Respectfully bro, I couldn't disagree with you more about the way it looks. Quite the opposite. I actually think the Wave DX looks better than the other mics you compared it against. All of them. The way it looked was actually one of the reasons why I wanted it. For one, it doesn't need a foam cover, which tends to make those studio mics look dusty after a while. And two, it's small size helps it be out of the way in a shot, and it's black frame makes it even more stealthy. To each his own, but yeah man, I can't agree.
it makes sense now. if you look up best microphones on youtube typically neumann, telefuken and akg don't exist. bc they don't use rgb. tbh I totally agree with you. gear towards content creation should be simple, bugdet freindly and easy to understand. aswell as look good
Great review Ricky. And great price on this mic! Out of the 5 for the blind test, I chose #5 correctly because I have it and it's my favorite mic, and I owe that to you. Peace. Love. Music. 💜
That's the thing, since he never showed the unboxing. Elgato thought that might happen based on the design they went for. Elgato specifically labeled the mic where the user needs to talk to specifically when using the mic. So the idea of "thinking you should be talking to the side" is something people who owned condenser microphones would do IF they don't read/ignore simple guidelines of the manufacturer.
Good review as always. Btw is it weird that the sm7b sounded the worst to me during the blind test? Also would you be looking into the Logitec Blue Sona?
I've never heard a blind test and not thought the SM7B sounds the worst. It's just a bad sounding mic in general imo but can be easily EQ'd to fix it and looks good on camera.
Only a minute or two into this (and I don't know what you're going to say about it yet) but, having listened to you for a while now, I think this mic sounds good on your voice over the net, in my phones.
I actually like the way the mic sounds. Well, at least on your voice. I don't really like the mid-heavy microphones. This is a bit refreshing. Kudos to them for not copying the SM7B look and sound. Will it work? Who knows. For $100, it sounds pretty good to me. Good video.
The blind test reminded me just how good the SM57 truly sounds... Probably provided my favourite sound of them all! Definitely agree though that this Elgato DX just isn't a good looking microphone (and personally I don't think it sounds great either, having watched multiple videos and not really enjoying it on anyone's voice... Yours sounds a lot better than some though!). I just don't feel that there's a single microphone in the same price range that I'd choose this over.
Was waiting for this when I saw it announced, good stuff! Was mostly just curious to see how it slotted up in the price point, seems about what you'd expect. I guess I'm glad that elgato's xlr path of a dx and a wave xlr is... fine? for any people who naturally go down that route. Definitely agree with the confused identity, though. Do you think you'll ever tackle USB mixers, if you think you have anything to add to that space? Even an updated 'difference between audio hardware' style video would be welcome, I think. I kinda blindly got the wave xlr when it came out, and it's been great for my uses with a King Bee II, but I certainly didn't know like, interface-wise, how it differed or didn't from an audient evo. On the mixer end, no physical channel sliders like the goxlr is a bit of a miss but I got around that with the stream deck integration (which im sure elgato is thrilled about haha) Video looks great, too, by the way, really crisp!
Interesting microphone. Finding the line between gear for content creation and other uses are getting blurry. Until you mention that if this mic doesn't have an RGB. Then that distinction of aesthetics is clear.
Actually sounds great, but yeah I agree with the possibility of confusion on where to speak into. A friend of mine is a streamer, and I can already imagine him speaking into this thing from the side wondering why we can primarily only hear the squeaking of his ceiling fan over his voice
i will say that if you are doing an all elgato set up, it's not a bad choice. Audio Haze's voice sounds pretty good on all mics and at some points it was hard to tell the difference.
Is it just me or did the SM57 sound the best in the blind test? Did I only need a $100 microphone all this time? Have I way over spent on audio equipment? I think the answer may be yes.
I have this microphone and I love it, for order for this microphone to work well, you need to have it close to your face. You did not want a microphone that is to distracting. I'm sorry you feel that this microphone is not Gotti enough or cool enough where it pulls focus in your stream, you really should look at the product for what's it's intended for.
Review is great except for the part that it seems misleading saying that " You thought the mic was to be talked to/spoken to at the side " because of the design. Unboxing of the product shows that there is a label or a contraption that has a guide written to it saying that "that is the location where one is to speak towards the mic." Not defending Elgato but they did thought what you thought hence they placed that there as a precaution so that they can keep their design which makes the mic in a way unique in terms of shape.
Hi Ricky, Thanks for the video. You have a point about the design but, if you are into the Elgato ecosystem, the design fits in with other Elgato gear. I agree that the design is not for pro-audio people, but I have an Elgato low profile boom + Stream Deck + Stream Pedal and it does fit in with that look. And I am not a gamer, I do corporate training!
Hi! I have a problem with shure sm57, i bought focusrite solo 3-d generation and connected it with micro, but the sound is quite, if i put more gain I have a lot of noise, what i shall do in this situation
/ive been using it for the last couple of months it is good if it is all you have but it adds to much noise into my recordings i ended up replacing it with a SSL2
I dont think it looks that bad, but each to their own. In a streaming/youtube world people don't really care about how the mic looks, all they care about is does it sound nice? do you have a good camera, and is the stream quality good?
I mean, in the packaging there is like a ribbon around the mic saying "Talk into this end". So If ur talking into the side of the mic ur probably not so intelligent.
I definitely thought at first, "why is Ricky speaking into a wrong side of the microphone like an idiot?" 😂😂😂 (obviously I know he's not an idiot, just that the microphone's silly oh-i-wanna-pretend-i'm-a-condenser look is doing that lol)
Hey man! Excellent review! However i wish that you would have discussed the software that goes with this microphone as well. Other than that it was great!
As a gamer I just want to say that most people over the age of 12 dislike RGB on devices. I've passed on so many great products in the past because they have RBG. I absolutely despise gamer aesthetic and RGB. When I have to have it (like in a keyboard) I use a static color. -- The problem is that cheaper products with decent quality are marketed towards younger people who like gaudy aesthetics. It sucks.
To give you the opinion you asked for right out of the bat… yea, it’s ugly. I personally don’t think though, microphone looks are that important, even on stream. In the end, good looks can’t replace a good sound. And the Elgato Wave DX indeed sounds anemic. And given how many streamers don’t know and don’t want to know, how to use an EQ, this is a major flaw. Another major flaw is it’s insufficient decoupling from body borne noise at a form factor, that makes adding your own shock mount impossible. As for its low gain needs… The AKG D-5 needs 51.7dBV of gain. The Shure Beta 58a and Shure KSM8 need 51.5dBV of Gain. The Shure Beta 57a needs 51dBV of gain. The Sontronics Corona (what a name) needs 50dBV of gain. The Austrian Audio OD505 needs a measly 47dBV of gain. So… dynamic microphones with low gain needs aren’t exactly unheard of. Maybe in a form factor like this, though.
I personally don’t have an issue the the Corsair design language! I like it, it’s not about the orientation, shape, and yolk design. The Wave USB has a similar design language but doesn’t have the same awkward design decisions imo
I don't know how to feel about this mic it sounds good but I don't know how to feel about it because it looks like a condenser microphone and as a dynamic mic it isn't really that interesting
This is what I have noticed as well, but I do not have a talent to say it this nicely. To me it looks really stupid that EVERYONe has the SM7B, no one thinks, no one knows nothing about it, but everyone has it, well this is the only reason. Not to mention the RGB, or similar gimmicks... :) Idiot friendly is one thing, but made for stupid is another. Sorry for not being politically correct. :)
blind test mic 3 won me....great review though...although maybe you can move the intro ad forward if the video is over 10 minutes not to put new viewers off
@@AudioHaze not quite pacing but....after going through youtube and they all start with ads....one starting without it is a breath of fresh air and brings a whift of quality to 'brand'....yet the ad is still in there...can always run it early to capture high retention numbers
Visually I don't really think any of these microphones look all that good really the sm7 b for example is just a big black thing in people's faces for the most part I find it annoying to see most of the time
May I ask you what makes a mic visually appealing? For my fiancee she has an SM58 from colorware with a mint neck, black handle, and purple grille. It is a simple, familiar design with the splash of color that is visually appealing
I think it's actually pretty good looking, and not having to use a pop filter helps as well in this regard
To each their own! The pop filter is very very effective too :) better than the RE20s
yea, i like the clean look of it.
I think it’s a welcome change to the pretty much standard mic aesthetic that we are all so used to. Looks good IMO. Sounds good too. Great vid!
DUDE your video quality has improved 10 fold in the past year! The lighting of that room is extremely appealing and aesthetically pleasing.

