      can you look into the SLi + G-sync performance issues. Nvidia is still advertising it as working seamless but Gsync cost -15%-30% fps if used with SLi. does not seem to effect DX12

      Small typo in the timestamp overlay "drives" should be "drivers" but you read it like it should be so its not a big issue.

    Steve, thank you for coming out and addressing this again even though you didn’t have to. I don’t the exact details, specifically how the information got out and if it was from the ad-company, but I do think you should definitely look into legal action if the company is not willing to issue a public retraction.

  • @dickr9345

    The fact that after everything Steve refuses to out them speaks volumes to his morals and ethics. Admittedly I kinda wanna know so I can not support them in the future, if I ever would happen to.
    OTOH I got mad respek for Steve's decision to afford them anonymity, even when they've showed cowardice WRT publicly apologizing and insisted the issue be swept under the rug in favor of 'everyone going back to making money' which in itself shows where their loyalties truly reside.

    • @bakadeshi_aunstudios
      @bakadeshi_aunstudios 6 років тому +1

      "which in itself shows where their loyalties truly reside" - Literally every company on the planet. what do you think a company is run for? To make money. Very rarely is money not the main aim of a company, but because the person/owner is passionate about the product instead, and usually those don't get that far unfortunately.

    • @evangrove2131

      Won't post the name directly if Steve didn't want it in his video, but there is a post on LTT forum from June 14 that has a screenshot of the message, with the name of the person who posted it. A google search of said person's name quickly reveals the affiliated company

    • @dickr9345
      @dickr9345 6 років тому

      Kareef Huggins I believe you've taken that quote out of context. Maybe my choice of words wasn't the best.
      You seem to believe a company cannot be loyal to the truth &/or the consumer as well as make money.
      Companies can exist to make money without being loyal to only money. The two are not mutually exclusive.
      GN is a prime example of being loyal to the truth &/or consumer while also earning money honestly.
      If Nvidia called Steve and said "Hey man, ease up on the GT 1030 DDR4 card, maybe you could accidently delete that vid you made and all the data? Besides, We've been meaning to reimburse you for that Titan V you bought with your own money anyway. We can help each other out and get back to making money. It's a win-win for both of us"
      Steve wouldn't be okay with that, because while he does need money to operate his business, he also needs his consumers to trust him. By remaining loyal to the truth he can make money through patreon, GN store, ETC. and operate his business honestly.

      Dick R I didn't actually mean that as an attack on your comment, I apologize if it came off that way. Was just making a point that most every company, especially with a board of directors and stock holders, are out to make money. Even Tesla, who claims their mission is a noble one to get electric cars main stream still needs to make money to please stake holders. But I agree, it can be done in a way that customer focus is at the forefront. Tesla mostly does this well. This company could have publicly apologized and used it as pr stunt to discipline the guy in question and make them selves look good, that if unless there more to this story than we know, and they don't want that getting out. Any way your not wrong, I was just adding to your comment.

    QUESTION: How does a GPU card determine how much power to draw from the PCI-E slot verses the 6-pin or 8-pin connectors at full load? Is the slot's power draw maxed out first then the remaining needed is drawn from the pin connector or vice versa? Thanks!

    • @Najvalsa
      @Najvalsa 6 років тому +2

      Castaa It's done by design.
      Power delivery doesn't have to be, and most often isn't, split amongst all available power sources.
      The designers know how much what things pull, and know what thing's best suited to get power from where, so they design it/set the traces so that the slot powers X component/s, and the connector/s power/s Y component/s.
      For example, cards can be designed so that only the slot powers the fans, or that connector A has VRMs one to four and connector B has five to eight, because the manufacturer deems it most optimal this way.

      Yes it is interesting a bios update was not required. The 83 watts the cards drew was within tolerance of the socket. Shame on Tom's for not just contacting AMD off-line. Does anyone really think the MB would go into meltdown at any thing over 75 watts? of course not. The RS232C RFC serial spec called for a tolerance of 25V across any two pins to cause no damage.

