As someone who has never played, watched, or cared about soccer, I went to my first MLS game recently and loved it. It's such a great league and the games are so much fun. I was always a hockey fan, but I feel like the NHL continually gets worse, and the MLS doesn't have a lot of the issues I have with other leagues. For example, I love how little ads there are. No commercial breaks or ads on the field, and my home stadium only has one jumbotron. At NHL games, I feel like I'm being assaulted by ads and hardly pay attention to the game play anymore. MLS felt so much more pure and down to earth.

I think it’s important to remember the league is less than 30 years old and really can’t be held to the same expectations as the top 5 leagues. Given time it will continue to grow in quality and popularity and I’d guess we will move from a top 15 league to a top 10 within the decade. As far as the pro/rep debate, it’ll be fine with or without it. I don’t see it happening personally but I don’t seeing that being the leagues downfall. Plenty of sports don’t use a pro/real system and as far as the argument that teams don’t have to try and or have nothing to play for without it? I think that completely ignored the fact that any human being wants to win. You play for pride and for trophies and for the supporters and just cause your team doesn’t get relegated it doesn’t mean they aren’t utterly ashamed and embarrassed.

As a European that has soccer as my main sport you shouldn't feel lame when comparing yourself to Europe. I've been bashing on MLS previously when I was younger but I kind of regret it, at least when it comes to the fanbase. US soccer fans does not have the privilige to be born in to cheering for clubs that are more than centuries old etc with set rivlaries and derbys. From what I've seen though, especially Seattle, Portland and Atlanta have a very impressive fanbase for being rather young clubs.
I'm from England and can tell you how far the MLS has come, from where it was in the 90's the growth has been impressive, you're not a Top 10 league (yet) but it's moving in the right direction, and id say its easily Top 20, I'd like to see them up the salary cap to $25m-$30m then the league would be able to attract a couple more players from Europe, Puig signing was a big deal, though I don't think he'd play for Barca, (Gavi and Pedri are both better, not that Puig is bad, but the other two are exceptional talents) he'd probably have gone to another decent sized European club, but I agree the MLS is currently a very fun league to watch
A Mexican man told me that he believes the MLS has surpassed the Liga MX. infrastructure, player development among other things has helped our league to grow. My friend also states that the foreign players coming here to retire has been a great way to further our player development!
There's still a few more major markets that are yet to be tapped via expansion, but along with that, I think we really do need to lean into the true-derby rivalry type of situation. We need more of these rivalries that both fan bases can go to in large numbers. I do realize we still need to get Phoenix into the league, Las Vegas would be a pretty smart move, San Diego is a confirmed add and Sacramento probably needs to come in as well. That's just based on additional geographic coverage and media markets. I do think, however, that we need to keep an eye out for expansion opportunities that are very close to an existing team. Those are valuable. I'm looking at San Antonio. Texas is big enough to have 4 teams instead of 3, and San Antonio vs Austin would absolutely be the next big thing. That's-a spi-cy match-up.
Totally agree about MLS making 4th of July a thing. Especially since the English invented the sport and we beat the English in the American Revolution, it seems appropriate...LOL!
MLS as we know it cannot become or rival the influence of the European top 5. but that’s OK the league was never designed to become the best in the world. it was designed to create an environment that would foster the domestic growth of the sport.
I was a season ticket holder 1st 5 seasons of the league for the MetroStars. For those of you younger folks, this league is unrecognizable today in a great way. The quality was very below par and the atmosphere was hit or miss. Enjoy this and it’s just going to keep getting better.
Agreed, MLS is def growing and that can only help footy in this country. Just a couple of things - Idk if Apple TV is all that great (based on reviews of Season Pass but thats to each their own pretty much). They could be great over time - regaeding Riqui Puig, it was more so Barcelona no longer wanting him than him no longer wanting to play for Barcelona
Yea but that doesn’t fit this dudes narrative so you’re wrong. The mls is gonna be just as good as the premier league. Just you watch. Honestly though, jfc one kid comes here from Barca and everyone starts comparing apples to oranges. Not you, but everyone else in the comment section is delusional.
Even as an American, the match times combined with the time zones are a problem sometimes. There are days that I don't want to have to stay up till midnight to finish a game, and I really wish there were more afternoon games.
