- The Donner Harmonic Square Pedal is an octave and pitch shift pedal that creates unique sounds. This sort of effects pedal is not my sort of thing usually, but I thought it was worth a shot! Find out about it at the website below.

He's talking to chipmunks I think he's finally lost it
😳😂
Some of those settings: The scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they never stopped to think if they should
Been using this pedal for a few years. I mostly use it in the 2 octaves up position on a specific song, but I bought it to fake the bass one night when the bass player was absent. A signal splitter into this with the dry at 0 and the wet maxed, and then through the bass cab worked well, but it's a very versatile pedal. The middle positions almost works as a chorus.
How's the latency ? I bought a pedal like this 20 years ago. The latency interfered w my playing.
@@terryenglish7132 Did you not listen? There's no latency LOL
@@markusaurelius777 No you rude jackass, at no point does he mention latency. Tracking, yes, but that's not latency.
@@markusaurelius777 Rudass, you're confusing latency w tracking ability. Latency isn't mentioned.
For weird things, this actually seems very versatile. I can imagine using it as a doubling when we don't have a 12-string guitar or even to create some weird siren effects, to mimic ambulances and stuff like that. Cool !!!
Affordable pedals have really come into their own, pedals from Donner, Tone City and Joyo are absolutely insane for the price.
After watching your review, I have one of these on the way. I can see how it transforms some chords into multiple inversions sounding type of chords. I like the way the upper octaves have sort of, SYNTH sound. Thank you Shane!
You are one of the best guitar gear reviewers! This is very helpful!
You're one of the best pedal users I've ever seen. I've gotta say! 👌
The colour of that fretboard is to die for. Great job Shane
thanks! I wanted to know how these sounded and this video answered my questions.
Great demo, thank you Shane.
Thanks! Nice demo
Just ordered one. Thanks for this. I've got the Donner yellow delay pedal. I like that.
There is a setting on this pedal that sounds exactly like Kurt's "Come As You Are" guitar sound. It's a great pedal with tons of uses. I've even used it to turn my guitar into a bass in a pinch. It doesn't break up like a lot of the octave pedals out there.
I found that tone as well. I actually like it better than my chorus pedal.
How do i get it to sound like a chorus
@@thatsexyskaterasmr1580 Switch is in the middle. Are you another one who did not watch the entire video????
The attention span of some people LOL
Well, you answered my main question in the first 25 seconds! This is gonna be so sweet!
Interesting tones/sounds.
great vid Shane!
The +/-5 and 7 settings on detune sounded really good. They sounded like they'd go good with blues rock.
Just ordered this of Amazon it's coming tomorrow after watching this i can't wait!!
Me too!
How did you like it?
@@briancherry8088 Not gonna lie I've rarely used it. I had the idea in my head based of the video that i wanted buy it so i could use it to primarily to create some funky variations of tunes I've been jamming with. The sharp position dialled to 2 oct sounded cool at the time with the double octave in the treble. Perhaps i need to experiment more with different tunes to get a better idea.
Awesome, I'm really loving Donner. I own a few of there pedals, power bricks & large pedalboard. very cool stuff. Blues On....
The detune setting almost sounds like the lead guitar in the South Park intro/outro music
Thanks , this video helps. Looking for country style harmonies as well as some grunge sounds.
I just ordered one. I'll be using it for the octave down, slight detune ala Lynyrd Skynyrd "Call Me the Breeze" and the 5th down pitch for the harmony in "Stealin'" by Uriah Heep.
This looks like a hell of a deal!
I know this is an old video, but why not. A lot of the fun of pitch shifters comes when combined with other pedals. Driving an octave down into a thick fuzz sounds monstrous, running a heavily gated, synthy fuzz into a detune and playing quick staccato runs gives you a great sci fi feel, and running an octave up into a rotary speaker and reverb (or vibrato->trem->heavy spring reverb if you want something that sounds like an old B-movie soundtrack) and playing palm muted arpeggios gives a great creepy organ sound.
get that out of shimmer effect reverb pedal alone
The flat setting is definitely the most useful one IMO. The sharp setting does have some fun stuff in there though, some of the sounds remind me of a harmonica being played in the mix. The detune setting is kind of like a pretty bad chorus, would probably never use that setting myself.
That 'chipmunk' sound reminds me of the tape effects on classic Les Paul and Mary Ford records.
I mostly use the octave down or if we're out a bass player, I'll use just the octave down full wet/no dry and play most parts as bass, but switch it off for occasional guitar contributions between bass parts.
There sure are a lot of interesting sounds you can get out of that pedal. :D
Great review thanks. Funny seeing a fellow lefty playing!! :)
I like this way more than I expected to... I like the 'detune' for guitar but I had my sights set on the 'octave low' setting for a little turd keyboard that I've come to enjoy messing with after modding it...