    I think it was on WAN show that said something in the lines of: "How can someone say GN only covers for money? They openly bash companies!"
    I always liked Gamers Nexus content because of the posts, every single review with a detailed explanation of the test methodology. That alone brought me in this boat. But what completely took me was the H500P first bash, it was the first time I've seen a youtuber bash a product sent to him (and with proper arguments). That is the kind of action that speaks for itself and makes me and other tech affectionates to see these videos/articles. Please keep up your excelent work.
    and while on it,
    #AskGN: what is the effects involved with using a larger fan on a smaller radiator (Say a 200mm fan on a 140mm rad)? I know the "dead zone" in the center may play a big role, but I wonder if there is any benefit from the lateral airflow passing on the exterior of the rad.

    18:09 i recently used "essence quick dry top coat" on my i7-4790 (the cheapest stuff i could find in EU/DE, but it doesn't dry quickly, i recommend 1h per coat, well ventilated, 3 coats …the hi temp silicone glue for relidding requires a night of sleep to cure anyway …not a quick project). I tested that nail polish, prior to actually using it in the real project, with a multimeter in resistance mode, the DMM said OL (Open Line) / infinite* resistance (non-conductive). I also used "Galinstan" (GALlium-INdium-STANum) alloy, extracted from a fever thermometer, rather than Conductonaut. Despite being scolded for my "creative individualism", i achieved a 12°C reduction with the same workload and fan curve; transcoding to h264/mp4, multithreaded on all cores, for over 1 hour, peaked at 69°C; Intel's stock TIM produced 81°C. I'd call that a success. 👍

    Don't use nail polish!!! Just buy some MG Chemicals conformal coating... it can be found on amazon and is popular in the diy racing drone and "maker" communities for diy PCB manufacturing. They even add a clear UV dye to allow you to check coverage. It's cheap and they even have aerosol sprays.

    What's even worse than the trolls and false rumors is you having to explain to people repeatedly how you spend your time at work and how you make money. It's just my opinion here, but it's not anyone's business what or how you do things. They don't go around asking or starting rumors about the "tech guy" at whatever tech store they asked for advice on a product about this shit. Why do they do it to you? People have WAY too much time on their hands nowadays. You put out excellent and obviously unbiased (cough, cough, original CM H500 case, cough, cough, recent NVidia GT 1030 cough, cough, burnt up your own mod mat to answer questions about heat and soldering on it, cough) reviews based on your experience. Keep doing what you do and F*%@ the haters! It's too bad there are so many of these trolls on the internet with nothing better to do with their time. I would really hate to live a life trying to make other people look bad. It really doesn't say much for their own self esteem. I notice that 14 minutes of this video and your time are wasted dealing with this crap and the "real" part of the video and content are around only 10 minutes. So sad these people take up so much time from everyone.

    Quick ideas on ways gamers nexus can generate additional revenue....
    1- Sell prebuilt custom high end systems. Start low volume as custom order only and sell the rigs that you use when testing other hardware configurations. I would be interested in a high end custom open loop water cooled system but I am too scared to build it. I have built over 10 PCs without issues but never with water.
    2- Review games that are not mainstream. Focus on gameplay, replayability, and originality. Rimworld for an example is an amazing game yet very few know about it because of lack of reviews.
    3- Compare console versions of a game with PC version. A lot of people do not know the advantages of PC over console.
    4- Do some reviews of prebuilt systems like those by OEMs or cyberpowerPC. I am sure those Vendors will pay for the advertising.
    Thanks and keep up the good work.

    One thing that you did not mention about "reference vs custom graphics cards for liquid cooling" is the availability of blocks that fit on after market cards. You recommend the EVGA SC2, but that does not always have a block available from all manufacturers as is true for other AM cards. For the SC2, this was due to one extra fan plug extending out of the PCB. I reviewed images of the cards online and validate the differences between SC (block was more commonly available) and SC2. I then bought a block for the EVGA SC card and modded a trench in the block to allow installation. Worked fine. Just one issue with some aftermarket cards. Reference cards seem to always have a block.

