You are one of the few photographers that shoot leica for legitimate reasons and knows what he is talking about. Love your videos and I appreciate your love for fountain pens too :P
Thank you :-)
You gave me a heart attacked when you hit that lens shade !!! HOLY MOLY :3
Thank you, Thorsten! You are actually a true Leica Ambassador and honestly, you are one of the reasons why I bought a Leica camera. I hope to attend one of your workshops or masterclasses this year! Thank you very much for everything you do. You are a true inspiration to many! Wishing you a great day, good mood and smile on your face,
T.
Thanks. Great to hear!
The color in your video is just gorgeous.
Do you use filter on your leica lenses for everyday shoot ?
Another brilliant video. I love the calm and informative style, I could watch these all day. They are inspirational, and make me want to get out with my camera. Thanks a lot
Thank you Anything I make that makes you go out and photograph ... that's the best and the goal.
:-)
Hi Thorsten, I got this lens today and like you said, it is a dream in haptik and optik- my take with me everyday- good light 4U- merry merry Philip
Another great video my friend. I guess I'm going to have to join another workshop so I can borrow it for the day. Best to your lovely bride and Robin Isabella
Would love to have you back :-)
This was very useful for me. I will aim for the regular version with the built-in hood, more modern design. As much as I love this old design, I will opt for the more practical hood, filter size, and focus tab. Form follows function.
I like the objective criticism of the design. It is difficult to find that when people have a dedication to the money that they have spent. I find it almost impossible to find objective criticism of Fujifilm for example.
Although, I suppose if you would like to retain resale collectors value of the lens, then punching the lens hood off is not the optimum method. haha
Ha ha, yes the hood had dents rom the first time, and now even more. So it's not a collectors item anymore :-)
I generally never think in resale value, and I tend to keep 90% of my stuff anyways.
Hi Thorsten, I've been following your website for a while. I'm a big fan of your work and it's great to see you starting making videos!
I have a question. You recommended using Leica lenses wide open. What tips can you give for nailing the focus in a street shooting setting? I found it quite difficult to focus with a summicron 50 especially when I'm trying to move through a crowd with people walking towards me. I can't imagine how difficult it would be with a noctilux 50!
Generally, I focus and wait for people to walk into it. Then I take 2-3 photos and usually one of them nail it.
Trying to follow-focus on walking persons usually result that they are 1 feet closer when the shutter is released (because of the short delay). Very little change of getting follow-focus right.
I have the "regular" 50/1.4 ASPH and love it so much. I find that it gives a vivid color rendition, kind of Zeiss-like warm look. At F/2.0 it's as sharp as a pre-APO summicron. Altogether a great lens and along with the 35/1.4 and 90/2.0 constitute a killer system that I like to carry with me most of the time.
BTW, I wish you'd do a video on what is your take on the Tri-Elmer lenses?
The tri-elmar lenses are amazing engineering, but f/4 is not me
Cool review, I can tell you have a wealth of knowledge about lens and photography. Can you say if this lens fits Fuji mount without adapter.
Thank you. You would need an adapter to fit it onto the Fuji, and Fuji makes one themself; and several third party "china adapters" exist on eBay and elsewhere.
Someone I met was a leica m6 user and for close ups he used a 35mm lens which now must be over 60 years old but had 49 iris blades. Any idea of the name of this lens?
Don't know that one.
theres an old e43 filter the "slim" type that u can find, its quite rare, but this will fit the lens hood once attached.
Yes, it exist. But hard to get.
Hi is the NOCTILUX-M 50 F/1.2 ASPH is better than the SUMMILUX-M 50MM F/1.4 ASPH ? Any advantages of the Summilux ?
Thanks Thorston for the honest review, I'll check out your article. I use the non limited edition 50mm f1.4 summilux almost everyday (on a canon m5, don't laugh!). The modern design is very practical with the pull out lens hood, finger tab for focus and lighter weight. You may want to get that one for everyday use and save the limited edition for resale once its appreciated substantially.
I'm curious if you could do an article regarding how differently you use the noctilux vs the summilux 50mm. Also what do you think of the new SL body for the noctilux. Thanks!
Thanks for the review Thorsrten - the way you demonstrated the design flaw of the lens hood - was dramatic and perfect.
I will get around comparing those two lenses more in some months.
The Noctilux and SL works really well together, but wait some weeks till we see what else is coming. The Noctilux is made for Leica M, so that's where it usually sits the best in terms of balance and all :-)
Hi Thorsten, I like the brown color strap very much! Mind to tell where did you bought that? Love all your videos!
Have a look at all the straps and who makes them here:
www.overgaard.dk/Leica-M-Type-240-aka-Leica-M10-digital-rangefinder-camera-page-34-sexy-stuff-for-the-worlds-most-sexy-camera.html
Have you tried any Voigtlander lenses? Any opinion about those?
Never felt tempted so tried very few for a very short time. I haven't even gotten around to try all the Leica lenses.
It made me laugh when the hood flew off and then you just continued so nonchalantly as if nothing had happened.
yes. I love that you are not over protective/fussy about your kit, despite being someone who is clearly appreciative of their industrial design. I've seen this in your videos as well. You appreciate them as tools and allow them to age and scuff, and they do so beautifully.
Yes
I have the regular 50mm Summilux ASPH and it is my favorite lens and the best lens I've ever used. I can't imagine ever selling it. I'm curious if the 35mm Summilux ASPH FLE is also considered an APO?
No, the 35mm is not considered an APO.
APO is usually for tele lenses, so that's why the lens designer Peter Karbe didn't want to call it an APO lens. With the 50mm APO f/2.0 however they went full out and also added APO to the name. So who knows what will happen in the future; maybe wide angle APO lenses as well..?