Hahahaha true though, most people are basing these searches on what shows up on amazon
There are so many questionable sellers on Amazon by now, that I will not take the risk. It has become eBay 2.0
Great test. Somehow I dislike the tone of the SM7B here. RE20 is way ahead of the crowd, then the SM57, and the rest aren't my favourite.
Nice! I just think the SM7B doesn't do well on my voice personally, it shines more in other contexts :)
Great review Ricky. And great price on this mic! Out of the 5 for the blind test, I chose #5 correctly because I have it and it's my favorite mic, and I owe that to you. Peace. Love. Music. 💜
NICE! Enjoy it my friend, RE20 is killer :)
I thought the exact same thing when I first saw the mic. People will be talking into the sides of this thing 100%.
yeah :/ in terms of $100 dynamics though, not a bad performer!
That's the thing, since he never showed the unboxing. Elgato thought that might happen based on the design they went for. The sm57 still sounds great! But the RE 20 for the win.
Agreed!

Interesting microphone. Finding the line between gear for content creation and other uses are getting blurry. Until you mention that if this mic doesn't have an RGB. Then that distinction of aesthetics is clear.
Haha yeah some design tropes are very clear. Audio engineers want everything to look like a neumann, gamers want rgb lol
Why add grill marks to the side of the mic when only the top is capturing the audio. Creates more confusion imo.
Yeah I agree! Mentioned it near the end of the vid :)
Commented too soon i guess 😅
Day 1 of waiting for the SE Dynacaster review!

Why they don't fabric a dynamic microphone using the vertical position to capture the audio? The condenser look a like position it's kind of pretty.
That’s a cool idea!

Hey! I left a comment on the video, but just make a community post too to clarify, the competition is over

thinking on selling my shure mv7 and buying this mic but im not sure ?
