- Digitech Whammy Pedal Review
Welcome to my review of the Digitech Whammy pedal! This pedal is really out of this world. You can not only emulate a whammy bar both with the dip sound as well as with a dive bomb, but you can also harmonize, detune, raise octaves and lower octaves. It is an effect that really extends your musical palate and pushes your guitar to the end of the world. The whammy pedal is a total must buy if you have any inkling of liking the sounds coming out of this beast. I hope you enjoyed my Digitech Whammy pedal review I had a blast talking about this awesome piece of gear.
Dude, is a unique metal bad ass. Refreshing beyond any pedal demo. I loved this video. Well done! You know me and my son are sold he loves the detuned. I like the other features. Cool sounds. I like trippy effects.
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it. The detune effect rocks.
Man this is def going on my personal gift to self list 🤣🤣
Great video!
Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed the video. This pedal is totally worth the money. Definitely my favorite effect.
i get interested in this digitech whammy by Buckethead and Tom Morello. thanks for the demo
Thank you, they are both great whammy players! Good to see you're interested in this pedal.
I'm saving up for this pedal because I'm a huge White Stripes fan, can't wait!
Nice, it'll do white stripes very well!
As soon as I saw the Magma vinyl hanging up, I knew you knew what was up. Good luck with your channel (:
Thank you, Gojira F'n rocks man!
Awesome pedal. Have a wonderful day.
Thank you, you have a great day as well. Sorry it took so long to get back to you, UA-cam marked your comment as spam, I had to go in and approve it today.
Have the exact same brand definitely one to put in your pedalboard when doing RATM covers Tom Morello is a genius on the guitar and this pedal is also one to get when soloing other artists songs
I hear ya man, this is totally an essential pedal for covering Morello.
@@DustinAlford I just ordered one of these used, can't wait to try Becoming by Pantera!
Great review!!
Great playing!!
Thank you!
Cool demo!
Cool demo! 🎸🔥
Thank you glad you liked it.
Forget Elon, we've got the Digitech Whammy here today to throw us into cosmic orbit! What do you think of this majestic pedal? Good or too good? Lol.
just a tip, it would be really helpful to show what effect you have currently selected when you play with each of the different settings!
Thank you
i can see what hes doing
Dude I love you guitar edition jim root I hope to get that guitar
It's awesome man, I hope you get one someday. I bought mine used off of ebay.
Nice! What are you playing through other than the pedal? You got a killer sound man! Also what whammy version is this?
Thank you, in this video it's a Mesa Boogie F100 and I think a TS9 Tubescreamer, I'm not too sure though. It's the Whammy IV.
@@DustinAlford awesome thanks!
Morello actually uses the WH-1 which is now virtually impossible to get unless you want to pay $700 + on Reverb. But to be honest the IV (used here in the video) is so damn close in tone I don't think you or the audience will notice the difference. The WH-5 version though? Meh.
I guess my only question is. Does it have a wag function? Been looking at the XP100 because of its versatility. I’m new to the pedal game sorry if this is a dumb question.
Sorry I'm not exactly sire what a wag function is. Can you explain it in a bit more detail?
@@DustinAlford I think they meant wah
@@metalmaiden Thank you for clarifying. No this doesn't have a wah feature.
Would you be able to do a comparison between 4 and 5? Most of the demos barely touch distortion and even then it's like tubescreamer into clean amp. This is what I'm interested in.
Good to hear, I loooove distorted whammy. I'll definitely consider doing a comparison video. The biggest difference other the new effects is that the new one has tighter tracking. I like the old tracking a bit better though because it has more of that old school Dimebag sound to it.
@@DustinAlford That's the impression I got too, but without someone playing "the right stuff" it's difficult to be sure how much it really differs :) Thanks!
Huh so this is the Dimebag Darrel effect
Yeah he used this pedal a ton!
You’ll hear it a lot on Suicide note Pt2
the intro to revolution is my name made me want to get one
DigiTech should send Dime's family and Tom Morello a royalty Everytime one is sold
Yeah. Someone’s late to the party 😂
I’m trying to emulate the harmony effect heard in “Bent” by Matchbox Twenty at 2:20 and 3:45. What setting on here do you think would accomplish that? Thanks!
That's a hard one. It sounds like you can pull off that noise with a fuzz and a whammy, a octave fuzz, or a pog pedal. I'm not 100 percent sure what he uses on that track.
Sweet amp, I have one. Love it
Rock on!
I'm good friends with the man responsible for this pedal. He's a former D.O.D engineer, was with Digitech for years
Awesome! He made one of the greatest pedals ever. I'm sure he's an interesting guy. I love the way engineers think.
@DustinAlford He's a super cool guy. One of the interesting stories was when they released the 20th anniversary chrome Whammy, there was a debate on who to give the first one to. Morello or Vai? Who did more with it early on?
@@artofthomasestrada4011 Early on would have to be Vai but who mastered it and made it a staple for many players? Morello, easily!
@devinsinderwitcz9134 Yeah, I can see your point. I believe it did, in fact, come down to Vai being the earlier of the pair, with his work on the 1990 Passion and Warfare album.
Hello--what is the song that plays at the end of the video? It is an original song or another band?
That was an original song, it sadly got scrapped though for my last album because of technical issues.
Muse is the reason I’m going to be getting a whammy pedal, for songs like Fury, New Born, Invincible, MK Ultra, Defector and Sunburn.
They've got some great parts in their songs. Best of luck!
If anyone likes riffs with this pedal, check out the band Vein. Check out these songs: Ideation: Self Destruct, Heritic+ (especially the riff at 2:05), and End Eternal.
Thanks for the suggestions. There's nothing better then some heavy whammy riffs.