Amazing video Thorsten! I'm curious about your thoughts on the Leica Summarit f/1.5, I got mine in pretty good shape and it has a lovely glow!
Thank you. Not much thought about the f/1.5 as I only used it once or twice. It has a good reputation for portraits and I some times look at getting one. Maybe one day..!
I love your videos, looking forward to more! Just curious, what camera are you using to record your videos?
Thank you. Dare who does the video part of it uses a Canon CX100 as main camera and Fuji A7II
Do you mean the Canon XC10 or C100?
C100, sorry
Hello Thorsten. What nd filter will fit if I want to use the hood? I cant seem to find if the b+w will fit. Which model xspro? No 43mm breakthrough available.
If you decided to sell your noct 50 I wish you tell me.ü
Thanks.
I subscribed ages ago - How do I get my free eBook? Cheers, David Myers
What lens does Thorsten says he uses often?
What is your experience with Leica CLA service?
Hi Thorsten!
I thoroughly enjoyed this video and have learnt some great tips from you to improve my photography.
I would appreciate your advice on my current situation.
I have had a Nikon DSLR camera for 3 years now and it has been my first expensive camera that I have used for some more serious photography than just taking casual shots with an iPhone for example. The camera is getting a little old now and I have my sights on something new. One of my relatives is a representative for Leica and solely shoots with Leica, recommending it to me. I consider myself inexperienced but keen to learn about photography and see Leica as a good option. Personally I prefer the feel and look of DSLR cameras. I can see that you prefer to shoot with Leica's "M" series, however the price tag might be way too much for me. I am looking for a full frame sensor camera. Do you have any suggestions? Your advice would be much appreciated.
Depends on what you want to do. dSLR are big (huge compared to Leica M). I like the pro Nikons but can't walk around with them.
The Leica M9 is a good intro full-frame that can be gotten for around $2,500 second-hand (plus a lens $500 and up). I'm putting my Leica M9 review up within the next week.
Else, if you want small portable, there's quite a few mirrorless around from Fuji, Olympus and all now.
Leica SL is a "dSLR without a mirror" but that's rather new and getting into that for less than 10,000 with just one zoom is not possible yet.
Another option is to look at Leica R lenses that has been fitted for Nikon. Those exist, just as you can change Leica R lens to fit Nikon. Leica R was made for the Leica R system, Leica's SLR system that also featured a digital back. Great Leica lenses, and they make a Nikon camera sing :-)
Hi Thorsten, may I know the reason why you send back your 50mm APO? I always intrigue by that lens but haven't get the chance to get my hands on. Thanks!
I didn't send it back to Leica. I sent it to the factory that makes my ventilated lens shades so we could test them.
At first I thought dropping almost $4000 on a lens is outrageous but I now I'm thinking that's a good bit of business if you get to use it for a few years then double your money!
Usually they don't drop a lot in price, and some actually goes up. Very unusual in the camera business, but that's how it is with Leica M lenses
great info, thanks
what do you think of the Ricoh GR?
I don't think much of it yet. One was supposed to arrive but never did. Some times things happen for a reason, I believe.
another great video
Thank you!
50 summilux or 50 noct 0.95? If im saving for one which one should i buy to support my savings for 28 lux?ü
I love the Nocti 0.95 but the Summilux 1.4 is a perfect lens. I think it all comes down to what makes you hearth beat the fastest and not much else. Having both alongside usually - for most people - makes no sense as they are so close in performance and all.
OMG, you are not afraid to pound on the lens shade while being attached to the lens.
It's pretty sturdy and the shade sits pretty loose.
Only just found your channel. Very good stuff. One day i might even be able to afford a leica!!!! 😳😳
Do you still think only 500 were made? I find it odd that they keep being in stock.
Jacob Christiansen I completely agree! Actually I just ordered one it is going to be shipped shortly. Will pair it with the M10 Monochrome. But I asked Leica and they still said there will be 500 only. I think they are producing them in slow batches.
@@ibrahimz There is no way there are 500 of these. How come after 3-4 years these are still in stock (brand new)
@@msamiullah001 cost
nice videos you inspire me
Thank you!
How does this lens compare to the Noctilux .95 and Summicron Aspherical f2.0 for colour rendition and contrast? Also, does it compare favourably with the 50mm Zeiss Sonnar f1.5?
Tear it up, it's paid for. I'm sure the hood is already brassing.
Stay safe.Peace
Thanks.
This is not Limited version, and more than 500 pieces for sure.
www.leicacamerausa.com/50mm-f14-asph-summilux-black-chrome-e43-m.html
Must be a pretty heavy lens, anything limited from Leica is pretty much desirable, there is something different that pretty much towers above the norm. I love that it is made from brass! PS only Thorsten can punch a lens and knock its teeth out, I mean lens hood :-)
Yes, it's on the heavy side, so you have to watch out that it doesn't punch you back!
you bet! Enjoy it!
What lens is he talking about? It begins with a but he seems to mutter
Der skal tryk på 2. stavelse af "photographer".
no it's not 500 limited. It's a scam. This lens is widely available from dealership all over the world. I can get it brand new for less than US $4000 even 7 years after it's released. The value is not going up, rather it's depreciating as a regular lens would be
My own hood is falling at least twice a day!...
Yes, not a great idea. Also extrudes too far out from the lens.
Nice to have in the box. My own design comes out in few days.
Seems you Leica it a lot.
He likes 7Artisans 50mm 1.1 too surprisingly
4:52 You slammed that bitch so hard....
Wondering if that is the same lens? ua-cam.com/video/KLWPIrOlCIQ/v-deo.html
4:50 you don't want to see this. If you read this, you don't want to see this
