He’s simply the best rugby ref ever, hugely respected And surprisingly in such a manly sport he’s gay. And he has always stated that he cannot believe the amount of support he’s received since he came out!
Nigel got so much surpport when came out as being homosexual. He once saw a throw in that was throw curved. He blew his whistle and shouted "I'm straighter then that......." he's rightfully a legend.
I was hoping that clip would be in the compilation. Such an inspiration that sexuality aside, you master a topic and work to become respected for it. I hate to see our man Owen Farrell in the dog house but if Nigel wants you, you better respect his authority and listen to the man. Damn I miss proper Rugby since COVID.
Nigel is absolutely great and the whole rugby community loves him. It's hard to believe that he has struggled with his coming out, suffered of bulimic, depression and even tried to kill himself. He is an inspiration for many, many people.
I reffed (after playing 26 years) for 10 years, and Nigel is the best ref I have watched. What Nigel shows and emphasises, is not just knowing the laws, but a deep empathy with the players. His sexuality has nothing to do with his professionalism and talent.
I believe the padding that you questioned was the body camera harness/undervest that rugby referees wear. It did look bulkier than expected so I may be very wrong on that!
Connor 👍so glad you did Nigel Owens, the man is a legend and you were spot on with your evaluation of him as he talks to these massive guys with respect and they melt Infront of him like kids,he doesn't shout and swear just calmly explains what is going to happen and why and he will always talk to his other eyes and ears on the sidelines to make the right call he is a true master of rugby. Thanks buddy ✌️🇬🇧✌️🇺🇸🍻
I am not a Rugby fan but admire the conduct of the players and the respect to the Referee. That was a good reaction and you are, clearly, right, in that Nigel would have succeeeded anywhere as he constantly communicates and is fair and seen to be fair.
Nigel is a great public speaker as well. I saw him a while back and in about 40 mins he described his incredible highs like refing the World Cup Final, to his lowest of lows like his suicide attempt when he had not yet accepted his sexuality in rural West Wales as a young man. In the audience every emotion was experienced, from proper laughing out load to crying along with him. It was truly a memorable evening.
In rugby you have 1 Referee who is in control of the game. There are also 2 Assistant Referees whose job is to show where the ball crossed the touch line and to advise the referee on any events that they may miss So in the last clip he is checking with the assistant referee to see if he has missed anything before he makes his decision
Not all rugby players are “Man Mountains”. One retired Wales player was Shane Williams. He retired from the Wales team in 2013. he was 5ft 7in tall and when you see him in the Wales line up he is dwarfed by his team mates. He got very emotional in his final match for Wales, search for “Shane Williams Last Match Anthem”. He is the shorter man in the team line up and showing his emotions.
13:29 "Side Ref" the other guy is a touch judge, he runs up and down the side line (2 of them) they look at foul play, forward pasts and if the ball or someone holding the ball goes out of ground
Nigel Owens, the most respected man in rugby 🏉. An absolute legend. I played cricket and rugby all through my school years, (70-80s ) I was the scrum half in our team. I also live ruffly 35klm from where Rugby was invented, so playing rugby was part of growing up, along with all the injuries, cuts, bruises, dislocations, broken bones, knock outs and the odd concussion, and all before I left school at 16. Pmsl. My son also played rugby throughout his school years too. Minus all the injuries and fights on the field though, school team Rugby doesn't seem as brutal as it was when I played. Lol.
Love the hat. OMG Nigel Owens. I must admit though, those northern hemisphere refs are a vast improvement on what they were twenty years ago. Geez they used to give southern teams grief. Cheers👍👍😊😊
Nigel Owens reminds me of an old school welsh teacher, from when I was a kid in South Wales in the late 80s and 90s this is how a lot of my teachers were, obviously Nigel is an individual and a great ref ,but I just mean he really does bring back memories of some of my school teachers when like you said he just commands people to listen not in a bullying type if voice, and they will anyway because they like his confidence and respect but also its give and take too 💯 and that's the difference between him and some other good refs, and officials and other people who sort of get a power trip when they are put in a position of authority, like u said u gotta respect his professionalism 💯 Good vid bro keep it up 💯😎✌👊🙏
The main thing with Mr Nigel Owens is that he wants to see good Rugby and fair Rugby, (not always the same thing thats' why he was brilliant) and everyone knows that. It probably can't be trained but God I wish it could.
