Over a decade and I still can't think of another piece of music with an intro that evokes this particular emotion. It's hard to even sum up in one word. Panic comes close. It feels like being in a scene where the hero's mind races with memories of his life and loved ones, and he gets up for one more round. The music and visuals match each-other perfectly.

This is a really interesting take on an abuser. On one hand it shows him as a violent, insecure, toxic individual who should be avoided at all costs.
However, it also allows you to empathize with him. It shows how miserable he really is, and how this isolates him, turning into a self-fulfilling prophecy of misery, loneliness and insecurity.

I actually like the album version better where it ends with the outro and it just fades out with the acoustic guitar without the chorus playing again. Because i feel "how could you do this to her?" is the ultimate conclusion to the song.

I've rewatched this so many times to try and piece everything together and come up with some theory for the video. This is strictly just my opinion and is completely open for judgment or feedback or even just correction.
Yes, unfortunately the overall video is about how the BF killed his GF because of his over possession and extreme jealousy. But I believe he actually does die in the end. The entire video is him reliving every dark memory to where his GF was completely innocent but he would lash out at every guy that even looked her way too long. The first argument was in the apartment. Where just because a guy outside was on his phone and happened to be looking toward the building, while she had her phone in hand, that she was obviously talking to him , so thats where the final day began.
After that they decided to take a trip to the boardwalk to forget what happened and enjoy themselves. But every time she would be involved in something involving a guy, he would immediately take offense and lash out. This continues the more they go down the boardwalk, and he's getting more angry. So they find the nearest bar to grab a drink and dance.
As the night goes on and they have their drinks, they're loving it up and enjoying the music and most importantly each other. So even though she's paying no mind to anyone but him, his sick mind can't help but look to see if any guys are looking at her. Even though the guy had his own gf with him, he still convinced himself that he was checking her out. The vision we see of him by himself is his inner self that is his pure jealous. It's trying to enjoy itself, even though it's "alone" on the dance floor. But it still finds itself looking for problems, which is why that face resembles pure rage. He starts a fight with this kid and she as a concerned GF was probably trying to pull him off the kid.
Taking this rage back to the apartment, they would have their final fight about why she was trying to save this kid and not let him beat the crap out of him for looking at her. In a blind panic of what he's just done, (Which is why we catch a glimpse of him in black and white, scaredily looking over the railing), he runs from the apartment and just keeps running and running, while everything is slowly catching up to him. Everything that happened throughout the day that led to what he had just done......
And in the end.... He couldn't live with himself...... Him crying to her is him begging for her forgiveness..... And the 5 guys on the beach are supposed to represent the demons he now has to face that are coming for him. Hence him knealing in the sand, and knealing in the street with the car driving straight towards him. Yes, we do not know for sure if he lives or dies. But I want to personally believe that he let himself go because he knew he would not be able to carry that burden for the rest of his life. He killed the love of his life because of demons he could no longer control. And him finally stopping running, and knealing in front of the car, is the end for him.

ok, no doubt in my mind this IS the best music video I have ever seen. Never has any other video made me question and analyse the lyrics over and over again. Trying to make out what's the story, all I get are theories. The guy delivered the character spotlessly; I can't decide what's up with him. I hope to God Pendulum is back, and they do more videos of this kind (or better yet, a followup to this :D )
I know it's been 5 years but the gist of the story is he killed his partner and is mentally blaming everyone else around him by imagining she's still alive and cheating on him with other men. Although he imagines her cheating he wants to shove the blame on the random dudes, because deep down he knows he's the villain and wants to apologize for how he acted to her. Obviously this never happens, so he spends day and night looking for her to say sorry, facing his guilt over and over. Quite the story and video indeed!

Flat out reading the lyrics helps a lot honestly, even if you know them by heart.

@@averageaf4321 See that almost fits, but the sketchy dudes and the way she's laid out on the couch with no signs of injury makes me think of drug overdose not murder. That he got her into drugs and the party lifestyle, didn't stop her before it went too far despite trying and failing, and he blames himself for it. The final scene is him beating the dealer who sold it to her, as a life for a life
I read in the comments many different theories of what the video is about, and i wanted to share mine as well. Here's what i believe: The guy's girlfriend somehow died and he really wasn't ready to accept it, so he starts losing it completely. Wherever he goes, he keeps remembering the times he was there with her, and replaces reality with those memories, though at some points he snaps out of it and realizes he was just imagining (His girl isn't really there). When he dances alone at the bar, again he is imagining dancing with his girlfriend, and another guy with his girlfriend make fun of him (1:58). At 2:17, he stops seeing his girl for a sec, and starts looking for her. Then he sees the couple who were making fun of him, and he thinks the blonde girl is his girlfriend, when she's actually the other guy's girl, not his (compare the girl at 1:57 with that at 2:17). They start kissing at that point, and the guy gets so mad he starts hitting him (thinking he was kissing with his girl) The next morning he's running on the beach and again he thinks he sees his girlfriend. Being so broken, he kneels right next to her, when she suddenly disappears. There strikes reality, when some thugs appear, probably friends with the guy he beat up last night, asking for revenge. They actually beat him so hard he fell into a coma (3:24). There are some parts i still dont understand, i get confused at some points when the past and the future get mixed up, i cant put everything into an order. Well there's no way we can know exactly what was in the mind of the makers of the video, and i believe they made it so undefined so everyone would have his own way of understanding this story, depending on our personal experiences.