They said the very same in the 1970s when Pele came to the old NASL, many other big names followed ( as we see even now), and stadiums were packed…. But then it all ended when the league went under!…. I don’t buy into this hype, it’s only one match, and most MLS teams are in the red and there is only so much money they will stand to lose!
@@Slo-ryde MLS was close to folding two decades ago, they learned from both the Mistakes of their own making and the NASL. Today's league is far more sustainable, but if anything they might be too conservative. Playing it safe when they should be striking while the iron is hot.
@@eatYoself they are more sustainable because they expanded a lot in the past 10 years, and collected very big franchise fees that they use to hold up weaker teams…but MLS can only expand so much and other sources if revenues are needed. So far, they don’t have any cable contracts because the ratings have been low and so they don’t have many sponsors. I don’t see appleTV as a solution, but it’s better than nothing for them. Hopefully, the coming of Messi can push the league to the next level, if he can last 3 or 4 years playing great soccer!… the flip side is that good players ( young or old) cost money, and most teams are losing money ( they say)….. even Garber knows that the MLS cannot operate another 15 -20 years at a loss, but by that time, I am sure he will be retired!
@@Slo-ryde I think you're not giving the Apple TV deal enough credit and overvaluing network broadcast. The advantage of Network broadcast only happens with massive games which can draw a huge audience due to easy access, but the world we live in now is all about streaming. I can't think of anything other than news and sports that gets talked about when it comes to network TV, most people will tell you what they're streaming on Netflix, Hulu, HBO whatever is their fancy. MLS is just getting ahead of the curve and you couldn't find a better partner with deep pockets like Apple. They got billions they're sitting on doing nothing, they'll continue to invest if they can make it impactful. Also the league brings in just over 1.5bn in revenue from its operations that doesn't include what it's selling to Europe in terms of players. Most people aren't aware of the youth academy situation, but MLS youth academies are no joke and in my estimation will be a major money maker in the near future for MLS. I figure MLS wants the reputation of being a selling league where they get enough eyes on their younger product in an attack driven league to drive up their valuation and bank on it. MLS is fine and on the right path. Don't underestimate an American's ability to make money.
It is doing great. I still think it can be better with relegation and without the salary cap. The other thing that would make it improve is the academies. Some academies (Philly may be the best) are ran very well; but some are so bad they don’t even bring in their own athletes (Dynamos). So there is a lot of places where they can improve.
It’ll never happen until we can consistently beat ligamx. That should be our number one goal, and this years leagues cup is showing we still have a ways to go. We need to be the best in the region before we can talk about global relevancy
I appreciate your enthusiasm, but there are a few points in which you are mistaken, particularly regarding Puig. He did not opt for MLS over Barca; rather, he was not deemed skilled enough to play. Nevertheless, he is an excellent product of La Masia
That is what I thought….since most of the best US players are based in Europe, why the hell would Puig prefer playing in the MLS over LIGA?… what you said makes sense, and if the kid impresses people, he will be on a plane back to Europe the next season!
It's always going to be so difficult for MLS teams to attract the world best players in their prime. This is because the pinnacle of club football, the highest standard and most prestigious competition is the European Champions League. The only way US teams will attract genuine world class players is if a new world league becomes so popular and overtakes the Champions League or if MLS teams are some how invited to play in the European Champions League.
What mainly matters is money. That’s why players started to make European competitions entertaining. South American and players from other continents started moving to Europe for the money starting in the 90s. Then from there the champions league became big because all the best players in the world were now there. Before this the intercontinental one match game between South America and Europe was mainly won by South American clubs. So money comes first to attract players and after that the prestigious tournament comes
USA sports teams are highly valuable because of lack of relegations and the league has a draft system Ex. If you're a billionaire and you wanted to buy a sports team. You've probably looking for a losing team because you can assume it's cheap... If the league has a relegations like the rest of the world. You can buy it in a cheap price but if you're buying a mediocre American sports team with a draft system.. you have to spend billions in purchasing it Because having a closed league and draft system makes the losing team have a greater chance of having the best young prospect on your team which also increase the valuation of the team Plus. Sports stars are more likely to sign in a mediocre American sports team than Sports stars signing in a mediocre European sports team at risk of being relegated For example. I can assure you Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe will never sign to any football clubs that is atrisk of being a relegated Just imagine. You're a superstar and you're playing in the division 2
It’s a joke to think that most American fans…. Will spend time and money to watch a team play in a relegation league!…. At least Garber is smart enough to know it.
