No matter what happen, I'm still happy that Jung Hwan was able to properly confess to deok sun until the end. Even if he declared that it's a joke for his friends, Deok sun knows it's real. She was just shocked that Jung Hwan admitted that he liked her for real because that's what she's been waiting for before. Both of them knows that they will never be together as lovers when that confession happened. That confession is like the acknowledgement of what happen between them. That they really had something. It is also the closure for both of them. They already grow as a different individuals with different priorities and maturity hits them too. I believe that Jung Hwan's confession protected their friendships. If he didn't said that it's a joke, imagine that 2 of their friends will feel awkward and being torn and that they will blamed theirselves cause they were insensitive of Jung Hwan's feelings. Deok Sun can't treat Jung Hwan as her real friend just like before she will feel guilty for being happy with Taek. That's why the confession scene is one of the best thing that ever happened in the drama. I cried with happy tears cause finally Jung hwan can finally forgive himself and move on. I'm team Jung Hwan forever. Just my opinion.

Honestly, as you said, that scene gave us a much awaited closure. Throughout the drama it was very difficult for me to imagine that junghwan will never confess, but then he did. The way he tells it and then dismisses it as a joke conveys his feelings just to her. This scene represents why it is such a great drama and is the reason why Reply 1988 is my favourite.

Even though Ryu Jun Yeol and Hyeri are dating in real life, it can never help me get over the fact that Jung Hwan and Duk Seon did not walk down the aisle. Seeing them together with this song in the background gives me goosebumps. Also this the first and the only K Drama where I cried in the confession scene.

we can say that he really hesitated alot of times, but its just because he value their friendship over his own feelings. he always stepback whenever he got to know someone from them has feelings for deoksun. also when taek called the doctor to saved the doctor. he is selfless. he deserves nothing but happiness. i really hoped he ended up with her but maybe there is someone who can be the best for him.

I never once thought that junghwan is the second lead. Even after they show us all the mandatory romantic scenes for main leads belong to taek, like playing in the beach under the sunset. Or when they show how deoksun secretly take care of taek in china. Even up until the last episode i was hoping for a twist that never happen. This show really made us happy for like 99% of the time then breaks our heart in the end

I don't know if she was really in love. It might've just been a crush like with Sun-woo y'know. I don't know. Maybe she did love him. But anyways, it's natural to have insecurities, everyone can't be Taek I guess. Plus, he mostly hesitated because he knew Taek liked her and he didn't want to hurt his friend either.
