In this video, you'll discover how to turn any audio (even drum loops) into MIDI melodies by using Ableton Live's audio-to-MIDI function. My name is Philip from Pick Yourself, and I've created this channel to help electronic music producers like you make meaningful progress with their music.
Writing melodies in electronic music can be a real challenge. But today, I've got a creative solution for you. We're going to dive deep into Ableton Live and explore its most underrated gem, the audio-to-MIDI function.
Now, you might be wondering, why is this function so shockingly good? Well, it's because it allows you to take any audio material, yes, even those drum loops you've been hoarding, and transform them into MIDI melodies. This is a game-changer for producers in genres like Techno, House, and EDM, where producers notoriously struggle with writing lead lines and melodies.
In this tutorial, I'll walk you through the steps to unlock the full potential of this creative effect in Ableton Live. We'll go beyond the basics and explore some simple hacks to turn even the most mundane audio clips into exciting and unique MIDI melodies.

I heard that Timbaland likes to hum ideas into a mic and then convert that to MIDI. Neat trick if you have a sound in your head but can't or don't have the skills to run that through a keyboard.

This was a surprise. I came across this feature by accident when I failed to drag a drum loop into an audio channel and threw it into a MIDI channel instead. However, I didn't dare to work with it. But I will give it a try.

It works especially well with tonal percussion loops that have a large variety in the sounds.

    So... a randomise feature.
I gotta say, it's not the idea way of making legible, intelligent, emotional, patterns
It does not always work - more often than not, it will sound terrible. Would it not be better to practice improvisation and music theory. Learn some scales, how to inset accidentals, poly playing rhythms in conjunction with your main beat
You'll have to make sure it's in the right key, in the right timing
You might as well just smash the keyboard with step-advance switched on to prevent overlaps and go mad!
