    As a United States Navy vet, thank you. To all of the veterans out there, my most humblest gratitude. My wife and I had the honor to come to the UK and to Normandy for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. We were humbled and inspired by what Britain and France endured and overcame to work toward Victory. God Bless from the USA.

      @MerihemXx 7 місяців тому +3

      @@strongarm1129 Great Britain used some version of the Lee Enfield as her main infantry rifle until they adopted the FAL (The L1A1 SLR in British service), even then, the Lee Enfield was still used as a sniper rifle in some form until the adoption of the Accuracy International PM (the L96A1). The version Mike has is a No.4. Particularly a No.4 Mk2 I think, which is a late war production with a couple simplifications. It is a vastly improved version of the venerable No.1 Mk3* that was used in WW1, but it's still a bolt-action rifle at the end of the day. It's worth mentioning that the United States was unique in the fact that our main infantry rifle at the time (the M1 Garand) is semi-automatic. Other semi-auto military rifles existed, but not as a general issued arm. The fact that Britain was still using a bolt-action rifle in WW2 was absolutely on par with other countries at the time, and I would argue the No.4 rifle is second only to the M1 Garand as a main battle rifle. I own both and love them dearly.

Take away the reason for war and we're all the same with mostly the same wants & needs. My take away from this video was what I just described. U nailed it here, my friend from across the pond. As an aside. I'm 60 now .. in my teens one of my best buds grandmother's would make a button down lapel overcoat out of surplus Army blankets for her male family members . Typically it took 3 blankets to make one overcoat. I always appreciated my buds coat when he got it....
    One day I was surprised when she made me one. In the late 70s I knew a local source fir surplus US wool army blankets for $3 each or $24 a dozen.. on my meager teen age earnings I bought her 2 dozen out of gratitude. She got a big tear and gave me a kiss on the cheek

    Mike that was one of the best videos i have seen this year. As a veteran, but also a fifth generation British soldier tracing my generations back to the Crimea and Boer Wars I grew up with Grandparents, and Great Grandparents I knew in my childhood who served WW1 & WW2, as well my father and then myself who did our own tours in turn. My childhood was growing up in the protective and inspiring shadow of such men and ironically we grew up playing in some of these tents and even as a very young lad in the late 70s I can remember camping out in one with my Grandad who also taught us how to brew up using a 'Benghazi Burner' cooker whilst teaching me to bull up my boots as a young lad.
    It was great to see this and bring back some childhood memories and I really appreciated the poppy and the respectful act of remembrance at the end of this video.
    One of my Grandfathers who served in the BEF, came back via Dunkirk, then after becoming a Paratrooper went over to Normandy at D Day., made it all the way through and came home but never once spoke to his family about the war. When I was just about to join up myself he said to me 'A soldier or veteran never has to ask himself if he ever did anything worthwhile with his life’.

    I remember getting a proper canvas tent for Xmas one year - about 1969 from memory - and apart from the poles and pegs being aluminium and the colour being navy it was identical to this in every way... Great memories and it lasted me nearly 30 years before the canvas was too rotten to be used any longer. We would put down dad's tarp which he used as a trailer cover to use as the ground sheet covered with old curtains normally used as drop/dust sheets and then an old sheet and blanket on top to sleep under. Spent many happy summer nights ''camping'' in the back garden with that tent. Thank you for reminding me of some very happy times.
    As for the camp bed/stretcher, I slept for months on one of them as a child when my grandparents visited us from the UK - we lived in NZ at the time - and we were one bed short, a neighbour lent their stretcher and I volunteered to sleep on it. It wasn't that bad (I would have been 11 at the time) and you soon learned not to move about too much in case it tipped over.
    Great memories, in many ways times then were better than they are now even if it was the simpler things that made it that way.

    I had an uncle who landed on D Day and was taken POW 3 weeks later, another uncle who was with the 8th Army through North Africa and Italy. My father was out in Burma and I served for 9 years in the British Army. Thanks for this, had me thinking about the 3 of them. As a quick aside, That isn't the way the webbing goes together. The straps you have around your legs go from the back of the belt over your shoulders with the ammo pouches on them. The small pack fits as you have it. This is 37 pattern webbing, issued 1937, which we used when I did my basic training in the mid 70s. Once again Thankyou for this sombre remembrance.

    I loved sleeping in wall tents. Did my time in them at Scout camp. Went 5 yrs in a row to it, when in the BSA.:Have fond memories of it, Camp Lewellan. Even had a trading post, did horse back riding, had a pool nd learned swimming, ever tapped out for the OA..... loved it! Always wanted to put a stove jack in and do some hot tenting, in later years. I m 70 now and a Cold War Vet from 70s. My 155 Howitzer unit guarded front door thru the Fulda gap in Germany. Tined with NATO Forces at Graf and Wildflicken in the North.. Brr it was cold there.

    the intro was sweet. Only thing missing was a Willys MB. In the pan to the woods between scenes of kicking leaves out of the tent, I kept expecting to hear tank tracks.
    Well bloody done!