    (Ask GN) What has your experience been like with shunt mods? Left, right and center I see peoples resistors falling off on their graphics cards either due to applying way too much or using a different LM to Conductonaut. In my experience Conductonaut has never given me issues (other brand LM I've heard more issues with) even after a year or 2, and I was hoping you + others could give the same sort of positive feedback. If not, I suppose I've just been very lucky so far.

      Pro tip: Stop applying a ton of LM to the solder joints. Problem solved! Great question for next week, though.

    • @C0manso
      @C0manso 6 років тому

      Yeah I've noticed people lather it on until there is basically a frickin lake forming, where as I've never seen why they do this because you only need to make enough contact to bypass it (although it is making some form of contact to solder I think? (referring to the metal on top of the resistor)). My only concern is I know overtime the LM does diffuse into metal, just how far do you think it will do this and even if no LM is touching the joints could it potentially diffuse through eventually? This is almost a tongue twister with the amount of "metal" said, I've had to edit this several times to make sure I put LM instead of "metal into metal"!

      What I don't understand about shunt mods is why not solder a wire bridge in different gauges rather than use LM? Or is the changing in voltages rather a fixed with what tricks the card to deliver more power?

    • @C0manso
      @C0manso 6 років тому +1

      I think people use LM because it's easy to reverse since all you have to do it wipe it off with a bit of acetone or isopropyl (E.g. If something goes wrong and it needs RMA-ing). Anything with less resistance should work honestly, so you're probably right in that aspect as long as it's bypassing the resistor correctly.

    • @PainterVierax
      @PainterVierax 6 років тому +2

      yes it's just to not void warranty. Using gallium (a.k.a. liquid metal) is never a permanent solution because of its problem of polluting other metals and making them melt and you can contaminate other circuits via your tools.
      AFAIR, you can't just put a shunt because of the internal securities of the card. Instead, a proper solution is to replace the SMD resistance and play with the tolerance range. A wire is possible but IMHO it's less convenient to solder and it's harder to aim the value you want.

    #AskGN do GPUs have some kind of "casual-proof" OC protection? I thought so and maxed out the gpu and mem frequencies in my palit oc software, cause I was curious. My PC just restarted and frequencies were back to normal. It worked fine for another 2 days, but suddently it wouldnt start in regular mode, then in safe mode it showed blue and pink vetical lines, destorted colors... I guess I fried it, was this my fault or did I just accelerated the end of product life? It was a GTX 780 Super Jetstream :(

    ASKGN: Hey Steve! First of all great content as always! Love your ethical posture. My question is about the impact of marketing on electronics' prices. Long story short, take the Schiit Audio as an example. As far as I know, they make awesome products "on the cheap" compared to equivalent counterparts, and they are able to do so because they spend almost no money with marketing such as printed boxes and other bs. How do you think such approach would work on computer parts such as motherboards, GPUs, etc.? Thanks a lot!

    Hey Steve, I just saw an older video you made about Rockit Cool's copper IHS plate for Intel 1151 and how you tested it with Conductonaut. That got me thinking about how copper tends to react with liquid metal in a bad way. Have you had any bad experiences with it? Some reports say the reaction is only happening above 80ºC, others say it's at any temp and it's severe. I'm rocking a 8700k with a Kraken X62 and at any stress test, it quickly hits thermal throttling even at 4.7ghz and stock voltage, so I'm really considering delidding it and replacing the paste, along with the IHS. Your thoughts?

    I loved the Q&A about drivers and I guess it explains why there are so few Vulkan and DX 12 games. They may be great APIs, but they shift the workload from the driver team at AMD/Nvidia to the development team. And considering that Windows 10 adoption is still not what older Windows OS' achieved and that AMD is No. 2 in the GPU game by a very significant margin, and that means supporting Vulkan/DX12 means you're putting in potentially much more work for the benefit of a smaller audience. So, for now it just seems like a smarter decision in terms of time and money and difficulty for developers to stick with DX11.

