I liked this song the first time I heard it, but after reading the chapter in his book about how he lost his father the song takes on a complety new meaning. This is a beautiful song. Love his autobiography, love his music, and love his outlook on life. I'm only 17 and I honestly had never heard of him until about a year ago, but I'm proud to say Jimmy Buffett is my role model. I'm a parrotthead for life!
Jimmy's Dad was two months and two days older than mine. His wind went away in January 1980 just nine days before his 58th birthday. He was Army not Navy, but this song honors all fathers who love their families. I play this for my father every year on his birthday and on Father's Day. Thank you Jimmy for a beautiful song so lovingly sung. I've been listening to you since Come Monday and will continue until my wind falters and wanes. Love you Jimmy. Love you Dad.
Great comment my dad was a cowboy and he also grew up through the depression though he didn’t know the sea he knew his children he had a great lifetime relationship with my mother he taught us respect kindness and decency I feel the same way about mountains as jimmy does about the sea the family tradition of enduring echoes are heard in the deep canyons of Idaho I still catch a glimpse of the old man every time I go to the hills may we all be able to hear them as we think of lives well spent
Oh my heavens! This song! I keep finding more and more from Jimmy. Just when I think his passing will stop hurting, haunting harmonies come forward from yet another piece of work he poured himself and his story into for the people he loved so much. I've never grieved the loss of a person I didn't know more than these past few two months.
People tend to think that Jimmy Buffett is a silly man who makes silly songs about alcohol and vactioning, but he is clearly just as capable of serious country ballads like this. And people tend to have a similar misconception about country music as well...
The wind went away in 2010. Lost my dad to ALS. He lived his final years as the bravest soul I ever knew. Never complained, never pitied himself. Dad was a diesel submarine sailor for twenty years. My brothers and I were fortunate to grow up as navy brats. Stationed in Key West Florida as Jimmy was planting his early roots. Key West was paradise in the early 70s. The fondest memories I have are from there and there are so many of Jimmy's songs that take me back to those days. A brilliant songwriter that touches the soul of people who especially love the ocean! Thanks Jimmy for writing songs that keep that spirit of the wind on the ocean alive and well!
This is the story of our fathers that worked day and night to make sure we were secured and taught us how to battle for ourselves when we become responsible for ourselves. The lyrics are very very deep and the melody is breathtaking! I think this is the best of Jimmy Buffet's repertoire and also maybe the best in the folk songs series! Jimmy, you are alive through this song!
@Johnny Utah, I love his ballads so much more too. Funny, I taught high school one year before becoming a nurse. I taught about poetry in a remedial reading class and we played Jimmy Buffetts music to learn about poetry and ballads. Hopefully they learned a few new words they were not familiar with as well. Now I am teaching the same to my 10 year old❤.
People know Jimmy for Margaritaville but he is really a wonderful songwriter. This song about his dad always makes me cry. Beautiful song. Easy to relate to for anyone who has lost someone who loved life on the water.
This absolutely knocked me right outta the saddle. My Dad is disappearing right before my eyes as I become "Hey friend!" or " Did you have any problem finding the place?! (My home of 20 years); time travel is possible but the cost is rowing through a class V hurricane in a row boat. Thanks Jimmy, while I mourn your loss I appreciate the company on the travail; Far winds and following seas to your free spirit and may we cross courses within hailing distance someday.
Jimmy is great with the party tunes. Unfortunately the boomers appear hell bent on making that his legacy. I'm gen X. I love his more introspective songs. He's had them throughout his career. It's my Job, West Nashville Grand Ball Room Gown, Migration, Somewhere over China, If I Could Just Get it on Paper, Cowboy in the Jungle...and so many more.....
I'm a very big Jimmy fan, was raised on him, saw him back on this tour when I was only 6 years old. This song takes me back to my childhood everytime... Very emotional song for me, one of his best.
Agreed. This was my first Jimmy Buffett album, when I was REALLY young; my dad got me hooked on his music. 24 currently, and this album remains one of my favorites. Not knowing the full story of this song until I saw libertydefender's comment, I now have a new respect for "False Echoes". I think I'm gonna call up my dad and tell him how much I appreciate him...probably mom too :P
Just might be my favorite Buffett song. And I have dozens. Mostly from the 70s. A song full of love for his dad. Makes me think of my dad, who I'll miss every day the rest of my life. Also, beautiful harmonica by Fingers Taylor, suffering from Alzheimer's himself as I type this.
It's on my bucket list to see both Jimmy Buffett AND James Taylor....singing this song together would be more than a gift! I LOVE this haunting, beautiful sea ballad....lovely words and melody! Sail on....see you at port....xoxo
I have been trying to re-acquire this song for years, but I could not conjure up enough of it to find it. I thought it had "Havana" in the title. So, today I'm reading a Louis L'Amour book. The main character is Echo Sackett. Suddenly it came to me!! Like finding a beloved old friend. Chugger Smith is right. It ain't all cheeseburgers.
Jeez, Chris, I am so sorry. Lost my dad in 2012 also and now dealing with mom's Alzheimer's. Song really hits home, beautiful. I miss you too Dad, every damn day!
November 21st 2011 the wind went away for my fathers long battle with cancer. He was a true sailor, a fighter for his country, and a man whom taught his girls to survive. Miss you Dad. Forever chasing the sun, my father, my hero.
2018 now... I still miss my Grandfather (Merchant Marine WW2) and my dad (US Navy 1976-1996) is still charting his course... I'm proud of both... And proud to be a "Son of a Son of a Sailor".
April 1, 2005 he dodged German Submarines and survived a direct hit on his ship by a V-1 (dud) helped build components for the space program. Some of his work still sails on in the engine rooms of the United States Navy. Fair Winds Grandpa... My father has his own course.... Gulf War, Somalia, and a few he's not allowed to talk about. He's still charting it. May he do so for a few more decades.
Great song greater message not all of us were blessed with perfectly imperfect fathers not a day goes by that I don’t think of my father and our differences and our similarities i miss him and his understanding maybe my kids might think of me someday this way they sure were raised on j b and the older they get the more they like his ballads life is interesting death is really tough to come to grips with we are left with memories and judgements and how we fit into the picture is ultimately our state of mind I’m glad I’ve got Buffetts music to help me though the morass it’s saved me a ton on therapy hope it’s worked for all of you too
Jimmy is so much better when he isn't pandering to the yacht rock crowd. Been a fan of his since the early 80s. While I appreciate his party toons, i've never really cared for them. I'll take his more introspective songs 10 out of 10 times.
xpatriatedtexan you certainly speak the truth the partying parrot heads mostly don’t get it but you have to appreciate the fact that his fame has brought us songs like this one . When you really get to the base or foundation of jimmy he pulled himself up out of the blew out flip flop to recognize that we all need family home and great memories to be truly happy and content .
ive been a parrothead since i was 8 my uncle amd my mom got me into this from that day on i have been to margaritaville in key west and will not listen to rap only country and jimmy