MLS isn’t going to be on par with the top 5 leagues ever with the current system. They have improved but are moving to slowly. The only way players are going to go to MLS is if they are offered more money. They need to either expand the dp slots to at least 6 or 7 or just get rid of the rule and create an open market. Usually the best players in top European clubs aren’t even from the same country. If MLS wants to really compete you need the top clubs to be comprised of international stars and not just one or 2. This will only happen with money.
This makes sense if you're not looking closely at the league. MLS youth academies should not be ignored and that's what MLS is truly banking on, when tiki taka was hot a bunch of MLS teams studied la masia and took their youth program seriously. Many of the young players in the USMNT including Giovanni Reyna are products of those systems.
The new broadcasting deal is not doing it for me. Maybe apple Tv is good, I would rather have to pay for espn and watch my local clubs of different sports than having to pay a service for each sports
Bro your comment on Riqui Puig not wanting to play for Barcelona just to come to MLS is laughable. He wasn't getting the playing time at Barça and was probably never going to get more so MLS made him a better offer so he came here but to say he chose MLS over Barcelona is hysterically funny. I'm glad he chose to come here because hopefully some of the young and developing talents in Europe who are not getting playing time will come to the United States and play, making MLS a good place to come not at the end of their careers but at their prime.
MLS is growing, once your homegrown history grows. You will see it as cultural. Watch how hooliganism started in England. You need to focus on your homegrown talent rather than international.
puig came to mls cause he couldn’t make it in europe 😂. i’m the biggest mls and sounders fan but fr it wasn’t his preferred destination i’m sure. but as for leo chu? on the money
Wish whitecaps had a smaller stadium. 16k people show up which is great for a club that have been in the play offs once in history. But BC place is too big
I disagree with you completely, mls isn’t near being a top 5 league in the world. I hate it when other Americans say this, sound so arrogant. How about we focus on being the top league in the region first
As a fan of the worse team in the league , DC United OG from 1996, i can say the league structure sucks, and the fact that we can’t grow top players or have proper budgeting for fields, teams and marketing….MLS is a notch above since it’s hay day. Now with Messi, we can see MLS has a lot to grow from and should take note!
Apple Tv we got the rights to MSL for next to nothing.....A YEAR LATER...Apple TV no one is watching the MSL not even for free on illegal stream sites.
Lol no I love that we have a high profile domestic league now unlike 30 years ago but we need to accept MLS for what it is. It needs to be a G-League type for young Americans with a mix of veteran star players that come over from Europe. We won’t ever have promotion/relegation so it’s basically impossible for this league to compete with the European leagues in that regard. Not to mention the history those teams have. We’ll be playing catch-up basically forever. If the US ever wants to win a World Cup, we need to stop acting like we can copy the European method of doing it and look towards our neighbors in the continent below. Argentina and Brazils domestic league are still some of the best from an international standpoint but they can’t compete with Europe and they know that. So they use their leagues and top teams as development grounds for their star youth players to eventually send to big European clubs, while some veterans stick around and some others come back after “retiring” from their prime. If we don’t do this and start trying to compete with Europe, it’s just gonna leave us with all our top players coming back home, not developing and our national team is gonna be every bit the mess that Mexico currently is. Use the MLS as a feeder for top young American stars to go to the top 5 European leagues so they can develop further, then bring them back home after their prime to help the next generation.
as great as the MLS might be. i dont think that it will match Europes level in less than 25-30 years. not because of the fanbase, community, teams, etc. but because of Europe’s history in the sport. no american (north and south) team will equal the pull teams like Real Madrid, Manchester United, Barcelona, etc. have. plus the Champions League is way to prestigious to compare to the anything in any other continent. hell… i would choose a turkish team over an MLS team just for the chance to play in the Champions League
Dude, Ricky Puig went to MLS because Barcelona told him he had no future there. He didn't decide MLS over Barça... MLS is on the rise for sure but there is a long way to go and many changes to occur.
Where is this money supposed to come from to make MLS into a top league? The Premier League broadcast deal for just the UK is over 20x what MLS has worldwide. I’d like to see them loosen up the DP and U22 player slots but the whole reason MLS did not become another NASL is because of being fiscally responsible.