Well dam, with the octave setting I could sound like a bass then have my bass player play some guitar.
Had the Mooer PitchBox and this sounds like it is way better and cheaper too? Best octave, harmony for the money? I want to do sub octave, octave up and +7 for that Yes - Owner of a Lonely Heart solo tone.
It's like having a 12 string with the bass strings paired with a treble. Cool.
How does it work with the wet all the way up and the dry all the way down on the 1 octave setting to use as just a bass sound for looping?
I have this pedal. I use it for three things---- to imitate a bass guitar,.to Imitate a 12 string guitar, and to simply play in a different key without having to learn new chord shapes for the same song. Now this is not going to sound as authentic as the guitars I mentioned but if you are pressed for cash or you just want those sounds once in a while without shelling out hundreds of more for those guitars, do what I do and use this pedal or one similar to it.
Hows the latency ? The first generation of these things, it was bad.
This is such a versatile pedal in a small form factor! Plus using it 100% wet can do a fake bass guitar in a pinch. Also you can get better sludge metal sounds by feeding this into a fuzz pedal
The Apex Theory uses an effect like this in “Bullshed” and “Apossibly.” Super great prog-rock band!
muy buen video saludos desde tijuana
I'm really thinking about this or something similar .. I tried a really inexpensive one but it doesn't cut it onstage. This looks cool for some country or R&B
This seems like fun but I want to use it for my synthesizers. Wonder how it sounds if I route a kick trough it
I just ordered this Pedal for 30 BUCKS USD this is a good demo. Use with modulation and reverb and delays to make some nice AMBIENT GUITAR MUSIC.
As always, great demo! I would be interested in hearing this as an Octave above on Bass. I've been messing with these kinds of sounds and am looking for another alternative to buying a NanoPOG. As well, I would use this to create Bass lines while messing with Guitar looping. Again, great job and thanks for what you are doing in the Guitar community.
Me too! I can't find a cheap octaver I really love.
Same, thank you thats exactly what I'm wanting it for. Lots of texturing n looping
Looking for same - anyone found a good pedal for creating bass lines?
Electro-Harmonix Pitch Fork is the best pedal for turning acoustic/electric guitar into bass but not cheap unfortunately. Great for looping w/ a bass sound
In the input, could i plug in a mic and play a sax into it
This pedal works amazingly with bass
Did you run a bass guitar through it? I’m thinking of getting it for that
Nice demo! Does the Dry knob, at the minimum position, kill the dry signal completely? If it does, the pedal could be used for getting alternative tunnings. For example, using -2 semitones setting in flat mode for going from E standard to D standard tunning.
jesusalmartin Yea
My question exactly
I'd be curious how much of your tone is coming through at that point. That could be really useful though if it works.
You'd just be getting synth tone...
I think it's an interesting pedal. I think I'll save for it.
Can you play the octave down of Seven Nation Army with this? I'm trying to find a good Octave Pedal, Because The Sonicake Octaver Just went out of stock. So yeah, I'm thinking of gettin' this one. So can you Play Seven Nation Army with it?
did u experienced any latency or weird sound ? Thanks
in lead mode with heavy distortion would sound good = the band Queen and so on* plus using in high-gain would allow us to hear how much noise the pedal has or not?
So if I’m at a gig, I can drop a half step right, on my bass?
But can you achieve those really high Brian may type tones?
If Im standard tunning how lower can I go and viceverza!
Is this finally an Allman Brothers in a pedal pedal?
It does sound like you can get the Allman Bros octave sound without having 17 guitarists in your band!
Nice
Love when you laugh at the off the wall weird sounds. Hahahaaa
can you use this pedal for bass? too scared to try
How does it track compared to the Hotone Harmony Shane?
Can you get a 12 string electric type sound on it?
Can you use this to emulate a bassline?
Can it go down tuning with the detune
Can you turn the guitar signal off completely so that it sounds like a bass??
How does this pedal work on acoustic guitars?
I'm curious how well this would handle +1 octave with full wet signal and no (or almost no) dry signal? Any thoughts? If it does that well that could be a great octave up lead thing to play with.
Yep, works well enough for me. There's some weird warbling, but overall, still fun. Buy a foxrox if you want to done well.
Can you go form E to Eb with this?
can i use it as a drop pedal?
For me this would be a fantastic pedal purely because I have to detune due to a skin condition which makes it harder on my fingers. I already use 7s and the only way I can play for any longer than just a few minutes at a time is by detuning. If I use one of these I can get my tone hopefully back to standard and play normal stuff
Can I use that Donner Harmonic Square for the guitar solo such as Iron Maiden "The Trooper", The Eagles "Hotel California", and other bands who played a dual guitar?
