The thing I notice the most about Nigel is how often he softens when questioned. The tone of voice goes down, he speaks a little more slowly. Once he knows he's got their engagement he immediately lowers the energy. It's brilliant.
l once stopped a game of 15 year olds and told the spectators that if l heard anymore swearing at the players if they stop it ill suspend the game l did 4 mins later l took all the players off
in all the 51years i've watched Rugby, i've only ever seen a player take a dive, when no foul was committed, 3 times, plus one player falling over when a slight push with open hand, happened, to make it look worse than it was. that, and 2 others, were when Nigel was reffing, and he dealt with them all. the other was ignored. they all happened fairly recently.
Remember when Nigel refereed for Wales that one tournament? This shows how fair and amazing he is as a match official
He is the only one that has been allowed to do that until now
The guy at 9:35 I'm sure nigel does genuinely admire. Sergio Parisse has to be one of the two greatest Italian internationals of any age.
The best thing a ref said to us was, _ Don't tell me the Laws, you don't know them, I don't know them, nobody knows them, let's play"
160 odd years of rugby history and I don't think there has been anyone more respected in the game, player or official.
Nigel is one of those wonderful examples in the public sphere that shows the two sides of respect. As has been mentioned often on your channel and in the comments, players are brought up to respect the referees in rugby, which in my opinion should be the default for everyone everywhere. We should respect others automatically. That respect can be lost and often quite easily.
The other side is earning respect. Nigel has built up that respect over years of doing the right thing to the best of his ability, and being clear about it. This respect is far far harder to lose. The players know who he is and even though for most of them the respect is ingrained, Nigel gets extra credit.
Charismatic, commanding, clear and concise
Mr Owens was the master of player management and the application of the laws.

The stadium in question is Scotstoun. Home for Glasgow Warriors. Some of the stands roll back as there’s a running track underneath and the stadium is used for track and field events. If ticket sales are slow they reduce the capacity of the ground. If a big game like the 1872 cup then they go for full capacity.
You should try and score an interview with Nigel. He also has his own channel that’s worth having a look at.

The big difference I’ve seen between rugby and soccer referees is that the rugby refs take the time to call the captains in and explain what foul occurred, and what the outcome is. I’m often completely lost in soccer as to why the whistle was blown (which also helps those players who take dives).
I think 2 things play part in this: the fact that football (soccer) referees are not mic'd up and the clock never stops during the game. If the clock stopped and everyone in the stadium could hear the referees and the players talking, lots of players would think twice about how much they complain. Also, about dives, sometimes the player could be controlling his fall to avoid getting injured, instead of trying to imply he was injured by the other player, and also they can get hurt by themselves (not resulting from a foul, but a sprain or something internal that seems like nothing for us watching, but it still hurts and no one is at fault and it's just bad luck)
I referee and play a sport where we usually play several games per day at a tournament (like in 5-a-side, I guess). At a pre-season competition a newly qualified referee was taking a game I played in and she didn't have her cards yet so I let her borrow mine.
Let me tell you that getting sent to the sin bin with your own cards feels very wrong, even if I did 100% deserve it.

After a silly captains challenge last night a NRL ref said to the captain "Kevin, did you see what we just saw then? Come on, be fair dinkum mate."
The two changes I would LOVE to see in Football refereeing to reflect Rugby values more (within reason, that I think is somewhat practical) would be:
1. Captains taking more responsibility, if individual players are being tossers, referrees being able to speak to their captain and say "have a word with your man, if he keeps this up he's going to get in trouble". The captain in Football seems like an almost arbitrary armband, where as in Rugby they are the head and the mouthpeice for the team.
2. In relation to your "even rugby players are premadonas", yes. The difference being that in Rugby, when the camera shows that there was incredibly minimal contact and the player was making a meal of it, they get spoken to and typically dont get rewarded with a penalty. In football, DESPITE IT BEING A CONTACT SPORT, the slightest bit of contact seems to be deemed a foul under a VAR review if you throw yourself to the ground dramatically enough. I think you should either be able to say "yes there was contact but it's not a foul", or be able to give the foul because there was contact, but be able to still book the player for simulation (afterall, they were fouled but they still dramatised it, which for me falls under simulation...)
What do you think Rob? What is it that makes these changes impractical for football? What changes would you make and how would you go about making them? (after all, the biggest difference for me is the culture of respect, which is bread from day 1 in like under 8s...)
The guy for England who took the dive early in the video was Toby Flood. Good player, prone to doing a bit of shit like that at times.
The Aussie guy, Brendan Cannon, who got the 10 minutes towards the end of the video... I think that was in an Italy vs Australia game and an Italian player had done something to Cannon for which he tried to retaliate against him. Just went and checked, the Italian player went smashing into Cannon at a ruck and Cannon didn't appreciate it. If you look up "Nigel Owens punishes Brendan Cannon punch vs Italy", you'll see the whole incident. And you'll see a flop worthy of the highest levels of Italian football!