Contrary to the propaganda… it will take a very long time for the MLS to even come close the main Euro leagues…. The general average attendance is barely 20 k, and most teams are losing money.
Like commented and subscribed. A huge fall for MLS is having teams like the one I follow, the New England Revolution, playing in an empty stadium made for an NFL team while playing on turf. Makes me not want to follow the team TBH.
Alas a lot of delusion in this video. Be excited, for sure. MLS just keeps growing. But it is a specifically American variant on an otherwise unified world system. And that’s ok! Americans need to just enjoy MLS for what it is rather than thinking it will ever be spoken of in the same breath as the other world top leagues. I think most MLS teams would struggle not to be relegated from the English Championship tier.
Lets be realistic riqui Puig did not say fuck barcelona i want to play in the mls he literally had no room in barcelona lets be real and the league is a league of show not a top league mls will never be a top 5 league unless they buy young talent not old players about to retire
And you do not name Messi??? The number one reason MLS is waking up again??? You don't understand football kido. En tus sueños MLS es la quinta liga más poderosa del mundo😂
The MLS was always awake. It's just football fans who barely woke up. I'm tired of this glazing. Messi is doing NOTHING to the MLS but people are acting like he's doing everything for the league. La MLS siempre estuvo despierta. Son sólo los aficionados al fútbol los que apenas se han despertado. Estoy cansado de este vidriado. Messi no le está haciendo NADA a la MLS, pero la gente actúa como si estuviera haciendo todo por la liga.
What is even worse is that there are a few city teams that do draw big crowds ( Seattle), which skews the average for the rest of the league to be higher than what it actually is!
I think you’re overreaching with a lot of these points but the league is growing. First off, Puig coming to the MLS isn’t really as big as it seems because the main reasons were that he wasn’t getting playing time at Barca and probably didn’t have offers that he really wanted in Europe. Secondly, the MLS has “good goals” because the defense is still horrible to the point where people made a name “MLS Weekly Banger” for it. Lastly, top 5 is a HUGE reach but if the league keeps growing and actually improves then a top 20 or MAYBE a top 15 is possible in terms of competitiveness.
Keep pushing brother, disagree though, MLS been on the "rise" since I was in primary school (5-11 age group) . Soccer as they say in the US simply sucks, gotta toss that playoff system, it's the least they could do if they don't want to boot out the league with relegation
I agree with the pro/rel but to scrap the playoff system doesn’t seem to work it is uniquely American and something we should enjoy, maybe minimize the teams so that they the supporters shield means more.
The more you try to European-ize the sport, the worse things will be. It’s bad enough we have to put up with tie games…. At least Garber is smart enough to know it.

Mexicans are very passionate in their language, culture, music, food & they love Mexican style music 🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🎤🎤🎤
Eh, that comes with time, don't worry. You don't need to force it. Sooner or later it'll happen from cockyness and disrespect
San Antonio fc got relegated unfortunately, they play with El Paso and other border clubs in the lower league now
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Add Detroit to that list. One of the largest media markets without a team
I’ve been to 40+ games at Subaru park, the atmosphere is crazy. The union only exist Becuase of the fans and it’s crazy how they are expanding
I am From Indonesian ..
NoW ,I LoVe MLS ..
Being on apple tv is terrible for the growth
I was a season ticket holder 1st 5 seasons of the league for the MetroStars. For those of you younger folks, this league is unrecognizable today in a great way. The quality was very below par and the atmosphere was hit or miss. Enjoy this and it’s just going to keep getting better.
Fun Times would love to see a Clint Mathis playing in this current version of MLS
Agreed, MLS is def growing and that can only help footy in this country. Just a couple of things
- Idk if Apple TV is all that great (based on reviews of Season Pass but thats to each their own pretty much). They could be great over time
- regaeding Riqui Puig, it was more so Barcelona no longer wanting him than him no longer wanting to play for Barcelona
You just made me remember to cancel my free subscription before I got charged.
Footy? Are you another Aussie?
The mls will never be as big as other leagues without relegation and promotion
My biggest wish if for MLS to gave a relegation system. Even if it's just 1 team going down...
There is no need for relegation
@@mrepix8287you THINK you don't need it...
