The SHUTTER SPEED mistake I see all beginners do...

  • Shutter speed is a funny thing, long exposures are even funnier, you either love them or hate them. In this video, I visit the largest waterfall in the Faroe Islands, Fossa, where I take a few different photos from the upper plateau. I also explain my approach to shutter speed, what mistake I always made when I began as a landscape photographer, and how I prefer my long exposures to be these days.

Now lol you both talk about using models or items, trees etc and leading lines to create interest draw the eye in. I've just recently subscribed and bought your Landscape Composition course, your videos and your course are very helpful! I am planning for a trip to Iceland early 2022 and some of your explanations in the course as well as your videos, such as this one, greatly helped me to be more aware of many things in my landscape photography that I haven't paid attention before. Thank you, Mads! 😊

What you call a mistake others might call personal preference - as with anything of this nature it's all subjective. I've personally used a wide variety of shutter speeds for water and found different speeds work better depending on the circumstances, I therefore disagree that a particular range of speeds is wrong or a mistake. It's like the classic example of asking for feedback on a photography forum, 50% will tell you one thing and 50% the complete opposite depending on preference.....

I was shooting waterfalls in Scotland recently and I was having to use different shutter speeds for different parts of the water but trying to change shutter speed but compensate by altering ISO and aperture to let the same amount of light through was a challenge. In some cases I would have had to crank the ISO up too high to get the texture I wanted on the main waterfall. I think the main thing I learnt from your video was I have to try not to play it so safe with height of my camera in the water. Yours seemed to be just on the edge of getting deluged! 😨😂

  • @mikni4069
    @mikni4069 2 роки тому +6

Fantastic composition, although a little nerve wrecking… I really love the one with you in, as it so dramatic and give a scale of the place…. And the different shutter speed is really coming to it right, way to often the main falls look way to calm, I like that yours give a sense of the drama of the place.

Love that centered composition, Mads ! In case of waterfalls, a certain shutter speed is personally, but I also prefer the shutter speed in which you still can see some details in the water. As fas as composition, it goes to show that there are no rules, just that you know about the rules. I really like your videos, full of tips, stories and, of course, beautiful photos. Keep up the good work !!!

I love this video. When I see the lengths you go to to capture a shot it really inspires me to do something other than stand in the most common place and shoot. While I might not stand in the middle of a fast flowing river with my camera at my feet (!) I am being inspired to think about composition in a different way. I guess that's what being a photographer is all about. Thank you as always Mads.

Great video and advice. The going not for the faint-hearted! I agree with Nigel that the orange jacket adds a 'pop'. Only thing about combining a fast shutter for the big fall in the background with a slow shutter for the cataract in the foreground is that anyone used to doing these shots will see that there is a conflict going on between foreground and background. The two don't gel.

I very much liked the shot with Nigel up at the top, only to be outdone by the striking image with YOU as the subject.....;-). I'm not a fan at all of the smoothed out water effect as I haven't seen water like that in nature since a really bad bender in college. It's just not natural and my personal belief is it is the most overdone effect in recent years of photography. Water is dynamic and unless nature freezes it, I won't either. Great seeing both of you in the video. When traveling is easier across the pond I'd like to join you guys for a workshop one day. Thanks for risking life and limb for these great shots!

Great to see from yourself the impact that variable shutter speed makes to higher energy scenes like this... P.S. Good job, really nice pictures. The contrast from colored clothes is usually good, but this time I thought that the picture of you in darker clothes created a very good feeling. Once again, well done. All the best from north Sweden.

Great to see you two guys together on a workshop again and stunning waterfall shots Mads. As a relative beginner and someone who does not yet use LR or PS using different shutter speeds, focus stacking, exposure blending etc etc are all things I would love to experiment with but that’s for the not too distant future. It’s obvious from this Vlog the advantages of being able to do so with the images you have produced. On a recent trip to Iceland I just played with taking multiple shots of waterfalls at different shutter speeds to compare the results, it was a great learning curve. The ability to combine them in the same shot is very appealing 🤔 You win the model comp obviously, it’s your Vlog 😉 Look forward to Nigels

Amazing job Mads. I was there 2 years ago and Fossa was the first waterfall I shot. Awesome place. I'll come back. Congrats!

Mads love the shot with Nigel in it. Yes the shot with yourself is colder but for me the red jacket just works.

How did your tripod not fall? Jeez. I would be freaking out and holding it and taking the pics! Great video. New subscriber too!

When shooting running or falling water, 1/60 s gives you the most authentic impression of the water. To 'calm' the water, 1/4 s is a good choice, but if you want to capture reflexion on the water, 2 to 4 s will give you a great result. It also makes raindrops vanish from the water surface. Many Anglo-American landscape photographers, both professionals and enthusiasts, tend for long time exposure, which will kill the character of nature and create an unreal image.

I wouldn't quite phrase it so definitively, buy I have to say I agree about long exposures. Those flows of water just look weird.

The black and white conversion of I think it was the third shot was really great and unfortunately the orange jacket with that powerful waterfall🏆 but you guys are both winners lol great vid.

It's not a mistake if the photographer planned for their photo to look that way. I've been doing photography for over 40+ years, I have some that are done at 1/4 or 1/3 of a second and I have some that are done at 30 seconds and even several minutes. It all depends on what effect "I" want for my photograph. To say it's a mistake is false, it's your "Opinion", not fact. I could say that it's a beginners mistake taking a picture with yourself in the picture as well, as I don't like having people in my landscape pictures, but, that's my opinion. You do you.

Definitely going the extra mile to capture that angle with those waterfall shots Mads.
Glad you and your gear didn’t get washed over the edge.
B/W certainly adds great impact to these images.
    Thanks for sharing again Mads.
    Stay safe 🇦🇺

The orange jacket wins because it is framed against an almost black & white photo which provides a fabulous contrast. The contrasts that many photographers use Photoshop to get, except this one existed in reality!!! Anyone that can't recognize how good that is, is doomed for failure. No matter how good most of their suggestions are.