Not sure if anyone answered your question at 8:25 but what Nigel is wearing under his Jersey is sports shirt and a thick vest, on this vest it has attached his mic, mic pack and all the cords tied together in a pouch. It also allows his earpiece to be hooked up so he can hear the TMO and side line referees.Back then you can also see him wearing a small camera which appears in the middle of his chest this was for "Ref Cam" Moments so all the mechanisms to hook the camera up to the screens plus the battery pack are all included on this vest! It's a thick vest but now all refs on TV just wear the thinner vests just with mics.
The padding is the comms to TV so we can hear the refereeing decisions. But he also refers to a TV referee who can use slow motion and all the camera angles for big decisions. Hope that helps.
Nigel Owens is awesome and very personable, would be interesting to reach out to him and see if you could record a zoom interview. Soccer/football needs referees like him, that have respect and authority
everyone on the field wears something so broadcast teams can track who's where, Mr Owens is also wearing a camera and radio miic, so he can communicate with the TMO (Television Match Official, Video Ref) I think all refs for a certain level of game are mic'd up, both for scrutiny and for broadcast.
So at 13:34 the other ref is the lines man, there is 1 either side and they will run along with the game to call if the ball is out, what side has the ball to play it back in, confirm if a conversion (field goal) is good and act as additional eyes for the main ref on the pitch. There is also a TMO (so someone that watches the feed) that the ref can speak to that can show on the main screen angles of play if there has been a penalty or a try (touchdown) that needs reviewing
The Ref has 2 TOUCH JUDGES .... 1 for each sideline. They will signal when the ball goes into touch (goes over the sideline) using their flag. Also, when they see an infringement, they will hold out their flag ... when the Ref see's the flag and is able to stop play, he will consult with the Touch Judge on what the Touch Judge saw (eg, number 12 black late tackle on number 9) and maybe ask for the Touch Judge's recommendation (penalty). However, the Ref gets the final decision as he sees fit.
Nigel Owens...A legend of a Ref. Soccer/Football is a gentlemans game...played by hooligans. Rugby is the Hooligans game, played by gentlemen. Most of this is due to the Referees and the tools they have to keep a chaotic game like rugby in order. Particularly when there is a penalty...no player wants to be the Douche that costs his team falling back another 10m...every metre on the field is hard fought...giving away a silly penalty is a real let down for the team. This really affects the way players interact with referees...
He runs a little cattle farm in West Wales. He's sadly retired, and the game won't be the same without him. I don't know if anyone's answered the question but refs wear a harness with a camera that peeks out of their collar. They also wear a radio mic to talk to their assistants and TMO. Obviously it all requires batteries for 2 hours or so.
Stuff across his chest is the radio equipment for the mic and camera. Cracking ref and huge respect for fellow Welshman big Nige. Best clip not included in the squewed line out when he says "I' straighter than that". (He's an openly gay man).
ref on pitch, 2 linesmen down each touchline (side of pitch) - they also check with each other to confirm is a penalty/conversion has gone over, ref consults the touch judge if he didn't catch something or if the touch-judge raises his flag for a foul he saw, the assitant/TMO (television match offical) has eyes over all proceedings and can tell the ref about something after the event - ref can decide whether to stop the game or reverse a previous decision - e.g. he might be playing advantage but the TMO might draw his attention to a professional foul (I don't think they'd interfere if it was just a knock-on but if it leads to a try it might be reviewed)
there's a clip of Nigel Owens on a mobile on the pitch and that is him ringing the TMO because comms have gone down - whereas he can still communicate with the touch-judges verbally or visually (they raise their flag). I imagine the harness under his shirt has comms gear, inc. video more recently, batteries and prob a gps tracker - padding probably to protect the kit more than the ref - usually they've played scrum-half or in the backs are nimble enough to get out the forwards way!
One thing you may have missed was the disallowed try, when he signalled that the ball had been held up. Could he have been in any better position to make the call? That was typical.
He’s the main referee. But he has other touch judges which he can confer with . In rugby you also have a video ref which can over turn or make a call . Not allowing the try (touchdown) or allowing it as they see fit . Nigel is actually one of the few refs in rugby that everybody loves . Great guy Iv watched him ref since I was a kid he favourite line is “ this is rugby not soccer “ loool
Nigel is the epitome of firm but fair he struck a perfect balance and the players loved and respected that. He does give chances to them when he can when other refs go to cards too easily. But they knew when he tells them last chance he means it. There is no coming back. Cards will come out.