Yeah, you just have to mess around with the settings until you get the right pitch/sound. I use it to play dual harmonies in any Metallica song I play
whats the differance between detune and flat
turn the dry all the way off and the wet all the way up..take it down a half step and you just drop tuned your whole guitar...very useful for drop tuning, chorus type, and 12 string.....
and you cant beat $45. i think the made in China is a stigma that will eventually change. There are some great products coming from there. i've had American products break as well.
I couldn't see really using anything below the 5 semitones setting unless you build your lines using only the tones within your scale with major or minor thirds. 2 I find totally worthless unless you turn the dry signal off and use it as a detune or capo replacement.
How's the latency ?
but what about running two of these in series??
I think Steve Vai would like this !🤣 Actually I think there would be some unique chord sounds this pedal would be good for... I do like Donner pedals, I have the verb square and the yellow fall.
Does it do whammy??
So will this work for just reducing my tone one octave with the dry turned all the way down?
yeah but there will be a slight delay from when you hit the string to when the sound comes out of the amp by about half a second
Just to follow up. I've been using this pedal onstage for a couple of country rock tunes and one rocker. It works really well. I use an eq pedal to get a little more volume on the distorted stuff.
I play a variety of styles with different bands. A lot if useful funk tones I'd use to mimic 12 string guitar applications. Not a pedal I'd use all the time but i can hear quite a few uses
What guitar is that?
It does +2 semitones but not +1?
You can use it just tone up or tone down. There's an option of just playing one note a time instead of doubling it. I don't know why that future is not shown on this video don't know why, is the most useful thing about this pedal.
Now I can play the buddy holly lick two octaves up and not hear it because it goes past the hearing range! Yes. Exactly what I need!
have someone tried to use it for vocals
Love this pedal! Every time I turn it on, I get lost in it. I get some great far eastern sounds out of it.
Can you get it to sound close to a sitar?
This pedal sounds phat on fretless bass with a 10 cent detune
Is it a looper?
Can you tune down half step (Eb) from standard with this? Can you turn off the chorus effect? All i need is a basic cheap pedal that can tune down half a step.
The drop!
@@FabioStoppa that pedal is like $250 bro bro
Hi Guys , does this pedal go down by a semi tone ? E flat tuning (With the guitar in standard) . And how is the latency ?
It starts at plus or minus 2 semi tones, however you can use the detune setting and go up or down by 10 cents and that's the closest you'd get to going up or down 1 semitone
Where would you put this on your board? I have mine after my tuner/booster/&overdrives but I'm not sure if that's the best order.
It should be first in the chain right after the tuner b4 the overdrive/distortion. Sounds best there
I would definitely put it before your overdrive / distortion. Most octave pedals sound better when you add distortion after the signal.
I use it with the dp3 pedal to get a dug pinick 8 string kings X sound.
Anyone know if this pedal can be used for thin Lizzy style Guitar harmony's (convincingly)??
I was after something to do the same .
@@Bluejeanmusic1984 I bought the mooer pitch box which is this pedal but more expensive, get this one does the trick
Thank you for the reply. I will look into that one 🤘👍🎸
As far as I'm aware no. Because something like the Boss Harmonist PS6 adapts to the scale you select and produces the scale notes correctly. The Harmonic Square doesn't, because adjusting by Semitones isn't the same as playing scales that are thirds apart (someone can correct me on that if I'm wrong).
Hi. Did you find the pedal had a very slight delay when on?
I noticed the octave up setting seems to have a very minor millisecond delay but honestly it still tracks good in my opinion, I've been using it on some recordings recently.
Can THis pedal be used to tune your guitar up a half step for U2 songs?
well, yes and no. It may sound different from your dry guitar signal with a capo at the 2nd fret.
Ah ..... well maybe if you want to make some funky psychedelic space music that pedal will definitely work!
What do the wet and dry knobs do? Wet and Dry are not very descriptive.
It's how much of the pedal (wet) you'll hear versus the dry (guitar) signal. It's a blend control basically.
@@intheblues Thank you for your explanation. I was using chatGPT to find the answer. IT makes sense now
Nice sound. Now does say -7 semitones or plus mean that the second simulated note is 7 semitones up or lower from the actual note and of course same rules for plus 3 or minus etc.
Yes
The one that showed up had latency issues. Sent it back. Might be a get what you pay for situation. The Donner Delay is good though.
I couldn't tell, could it do both a sub and high octave at the same time?
Nah, just one. There are pedals that do that, but they tend to be 'Octave' pedals that don't do harmonies inbetween, just the straight + or - whole octave sounds. The Mooer Pure Octave is one of those I just saw browsing, sure there's many more.
Can you make it so that it only plays the pitch shifted sound, and not the original signal?
Yeah, just turn the dry setting off
Can this make a guitar sound like a bass and reverse?
Furby Squiers yup
And it can make a bass sound like an ungodly low, detuned monstrosity.