You don’t need relegation in a league that has a playoff system for its championship…. Only the better teams will qualify!
Best rivalry has to be Toronto vs Montreal but its great for the MLS to have proper rivalries
Hopefully this begins the trend of more MLS rivalries having 3 matchups per year: 1 home, 1 away, and 1 neutral site
great video man
Excellent video
Keep up the good work
Hope ur channel grows my guy
as a european, the biggest problem the MLS faces is time zones and match days. nobody is watching at 1am on a sunday night.
Even as an American, the match times combined with the time zones are a problem sometimes. There are days that I don't want to have to stay up till midnight to finish a game, and I really wish there were more afternoon games.
For you and Europe.
@@GuloGulo420 the league won’t grow without europe buddy.
that is true, thats why I can only watch in the Summer mostly
I think ten years from now we could be a top five league
Showing the dallas fans for "Texas fans" disrespected me 😂only noticed this on my 2nd watch
Austin rules tejas 💚🖤
I love how Pele improved the footballing level in the US and Canada (for the women’s division, of course).
MLS is growing but it is not becoming a top 5 league any time soon if it's still struggling to win the CCL.
Facts.
The main idea is growth relative to, and only to, itself as a league. 5 years ago, liga MX would’ve won at least 90% of these matches.
Best MLS match is Zlatan's debut and it ain't even close
I like how much credit he gave messi...
😂😅
Facts!
Subbed!
How soon do you think MLS can become a top 5 league... 2030? 🤔
I hope chicago fire fc get things together
Have to play la libertadores
20 years from now i see a world league forming where franchisese will be in Europe, N/S America and Asia
no the world league will be Amazing international league.
Man, get the promotion and relegation system. US footy is a joke without it.
USA sports teams are highly valuable because of lack of relegations and the league has a draft system
Ex. If you're a billionaire and you wanted to buy a sports team. You've probably looking for a losing team because you can assume it's cheap...
If the league has a relegations like the rest of the world. You can buy it in a cheap price
but if you're buying a mediocre American sports team with a draft system.. you have to spend billions in purchasing it
Because having a closed league and draft system makes the losing team have a greater chance of having the best young prospect on your team which also increase the valuation of the team
Plus. Sports stars are more likely to sign in a mediocre American sports team than Sports stars signing in a mediocre European sports team at risk of being relegated
For example. I can assure you Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe will never sign to any football clubs that is atrisk of being a relegated
Just imagine.
Most teams in the MLS are losing money!
I'm here after messi joining inter Miami.
It's been on the rise since Beckham, mate😅👍

Ugh, I hate your channel name, but good video.
P.S. I was there. Right in the middle of the LAFC Supporters Section.
Lol gotta live into the stereotypes
El Traffico i'm so dead.
The new broadcasting deal is not doing it for me. Maybe apple Tv is good, I would rather have to pay for espn and watch my local clubs of different sports than having to pay a service for each sports
yeah but its not going to change soon, I think the deal is for 10 years
Bro your comment on Riqui Puig not wanting to play for Barcelona just to come to MLS is laughable.
Well said… !
If he didn't make it at Barcelona, The next step isn't immediately MLS. He could have played in other European leagues.
Wish whitecaps had a smaller stadium. 16k people show up which is great for a club that have been in the play offs once in history. But BC place is too big
San Diego FC
I disagree with you completely, mls isn’t near being a top 5 league in the world. I hate it when other Americans say this, sound so arrogant. How about we focus on being the top league in the region first
When did he ever say that?
This comment offend me a lot. That's a penalty for Hormonel Tronconel Mensso Fressi
I don't wanna play Barcelona because I can't play for Barcelona.
That is basically what the truth is… otherwise Puig would be out of his mind to prefer MLS over LIGA!
Dnq football on youtube.
Lol no
I love that we have a high profile domestic league now unlike 30 years ago but we need to accept MLS for what it is.
MLS wasn't getting partnership with AppleTv if it wasn't for Messi... Honestly
You got it backwards, it was the partnership with Apple that helped Miami to make the deal for Messi to come to MLS.
Portland vs Sounders > LAFC vs Galaxy
Dude, Ricky Puig went to MLS because Barcelona told him he had no future there. He didn't decide MLS over Barça... MLS is on the rise for sure but there is a long way to go and many changes to occur.
