it down because M&S and other retailers were worried their windows could get broken if trouble broke out?
My mum and her best friend are in this video walking through the market.
Both have sadly passed away now.
Lovely to see them both.xx

1991 - the BT shop logo at 5:11 gives it away
This was when St. Albans was a great place to live and shop, such a shame it has gone downhill very badly.
That brings back memories 😊
This seems to be footage of St Albans, driving up St Peter's St
no timestamp on this but looks like circa 1990
Amazing
Summer 1990 cheap market flammable shell suit all the rage😊
Wednesday or a Saturday?, thats the question
This has to be around 1990-1991
1990s?
Not sure if Tesco's was better then than it is now (free plastic bags, lol. Could have as many as you wanted(Any store)).

Its got worst post covid/brexit. The modern day St Albans market is a ghost of what it once was.
Before mobile phones came along and destroyed society.

It was a great place back then, now just part of the commuter belt , extortionate house prices and selfish people with their own agenda. Such a shame.
The time that fashion forgot....😂
This is NOT the High Street. This is St Peter's Street.
0:54 gotta be 90’s, shell suit Britain
