I remember doing this at school. The first year I hated it because we had to dance with girls but, the second year I loved it for the same reason. What a difference a year makes. A culture that must be kept.

Well, I'm a young US American that's being taught our own national version of this (square dance)in school and wishing you never invented us...kinda have to like in terms of culture, but its just soooooo boring

@@marymalinowski7991 in the future you will appreciate this. So many people have the misfortune of growing up without a culture.

@@marymalinowski7991 it's a simple dance yes, but at least there's some structure to it and has no complicated footwork to learn. Yeah, others dances like swing, tango, cutting shapes/shuffle are more impressive, but once drunk and in envy of having a good time with a girl, those country dances are hard to beat.
I've got so bored of club "dance floor" where people just put their hands up while shouting "woop woop" that old dances are so refreshing. With these you can actually express yourself and the other has time to read that and judge if you are a good match.

Brill. I remember doing this dance at school. It was fun & enjoyable. Shame the kids aren't taught traditional dance in school these days.

I dreamed of learning this as a child. This dance is an age when courtship was pure and beautiful

Used in the 2nd book by Deborah Harkness Trilogy A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night. So nice to see it for real.

It is! My weekly English country dance group hasn't done it in ages and I have a hankering for it now.

I never saw your comment until now; I don't often look back at this video. Historically, you're probably correct. Shoulder-to-shoulder, Pat Shaw style siding was likely used. But the instructions don't specify, and I think that swirly, Cecil Sharp style siding fits the raucous feel of the dance and the music better. But that's just my personal preference.

Nice to see a bit of Sharp siding out in the world 🙂