Ease off the herb, man. Portland-Seattle is easily a better rivalry.
Mls being on apple tv and not fox limits the games by alot
📉
Where is this money supposed to come from to make MLS into a top league? The Premier League broadcast deal for just the UK is over 20x what MLS has worldwide. I’d like to see them loosen up the DP and U22 player slots but the whole reason MLS did not become another NASL is because of being fiscally responsible.
Contrary to the propaganda… it will take a very long time for the MLS to even come close the main Euro leagues…. The general average attendance is barely 20 k, and most teams are losing money.
The MLS will give the NFL a run for it's money and now nobody gives a shit about basebball.
El tráfico is NOT the best rivalry. You are just wrong. The best rivalry in MLS is the Sounders V Timbers.
NYCFC vs Re bulls in the big stage.

Like commented and subscribed. A huge fall for MLS is having teams like the one I follow, the New England Revolution, playing in an empty stadium made for an NFL team while playing on turf. Makes me not want to follow the team TBH.
NE plays in front of 25-30k. That's a large crowd. You clearly haven't watched in years. Also, is atmosphere your #1 requirement???
@@GuloGulo420NE as a team is looking great this year and so are the crowds and attendance. Great stuff for them.
MLS will never be at the level of europe. not without relegation. is still fun to watch, but is not La Liga, not even close lol
Riqui Puge 😂
Alas a lot of delusion in this video. Be excited, for sure. MLS just keeps growing. But it is a specifically American variant on an otherwise unified world system. And that’s ok! Americans need to just enjoy MLS for what it is rather than thinking it will ever be spoken of in the same breath as the other world top leagues. I think most MLS teams would struggle not to be relegated from the English Championship tier.
U gotta work on ur framing bro, ur forehead is getting cut off
Lets be realistic riqui Puig did not say fuck barcelona i want to play in the mls he literally had no room in barcelona lets be real and the league is a league of show not a top league mls will never be a top 5 league unless they buy young talent not old players about to retire
They buy ton of young talent tard
And you do not name Messi??? The number one reason MLS is waking up again??? You don't understand football kido. En tus sueños MLS es la quinta liga más poderosa del mundo😂
Did you check when this video was uploaded?
The MLS was always awake. It's just football fans who barely woke up. I'm tired of this glazing. Messi is doing NOTHING to the MLS but people are acting like he's doing everything for the league.
La MLS siempre estuvo despierta. Son sólo los aficionados al fútbol los que apenas se han despertado. Estoy cansado de este vidriado. Messi no le está haciendo NADA a la MLS, pero la gente actúa como si estuviera haciendo todo por la liga.
It'd be cool if you would call it "football", you know.
I looked up the average MLS attendance and its only around 20000 not that impressive a long way to go
What is even worse is that there are a few city teams that do draw big crowds ( Seattle), which skews the average for the rest of the league to be higher than what it actually is!
Unless it's my club I don't follow the rest of a league.
Look at hell is real
I think you’re overreaching with a lot of these points but the league is growing. First off, Puig coming to the MLS isn’t really as big as it seems because the main reasons were that he wasn’t getting playing time at Barca and probably didn’t have offers that he really wanted in Europe. Secondly, the MLS has “good goals” because the defense is still horrible to the point where people made a name “MLS Weekly Banger” for it. Lastly, top 5 is a HUGE reach but if the league keeps growing and actually improves then a top 20 or MAYBE a top 15 is possible in terms of competitiveness.
MLS is already a top 20 league
@@mrepix8287 if you're talking about money and popularity then yes, but competitiveness wise they are far from top 20
And its best players lose 5-0 to Arsenal’s subs

Tell me more about the Indian Super League... 😂
It's a nursing home for great players
Keep pushing brother, disagree though, MLS been on the "rise" since I was in primary school (5-11 age group) . Soccer as they say in the US simply sucks, gotta toss that playoff system, it's the least they could do if they don't want to boot out the league with relegation
no american would watch at american sports league without playoffs
I agree with the pro/rel but to scrap the playoff system doesn’t seem to work it is uniquely American and something we should enjoy, maybe minimize the teams so that they the supporters shield means more.
@@Fuzzhead392 many leagues in Europe have play-offs but not with elimination matches
