They over promised and under performed. When they announced the opening the investigation, everyone looked forward to a "Byron de la Beckwith" result of Carolyn Bryant doing the perp walk into prison.
When all along, all the FBI had was the possibility of a charge of lying to a federal agent. And they ain't no judge gonna put an 87 year old woman in jail for lying to federal agent.

In the 2004 FBI investigation, Carolyn testified to agents that Emmett physically and sexually assaulted her in the store. In 2007, she told Timothy Tyson that was not true.

Growing up and being the target of racism that I didn’t quite understand at a very young age and then reaching adult hood and learning about the atrocities people who share my skin tone had to go through really infuriated me and probably always will.
My grand-mother was born in one of the most racist towns in the south and it was a great many years later that I found that out. My grandmother never spoke ill of white people or anyone for that matter. In fact, no one in my family utilized racial slurs or derogatory terms to describe those different from ourselves.
It wasn’t until after her death when my family and I moved to a predominately white town, that I became from that moment on *very* familiar with it. This is why schools should add stories like this to their curriculum and not hide it. The only way to stop the ignorance is not hiding it and sweeping it under the rug. Expose it for what it is and then work on correcting it.

My Great Grandmother survived an Era VERY similar to yours and it also blew my mind she lived harboring no obvious anger for whites. I am 31, the destruction of that beautiful boy was well before my time and even i can see he did nothing wrong. However like many people i am a God fearing Christian and i know God knows, she can die without saying a word, she can confess and recant a thousand times but he knows that her actions caused the death of a child, an innocent, whose only crime was according to her the colour of his skin, regardless of what colour skin he had he was a child, how a grown woman who has kids of her own can live with herself is beyond me. The FBI could not investigate the Emmett Till state charge of "abduction" as a Federal kidnapping because they did not cross state lines.

@@gurnblanston3210 She may not have killed him physically but she started the whole mess! She knew her husband and his moods so I’m sure she knew how he would have reacted to situations. She already had two children with the guy! You know your own husband by then! My point regardless is even If he had heard gossip from others, all she had to say was it’s not true and nothing happened! She seemed to like all the attention! But in meantime a young boy was killed! My God if I knew my husband had a temper ( like she claimed). Then I would have told him that the boy didn’t do anything! We all are human and make mistakes in life but it’s up to each and every one of us to make the right decision! She obviously made the wrong one!

If she never identified him to her husband then why would she testify and tell the court all the things that he “supposedly did” If you were in her shoes would you go to court and testify against him like she did?
