It was once used to raise funds for displaced residents, but is no longer available commercially. The recent flow of lava into Kapoho Bay has increased interest in the Kilauea eruptions.
Kalapana, the Red Road, Pohoiki and Kapoho are still my favorite places in Hawaii.

This was one of the finest videos that I have ever seen. It was professional and yet very touching. I could almost feel like I was there watching the lava in circle me. Well done
A beautiful video chronicling the constant growth and evolution of this island, Hawaii. It's particularly refreshing to hear calmness in reporting. Videos like this remind us of what once was, on many levels.

Thank you for providing an insightful timeline of the destruction caused by the Volcanic eruption and lava flow. Very sad and I guess the people who chose to live there knew of the risk however thought it would never happen to them. It was sad to see the slow devastation of what was such a beautiful area and community of people. The biggest loss will be the community of people who have been displaced yet i would say they will rebuild elsewhere stronger than ever. what's fascinating was the barrier caused by the old stone wall which diverted the flow for some time then stopped it for a short time. Sadly not for long and now there are only old photo's and memories left to pass on to the next generations. My prayers go out to all the families of Kalapana and surrounding areas.
Auckland New Zealand is build on volcanic landscape with over 16 supposedly extinct volcanoes. Rangitoto being one of the big ones. White Island is an active volcano on the east coast out to sea and lately the earthquakes have been quiet active along the fault line. The sadness of this loss is still there as I watch this video. I visited Kalapana in 1984 as Kilauea came to life. In 1990 I watched the painted church being moved, then I was again in the village (on a Civil Defense pass) around May 5, just after the store was lost. I met-up with volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft; we respected the homes' losses, never filming or photographing them. We were at the bubbling brackish water pond, and watched lava slowly flow into another pond. The Krafft's were lost a year later at the eruption of Japan's Mt. Unzen.

I loved this video for its' deep reach in to the human heart of an eruption. I sailed volcano rescue in the Navy. This Video took us there.... I was at Etna offshore for an eruption, inside Vesuvius with Smoking Fumerols of warm gasses. Volcanoes are mega Powerful and beautiful to watch. Very nice Video....

When you choose to live near an active volcano, surely you must keenly aware that your homestead or store is temporary. It’s not if, but when you will lose it. Insurance must have cost an arm and a leg!

Tara, I lived in Kalpana in 1973. So beautiful. Used to swim in the Queen's Bath. Saddens my heart to know it is gone. Just memories and photos left now. What a privelige it was to be there. God bless Hawaii 🌴

Sad, but a known risk. Anyone who lives in the high to moderate risk zones knows (or should know) s/he may have to rebuild or move away at some time, without enough, if any, insurance proceeds to cover the cost. Itʻs the only reason I donʻt live there now ... Iʻm just too old to start over. I lived on Oʻahu for many years and frequented the Big Island, Hilo being my favorite little city in the world. Itʻs stuck in the ʻ70ʻs, with enough of the 21st century for just about everything one would need.
No one can be guaranteed permanence ANYWHERE. In Hawaiʻi, the concern is a stunningly beautiful volcano that may (will) take your property, but rarely takes a life.
Why would they decide to put their houses in the paths of the volcanos in the first place? It seems stupid in my opinion.

I remember when this happened, I was just a young girl. People should have learned from our history, but people wanted to build in a high risk zone knowing that it would happen again.

That's how inhabitans of Hercolanum would have felt if they would have survived the eruption of Vesuvio. Loosing Kalapana must be devastated but then you are Kalapana and you still live. So Kalapana is not gone. Its only enriched with new land so you can rebuild it.

What a beautiful tribute to your town. It is so sad what level does do when we have floods or fires were able to rebuild but when we have volcanoes and lava you lose the land literally that you had but I was impressed with what the people do in Italy with Vesuvius they just go ahead and build right on top that was very interesting. I'm sure that the Hawaiians do the same thing just like we do here in the Great Northwest we have flooding in fires we just go ahead and build right back on top. When we love a place we love it for life don't we?
Purgatory of Hope but if you rebuilt and get burned out again don't expect taxpayers to bail you out--why should they? You chose to live on there, live with the consequences!