He is the classics example of how referees should be, once upon a time referees in rugby would have been the school teacher or headmaster when it was first played and so the school kids playing it would call the referee ‘sir’. And so when you look at Nigel and how he behaves it is very reminiscent of a teacher/headmaster reprimanding student, and look to how the players react, very much like a student/kid being put in their place, funny considering these guys are huge and could do some damage but they just take the scolding. This is an example of why rugby all about respect. Go out there knock seven lumps out of each other but it must be controlled aggression and to do that you need a ref that can control that.
Hi Connor, don’t know if this is the place to recommend it but there’s a video called al Murray does Brighton posted by RawrLukehx I think you’ll like it!
There's no views yet according to YT :) again, I can't believe your upload schedule. Also make sure to not burn yourself out, this stuff was probably pre-recorded en-mass so that you can get a break while you have these videos for scheduled release, but still try and not burn yourself out.
Thanks man! Every video I upload was recorded the same day but I do tend to record 2 or 3 back-to-back and upload them together 😆 So yes I am going to need to take more breaks
I know its irrelevant to this reaction, but can you react to the the Battle of Greece series by the Kings and Generals channel? Its really detailed with the movements of the troops, describing of major events etc.
The rugby Union refs have a two way radio and a chest camera, the ref, lines men and the TMO (television match official)are always in contact during the match. The TMO’s are constantly looking for wrong doing off the ball and when a call is unclear, the TMO will look at all the tapes from each camera to check any question from the on field referee.
It's probably the outline of his best you're seeing. It's sort of like a sports bra. They use it to hold a small GPS tracker which they use as a learning tool after the games.
Nigel was the best ref ever, in rugby all players respect Refs and what he says goes, but Nigel was more respected because he was fair and also funny with the players, but if you got on the wrong side of the laws you knew he would send you off, and you accepted it. The reason he looks so big is in rugby now refs carry a camera, which is why you thought he was sitting down, can be a problem sometimes with bad words being shouted by the players. Nigel is now a Farmer and does a podcast each week about current ref calls, and beleive me his Cows are shit scared of him 🙂 You will also heard him comment that he was straigther than the lineout throwin, this is funny as Nigel is the first ref to come out gay, which in rugby you would have thought would be hell, but all players respected him and never ever made fun of him.
Simple, if a player is sent off for 10 minutes a yellow card, or a red card a permanent sending off - you lose the game. He's a Welshman so he has a barrel torso - I know lam Welsh. :)
No, Nigel isn't wearing tactical armor. That's that useless "sternum mounted camera" and his communication equipment (touch judges and TMO etc). As for the camera, if they put a camera in a pair of glasses it would be useful. The eyes of the ref don't necessarily point where the sternum is pointing. At this level, the refs work as a crew. Two Touch Judges, a TMO and a guy to manage substitutions/ sin-binnings. The ref and touch judges will rotate in and out of the middle by game. Nigel retired from 'professional' reffing after his 100th international match. He does still do the occasional schoolboy or armature event close by his beef farm in Whales though.
It has always been said that rugby is a hooligans game plaid by gentleman and football (soccer to Americans) is a gentleman's game played by hooligans. Yes rugby players respect the ref. and would never touch him where as football players often shove them around to make their points.
The players in Rugby Union have total respect for the referee in football they have almost zero respect for the referee thats why Nigel said the soccer field is down the road.

Nigel is the GOAT. My favourite referee ever, by far. BTW, the padding you see is for their microphone set up.
And possibly additional equipment for the camera he's wearing on his chest (it's like a GoPro or something similar)... 👌🏼
He re minds me of Paddy O'Reilly from New Zealand 🇳🇿

Just had a quick check and there are 80 rugby teams in New England, would be fun if you went down to one and had a bit of a go and film it for us 😁👍
Nigel Owens is a first language Welsh speaker. English is his second language which makes this even better.

Maybe all ref's should be mked up so we can hear what is going on.
It has always been said that rugby is a hooligans game plaid by gentleman and football (soccer to Americans) is a gentleman's game played by hooligans.
Yes rugby players respect the ref. and would never touch him where as football players often shove them around to make their points.
Markater. The map projection.
Rugby union players will accept what the ref would tell them, yet football players will usually argue to hell and back.
The other 10 Minutes of Nigel Owens video is even better, so you should react to that too ua-cam.com/video/yf3NdyeGtgU/v-deo.html
Welsh is always best 🏴🏴🏴
The players in Rugby Union have total respect for the referee in football they have almost zero respect for the referee thats why Nigel said the soccer field is down the road.