    Hi Steve! I've been wondering lately about pelter coolers. I recall these used widely for cooling early era CPUs like the Pentium II. I realize the heat production of the side opposite to the CPU contact would be bad for all other components inside a case but with so make many advance in cooling technology I'm surprised no one has made a new pelter based cooler that tackles the heating issue. Thanks for all the entertaining and insightful content you do. My wife got a kick out of the vacuum episode.

    Back in the 80's, and before I assume, Radio Shacks were a lot like that store in Japan. Back then I was into ham radios as well as computers and you could walk into any Radio Shack and buy pretty much any discrete component needed for a build and for the really esoteric stuff they would be happy to order if for you. I got the impression that they had been supported by people fixing their own TV's, radios and stereos in the tube days. Once PCB's and IC's became the rule in consumer electronics even if you had the know how to diagnose a fault and replace the bad component it simply wasn't worth the time and effort involved compared to buying a new whatever. So Radio Shack and most of the independent stores like it either went out of business or changed their business model.

    Is there a chance we could get a video on GPU vendors stances of replacing thermal paste, fitting an AIO (Kraken G12) etc, or general cleaning by opening up the card.
    Recently been trying to figure out what MSI's stance is on that and haven't managed to come to a concrete conclusion, some global MSI moderators are saying the GPU void sticker on the back of their cards is to deter people that don't know what they are doing and that MSI allows people to take apart their card and it only acts as an indication the cards has been taken apart and MSI investigates further if your card goes into RMA to see if the user inflicted the fault, at the same time they also ask people to directly contact MSI to make sure, so kinda conflicting arguments.
    On the other hand some people are saying it's only allowed in the States and it doesn't apply to the rest of the world, while others flat out say it will void the users warranty, while doing research on forums I end up seeing a lot of confusion and conflicting arguments as to which vendors let you self service your card while still retaining your warranty.

    • @Najvalsa
      @Najvalsa 6 років тому

      Zombiesfeelpain The void if removed sticker is straight up meaningless in the US by law, that much I know. I'm not sure about other regions but I think Europe and Oceania are in the same boat.
      The card vendors may not like it, but they can't refuse an RMA based on it.

    • @zombiefeelpain
      @zombiefeelpain 6 років тому

      Oh I completely forgot that whole situation changed recently in the US, I'm in the UK, currently waiting for MSI to respond to my ticket, nearly 3 days so far. .-.

    • @Najvalsa
      @Najvalsa 6 років тому

      Zombiesfeelpain Yeah, and the funny thing is, is that it was a law from the 70s it's just that only now people realised it. But since you're in the UK it's a different story. It'd be nice if GN clarified it.
      According to this though www.alphr.com/technology/1009030/warranty-void-if-removed-consumer-rights-nonsense the stickers aren't illegal like in the US, but you're still protected. "While this certainly sounds like great news for consumers, all of this only applies to the US. In the UK, things are slightly more complicated but, thanks to the EU, we’re reasonably well covered against faulty goods in or out of warranty. According to EU law, a manufacturer has to repair or replace a faulty good free of charge for a minimum of the first two years. If they can’t offer that, they need to give you a full or partial refund." But the amount of time varies depending on the category of goods, so reading around it seems that for most electronics it's five years.

    • @zombiefeelpain
      @zombiefeelpain 6 років тому

      SlavjanA Yeah I brought that up with Sony when my original ps4 died, they soon went quiet and replaced my PS4 😂 Any who, waiting for MSI is like waiting for paint to dry, hopefully they respond before the end of the decade, just want some official confirmation just to be on the safe side.
      Especially knowing my luck, I don't want to end up with a 1080Ti door stop.
      I've noticed this whole thing about voiding GPU warranties is like a minefield, the only brand I know of that have fully stated they don't mind is EVGA, it would be great if GN could do a definitive guide on the whole thing since they can probably get much faster responses than the average consumer.

    Hey I noticed that my R9 Fury (air cooled) had positive scaling (increased performance as evident by my firestrike gfx score) when undervolting (-50mV). This was also reported elsewhere on the internet and is reproducible. Keep in mind that the clock speeds did not throttle or increase as a result of thermal changes (remind stuck at 1050mhz). Question: how does this reduced voltage increase performance?
    Thanks!