People who think that live in a tiny world, with tiny brains. Jimmy Buffett was around for many decades. Ignorance is a disease that is self-imposed.

one of the best...people need to go deeper into his albums and realize he just doesn't have the classic hits
Absolutely. I always tell people it ain't all Cheeseburgers. At this stage in my life, I prefer to listen to his ballads.
totally true!
We dig deeper after the classics wear off. But man, that's going to take some time in this case.

True. A hidden gem of a song.

People think of Buffet for Cheeseburgers and Margaritas, so so so much more. These hold to your heart. Truly a lyrical genius
People definitely sleep on some of his best songs. Bob Dylan said Buffett was one of his favorite musicians.
@@andyheintz3593 No he didn't say that. He said he was a great song-writer. Jimmy was not a great musician. At all.

Lost my breeze in 1980. Foundered for a bit until 1983. Wind picked up and I sailed with her ever since.
Read once that JB would not perform this in concert because he wouldn't be able to get thru it - I can hear why. RIP Dad, miss you!
chugger smith necro reply, but it's would also NEVER be the same without James Taylor backing him. Godspeed friend.
Not true. I saw him do it many times.
one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard
you need to hear more music!

Yeah, we were lucky enough to have dads that we loved. Not so for some people...
Yes, I hear that all too often. My dad could piss me off at times, but in the end I realized he was always had my back. Best to you!
This song really speaks to all our passed-on fathers.