Watching this when I was playing football (soccer) when I was younger makes me respect refs much more. I used to be terrible to refs.

That was a special edition for the European Cup, designed in the colours and design of the Basque flag. It is a bit 'busy' but it's like if, say, Cardiff City put a big dragon on their kit when they qualified for Europe. The French rugby teams have a couple who are associated specifically with regional identities, Perpignan being Catalan and Biarritz being Basque.
5:40 to be fair it's the #10 Fly-Half. Both the Fly-Half and #9 Scrum-Half are kind of special.

I don't understand why football can't put it's house in order. Talking back to ref, yellow card. Faking a foul, three match ban, no pay. A couple of months of that and it would be a different world. I'll admit that as it stands the lack of respect and blatant cheating makes the game unwatchable for me.
To hear a football ref talk about rugby is a breath of fresh air, but to hear that you don't have the authority to actually control the game is heartbreaking. I can't imagine being in your position.
It would help if the football referees had the power to review plays. I think in one World Cup (can't remember who was playing) but the referee caught something only because he happened to look up at the big screen and saw the replay. It would also really, really help if footballers stopped play acting and actually played the bloody game. One of the reasons I really only follow the women's world cup (aside from living in the US where we really don't have much to be excited about football wise - even less since our Womens National team seems more interested in taking a knee then playing these last few years.) is for the simple fact those ladies don't take dives. I saw a Japanese footballer take a boot to the head and was bleeding but not once did I see her rolling on the ground acting like she was about to die. The last Women's World Cup I got to see was in Canada ...the UK Women's team was one of my favorites they played there hearts out. So yeah give the referees the power to boot some of these idiot off the field for faking stuff. I want to go to a game to see my favorite sport being played not for amateur acting night at the football pitch.

Okay, two stories to this video.
First, I do have forgot my cards when refereeing a football match. I prepared everything, but I decided to change colour shirt shortly before the match and forgot to take the cards over to the new shirt... And yes, I did need them......
Second, in a handball match, my first match in the Danish Divisions, I showed a red card instead of a yellow, because I had put the cards in the wrong puckets.......
15:37... it is designed based on the flag of the Pays basque ( = "Basque country"). This historic province, composed of seven "regions", is split between Spain (4 regions) and France (3 regions). It displays red/white/green, and colours are arranged identically to the Union Jack.
Although it may seem strange, this jersey looks as close as can be to the original Basque flag. This is what you were upset by. 🤔 Then it was agreed by the EPCR, so...
In this game, Biarritz team was wearing their flag-like jersey, when Saracens players were wearing a black outfit.
The other main club of the Pays basque is Bayonne (usually wearing blue/white jerseys, with a little Basque flag by the neck area), and there is a rivalry between these two clubs
The "hideous" shirts at 16:00 are Biarritz and inspired by the Basque flag, actually resembling the British flag - ironically - but in red, green an white.
One rule to change soccer only the captain can speak to the ref , any mouthing of is 5mins on the sideline .

I entirely understand you view on professional fouls. In rugby it's just used to describe a cynical act of foul play (usually technical rather than violent) where the cynical aspect of it elevates the level of punishment. In years gone by when killing the ball or deliberately knocking on in certain situations, you get penalised or binned but prevent the try, more recently it means the ref can give someone a yellow card even if the try is scored, and even give a penalty try in addition if it isn't. The terminology could certainly be changed for the better, however in rugby at least it is used as a way to indicate intent and as such demand a harsher punishment, which is usually the escalation to a yellow card and sin binning, but rarely is deserving of a red card unless as a second yellow. Hope that makes sense.
15:25 I do agree with you however rugby and football (soccer) are different in regards to the in the moment reactions because in rugby you are already in a physical full contract headspace and your already using your whole body to give and take a bashing so tempers are higher and not much time to think
With regards to football it takes more time skill and thought to play and therefore you have a clearer head to think through so in my opinion it’s a little more unsportsmanlike in football than rugby because I think they would be in different head-spaces just because of the fundamental nature of both sports

No, it's not "footballers are footballers"... Whoever plays football must play by the rules, whatever thousands of pounds you're being paid per game - if you cheat, you cheat, which is unacceptable ... and off you go...

Just want to know, why don’t you have the power to stop that complaining. Not only the complaining but also that with the lightest touch they behave like they are almost dying. It is so very annoying . Why don’t referees
give a card for things like that. That 10 minut penalty should also be a great thing to have.
rugby refs have more flexibility. If a team playing football handballed 2 seconds before the other team did a fowl. You cant say i cancel how the handball because you fowled him 2 seconds after the hand ball. Football is so touchy.
Football as to much money full of cheats and no sportsmanship at all . Rugby a different sport ..
You get sent off, just get on with it, there's no need for all the rest of the players to get involved, or screaming at the referee - get a life you no hopes...
I used to play Rugby. A great game to play but kinda tedious to watch. Pretty much 30 blokes standing around on a field watching a refereeing exhibition.
