Back Country Camping at Frontenac Provincial Park: Lynch Lake and Birch Lake

  • In today's video I am trying out backcountry camping for the very first time.
I told myself that at 47 years old, it was time for another challenge, and I sure got one!
In the past I've put myself through things like a police services physical fitness test at 37 years old where I scored 75%
And twice I've climbed the CN Tower in 19 minutes and 22 minutes respectively.
For this challenge, I decided to try backcountry camping.
For my first time backcountry camping, I selected Frontenac Provincial Park as I figured it's a good beginner/intermediate level.
Join me on this adventure as I spend three days in the wilderness alone!
My first attempt at backcountry camping was a serious eye opener for me. I internationally picked the farthest site that was available and I made the decision to start and end my adventure from the farthest parking lot in the park.
On this adventure I hiked a total of 45.5kms and 63,500 steps over the course of three days.
Confident as I was, and still am, in my own physical fitness - this challenge really took me to the edges of my abilities.
The one thing that I had not considered in all of this was how it feels to weigh 255 lbs, when I’m used to being 190 lbs. The dead weight of my pack, at 65lbs seemed too much, and as a result I will be reassessing what I need and can do without on future excursions.
Frontenac Provincial Park was a beautiful location for this adventure and I really enjoyed my time specifically on Birch Lake, purchasing a waterproof map proved to be a great idea, since the majority of my 1st hike was in the rain.
The english novelist Samuel Butler said of exploring:
“Exploring is delightful to look forward to and back upon, but it is not comfortable at the time, unless it be of such an easy nature as not to deserve the name.”
I didn’t want this to be easy, and it wasn’t, but looking back on the experience I have a strong sense of accomplishment and I’m already planning for my next backcountry trip.

Never too late to try something new... I'm 50 and still skateboarding. Goal is to try stand up paddle boarding this summer. I surf and go kayaking, so I will assume I can learn it.
The back country camping looks fun. I didn't realize there are actual check-in / check-out times for campsites, or even that there are official 'campsites' in the wilderness trails. Did you experience "thunder boxes"? Apparently most Ontario back country camping has them on the trails.

Oh how I miss that scenery, the sounds, the serenity and the smells, it looks so beautiful there. I'm loving the time lapse. At 17:41 I want that picture on my wall along with a dozen other shots! Then you give us a waterfall, one of my all time favorite things in nature! Next time you venture out you need a travois for some of the items so you don't have to carry the weight, you just pull it. This is by far my favorite video and it might get worn out from being watched over and over.

62.5lbs!!! Yikes... my PCT pack is 10.84lbs.... not including food & water. Ex-military as well... you need to think about going ultralight (the only way to go doing more with less or having kit that has more than one purpose :) ) I Love wandering around Frontenac Park!

I truly enjoyed this. A great explore. Nice and relaxing. Yet taxing. Yeah you will have to find some way to decrease pack weight. But overall a great first attempt. Big Hugs from Alberta😊😊

Very nice of you to share your experience with us. Amazing to see such wilderness 4 hours _south_ of where I live.
The green of the forest at 15:37 and 37:05 was really nice.
Shooting star was recorded at 30:23 !!
How did you estimate the number of cans of cooking fuel you would need ?
Since safe storage containers are next to impossible to carry backpacking due to their size and weight, what precautions did you take to avoid bears being attracted to any food supplies you had ?

I greatly enjoyed your adventure! For the last two days I've been camping out in our backyard with my kids. I saw a tick crawling across my bedding the first night and wanted to call it quits. Long story, short....great job to the both of us for persevering! 😜
But seriously...looking forward to watching many more of these type of adventures!

Excellent shots of areas of Frontenac Provincial Park that I have not had the pleasure of seeing yet. Other than the rain at the beginning you could not have asked for better weather. Was wondering where all the steep climbs were until I hit approx the 31 minute mark. This is what I remember of Frontenac when I did the Slide Lake Loop with my brother. Keep the videos coming! Love this!!

    Hi Dave
WOW you should be proud of yourself on this hiking adventure. The scenery was absolutely
beautiful. The lake, the streams, the water falls all priceless. The fact that you went on this
adventure alone took a lot of nerve but you were successful. The weight factor was a big
issue. Next time take the bare necessities, I don’t think you really needed the hammock.
My hat is off to you Dave for going on this adventure alone and videoing every part of it so
we could go along with you. From breakfast time until the time you went to bed we didn’t
miss anything. Thank you for sharing this adventure you took us on. Stay safe and well.
I forgot to mention the rain hat, I loved it. You looked so cute wearing it. LOL

Thanks for your video. It takes a lot of guts to do something like that for the first time and to video tape it too!
My hunch is that the weight of your pack added to the stress of the hike. 65 lb is an obscene amount of weight, especially for a 2 night trip. If you can get it down to under 30 lb, I guarantee you will be able to walk farther and faster. You could then probably increase your speed from 2 km/hr to 3 km/hr. Good on you for doing the trip! I stumbled upon this video while looking for some inspiration for my own trip this coming weekend to the park.

@Freaktography ty, doing three nights with the kiddo this summer at site 6. Was going to bring one full size and one half size. Seen the fall video as well. I used friends of frontenac website to see what sites were more private. It's a good site for some info so you don't run into sites with no privacy.

It was very beautiful! And you did look like you had fun. The hubby and I do some backpacking ourselves and one thing I have learned is that I have more fun when the pack is lighter. Lighter gear is more expensive, so it might not be worth it to you if this was a one off. I suggest taking a look at ua-cam.com/video/BATobrOEK5Q/v-deo.html This one is older, but his channel is amazing. Keep up the great work!