You cannot escape nature. No matter where you live, you will face some threat from nature. So go live where you are happy. If the beautiful island and all it has to offer, makes you happy and blessed, then GO! Live and be happy. If nature strikes, rebuild. Its not suppose to be about materialistic crap anyway. Make peace with nature. Find that balance. Cause the other option is to try and outsmart it. Living in a "safe" place. Miserable and lacking. Only to realize nature will strike anyway. And you still will lose your battle with it. So fight it and lose. Or learn to live with it and be happy.

It seems like a short distance from the volcano to the ocean. Since the lava flow is slow why dont they just bulldoze a channel to the ocean to reduce the destruction.
ak Alksdr really? Ever tried to bulldoze a solid chunk of lava the size of our island, the whole thing is one big solid lava rock. I have soil on my property but can't dig a hole 2 feet deep...one big rock!
+Jon Rothenbusch As a kid I tried to dig a hole in my backyard in Florida & only got about 6 inches deep before hitting rock. The land is mostly coral rock w/ little soil. Sometimes they use dynamite or rock cutting machines to dig house foundations. Is that how they do it in HI?
A'a (this stuff) is much harder than the pahoehoe type but it CAN be dozed with a big dozer (D8-D11?) with hardened blades. Slow process especially if you hit what's called blue rock. There is so much volume a trench would have to be monstrous and 10 miles long. Maybe years and millions to cut....plus bust up a few dozers.
And I think they have tried it. But the lava goes where it wants to eventually

Peter: If it's like CA (fires, mudslides) or a Gulf state (hurricanes) or lower midwest (tornados)....get govt to (unConstitutionally) buy you a new home every 3 years. HI is a deep blue state....might happen (doubt it).
Trailer houses would have been nice to have you think? You can hook it up and move it out of the way just in a few hours..while your up to do neighbors watch their fancy house burn to the ground.

Jon Rothenbusch you answered your own question..ships carry millions of cargo containers and equipment across the oceans every year..I'm sure they could build docks to ship them and receiveing docks to off load them..some minor assembly may need to be done when you get it on your land but it could be done.
John spencer I shipped 2 vintage motorcycles and a VW beetle to my home on the Big Island and it cost nearly $8000, a single wide trailer would probably cost $35-40,000. It goes by size not weight, I don't remember ever seeing a trailer here, there must be a good reason and my guess would be the cost. Also they won't last 2 years in the tropics.

Cheryl Smith well when you are born and raised on the big Island of Hawaii it's a way of life...it's no different then people who live in places where hurricanes, tornados and floods happen yearly. ..sometimes more than once a year. At least with us we live on an active volcano that has the potential to erupt but it's not something that can happen for sure to you...it's a possibility but not a grantee. You just know that it can happen to you and you live with and prepare for that possibility. Also the Big Island is a very big island that allows for many of us to live on the island in parts where we live on a volcano but in areas where we will never in our lifetime have to go through this but our future great, great, great, great grand children will when the volcano erupts again. If you are born in Hawaii you are not just going to move to the mainland just because of a volcano. ...it's the only place you know and the only way of life you know. It's the same for you...would you do the same in your position because of mother nature because I can grantee that where you live you must also face the consequences of mother nature but you aren't saying the same to yourself nor thinking of moving because of it.

How increadibly irresponsible it is to let your dogs run loose around actively flowing lava!
You're right it is irresponsible to let a dog run around without a leash. And not to mention the gases can hurt their lungs. However those dogs have better sense than their owners they wont get anywhere near it.
Robert Davis You can't adequately judge the temperature of the cooling black lava yet it can be extremely hot. This is the risk, plus many gasses collect in a layer close to the ground which could effect the dogs much more than the people realize. It is not a wise risk to be taking with them.In this very video is says "even after a week the cooling lava is too hot to walk on".

Those folks don't realize both dogs and those folks are breathing serious poisons. Some may end up with Black Lung Disease and all the islands are affected when it comes to this kind of respiratory diseases. This video the Lava has been going super strong since 1983. Most likely refers to Pele’s “flames” (fountains, fires, etc during times of lava flow), although we are not 100% sure. I am 100% sure it has nothing to do with “coco” or coconut, however. Aloha.

Much is pretty cheap. Buy on the mauka side of 11 and pretty damn safe. Not near ocean...but you can see it. Cooler due to elevation. Many places have forest....soil. Coqui's and damn abizia trees.