Dustin whats the best pedal in your opinion for beginner with multiple sounds
honestly just a standard cry baby wah is perfect for beginners , it was my first ever pedal and once u get the hang of using it you can do so much it it, alot of fun, or id say just a distortion pedal, overdrive will do alot for your sound
Sick video idea: use this pedal while using the actual whammy bar. Pull the bar up and make the pitch go flat and vise versa
That is a great idea. It'd take some practice.
2:18 Start
Thanks that will help a lot of people out there.
@@DustinAlford Leaves the option for those of us scanning for pedals. Plus it get's right to the good. Awesome work!
@@spartan8390 Thank you, I know the feels that's why I set up my reviews in two separated segments. Whenever I want to hear a pedal I just want straight up playing. Later on I'll usually go back and listen to the talking sections.
@@DustinAlford Same here.
What tuning were u playing in? Drop b or c?
C Standard
The “Jack white under Blackpool lights” pedal
guys what pedal does herman li use to get the octave up? and can i use this for it? :D
He uses this exact pedal for his pitch shifting.
An FX pedal. Pretty cool!
Thanks. Glad you liked it.
Jack white makes me want one.
Ha ha, he's the man. The whammy will get you some Jack White vibes.
I believe the beats per minute for the song is the same as welcome to bucketheadland i could be wrong
You're probably right I'm just not quite sure where in the video you are referencing. I do know Bucket Head is a huge whammy pedal guy.
That Tele 🥵
Is this pedal able to controll midi?
I'm not 100 percent sure but there is a midi in on this pedal. As far as I know it can read midi, I'm not sure about using the pedal itself as a controller.
Can the same effect from korns bbk be made on this?
Yeah it can, I just checked the song out, it all sounds possible using a standard whammy pedal.
@@DustinAlford awesome thank you so much i know they used the whammy wah version i just didnt know if it was possible with this version of it thank you again!
@@Sydicate Anytime man 👍
No you can’t play BBK exactly the way Korn doing it cause when the whammy 4 is full heel down, the pitch is still a little bit higher if you know what i mean
@@uli7084 I ended up just buying the actual XP-100 after all and do not regret it
Wonder how this compares to the Whammy DT
I actually made a video comparing the two. ua-cam.com/video/JZUJoTRJNw0/v-deo.html
@@DustinAlford time to check it out. Thanks!
Whammy 5 is so much better than the 4. I can’t believe anyone would say otherwise. Out of all the iterations of this pedal (I’ve owned 4 if you include the bass whammy) the 4 was hands down the worst imo.
Good to hear you have found a Whammy pedal you like.
@@DustinAlford what is the classic mode in whammy 5, which is not in whammy dt?
Can this be used for vocals?
It sure can!
I have the whammy II, Whammy IV, whammy dt and whammy V. (yes I know, I have too much shit). The Whammy IV sounds the best, in my opinion.
Awesome, I'd love to try out all the older ones. The IV has a good charm to it.
@@DustinAlford I haven't played on the original so I can't speak on that. The WHII on one hand is cool because it has the footswitch to cycle through settings and program, it has a "dry" out for if you want to use a tuner and it's just cool because it's the oddball black colored one, but it has a slightly annoying "hiss" to it and is not true bypass.
I also cannot speak on the XP-100 (which could be considered the Whammy 3rd generation). it looks pretty cool though.
If your wife doesn’t hate you now she will after this purchase!!
Anyone know which version this pedal is?
This is the DigiTech Whammy IV model.
Joaquin Phoenix here guys
Ha ha don't make me get my Joker makeup on lol.
Is that a Jim Root tele?
Yes it is, good eye.
@@DustinAlford gorgeous bro!!
Who really really want to hear it used right you guys in The Rage Against the Machine and Pantera I love that Pantera song the name of the song the chorus he says, I'm born again with snakes eyes becoming God's size. I can feel what he was using this time I thought he was running a power drill up against the guitar. And there's a Van Halen song or I'm not sure what he's using but you can use the whammy bar for a good amount of it actually it might be using the way me really pound cake that's the name of it. It's a great van Hagar tune really great. But yeah Rage Against the Machine there guy and of course Audioslave old time there he really really knows how to use one of these whammys to the perfect extreme he's been so much time playing guitar and playing at puddle he's messed like no one else but I'm back they're all season Floyd Rose whammy bar and use the whammy pedal at the same time I had the damage plan type book and thank God I had that I would a lot of stuff on UA-cam but you're not going to learn Spanish playing stuff off UA-cam too easy it showed all sorts of his solo parts and it showed where he's using the Miami bar and it showed abbreviations and marks and stuff for the way me pedal and it differentiated which you would use this way in that way the best most scientifically well done accurate tab books of all time damage plan. Remember when it came out I grabbed the CD in the table right away I loved it and I couldn't believe when Dimebag was killed just short time later on the first freaking shows a day in Ohio I couldn't believe it insane evil bastard killed Dimebag for nothing.
I hear ya, RIP DIME
Do you know what a plethora is? [edit after watching] Why yes, he does!
Oh yes, El Guapo...he has a plethora.
Don't forget about gojira
Oh yeah man, some of my favorite Gojira parts are with the whammy. They rule!
Ah yes, what modern Metalcore bands use
Thst guitar tone is so bad. What were you thinking?
Thanks man. I take it you mean bad as in good, the same way Michael Jackson used the word bad. You're a a BAD dude man! Take care.
It's still expensive
Ha ha I'm not gonna deny that. The new one is even more crazy expensive too.
Finally someone admits it
But can it THALL???
yes!
yawn
Goodnight sleep tight!
So it's pretty much useless unless you want to make random, generic video game noises
It depends on your genre, it's not for everyone.
Used by Vai, Satriani, Perry, plus many others, definitely not useless
That’s the point
