I did it Pam this weekend I went to Lowe's and got 1 10ft 3/4" PVC pipe and a 10ft 1/2" PVC pipe and made me 2 different stand. I made 2 12x 12 frames from the 3/4 and 1/2" pipe. With the remaining pipe from both sizes I made 6" to make a 6x6 frame for my smaller work. I would like to thank you for your video on showing us how. It saved me a lot of money from buying a wood lap frame. And my Q snap clamps fit both frames. I also tried just putting the frame together without the base to make just the frame part and it works just like a Q snap. I cant just can't up a picture on UA-cam. To show you. Thanks again Pam
i just made a six inch version this afternoon! it was about $15 for all the materials from home depot, but i bought two-foot lengths of 1/2 inch pvc instead of one big one, which would have been cheaper. it only took about five minutes to cut it all with a pex cutter and get it put together! thank you so much for the tutorial!!
Thank you for the awesome video! I just went to my local hardware store and discovered I can get a 20 foot section of 3/4" of pvc for less than the cost of a 10 ft section. About 15% less. So now I have enough to make two maybe three 8 x 8 frames. Before the day is over I will have one for me and one for my wife. Thank you! GREAT video.
I ran across this video by chance. I new had had to make one. I got the pieces from the hardware store (I also have a PVC cutter, which makes it so much faster to make) and made my self one. I make one that is 8 wide by 11 tall and them came back and cut me a couple of other sizes so depending on the project, I should have the right size. I have been using the frame for almost a week and have to say that I LOVE it. it has great balance and not heavy. It is easy to turn to start/end thread. Thank you so much for putting this tutorial up. My daughter wants one and so does a good friend of mine. I am sure I will make me a couple more...because after all who has just one project going at a time...LOL!!
I am a very happy stitcher, my husband made me one today it cost 6.02 he did end up using the 1/2 inch piping. Thankfully a young man working in Lowes even cut the piping !
I just came back to cross stitch after 14-20 years and was finding some things difficult... For instance, holding a q snap for extended time and my vision had changed. So we made your frame which was very simple thanks to your video but I still had some problems with it and had to adjust some of the measurements. I kept the original pieces but it cut down the side pieces to, that brings my stitching area closer to me so I can see the holes better. Also a stitch in bed and the pieces for the bends were also too long,so I cut them in half. This all brings the entire thing closer to me and easier to work with the way I like to work. I was happy to find that either Amazon had the clamps to fit on the three-quarter inch piping we bought because, for some reason, we got the schedule 40 so it was bigger around and my q snap clamps wouldn't work. Now I have a mighty sturdy adjustable stand for relatively cheap. Thanks again!!!
Thanks for the tutorial. I just finished my first one with the help of my son. It was really quite easy, even if I had to measure and cut all the pieces, it didn't take me more than 45 minutes altogether! Now, to try it out...
thank you very much for the diamiter of the pipe. My husband is a plumber so he works with this pipe all the time. If anyone knows a plumber they can probably get the pipe for next to nothing. I have seen the video where the lady said she used half inch diameter pipe and I knew right away umm nope that can't be right lol. My husband has been wanting to know exactly what diamiter of pipe to get to make me one. He didn't want to take a q snap clip in the hardware store with him lol.
+Sharleen Bielman glad my video helped. Some places measure the diameter by the outside of the pipe and some measure based on the interior of the hole. Here in Newfoundland its by the interior so 1\4 inch.
here in the US it is the interier as well. This is because of plumbing reasons lol. My husband is a journeyman plumber and had to go to 4 years of college to get his license lol. Not all states are that way though. The state that we live in is very strict about plumbing code because it is for the safety and health of people who use the plumbing which is everyone lol.
Hi Pam, I did my lap stand exactly as yours, its awesome, I use 1/2 inch in diameter, I found it much better to handle it. I even made 2 more sides pipes shorter for small work. thanks so much, spend less than $7, $6.25 to be exact at home depot, there are two kind of 1/2 inch pipe, I bought the thinner one. "I forgot that I recommend to buy two 5 feet long pvc pipes, also included in the price".

I made the stand today so ready to try it out thank you so much I think I am really going to like it. I had bought a floor stand for the q-snap spend little over 50 and do not like it but I think this is going to really get me stitching more since I want to try parking and to hand stitching so many someday I can get one of my haeds done.

Thank you for making this video. I was able to repurpose some PVC pipes that I had made for a backdrop stand into a lap frame with extra to make different sizes if I want.
Someone made of already commented on this but...if you have a knock off q snap and want to use them in the stand, the tubes ARE 1/2". I guess the real q snaps are really a 3/4". I bought 3. 10'. 3/4 pipe, economy bag of 90 degree angel, 2 45's, 4 T pieces (not sure why 4 only need 2). This will yield stand 8x10, 10x10,11x17,12x12,10x12 and 17x17. I paid right at $27.00. Your instructions are very clear and I like how well you explain everything. Great job! I now have my lap stand assembled and am excited to use it! I have cross stitched years ago and now with UA-cam and your channel I can't believe how much I still have to learn! I usually do small projects so that I can get them done. My biggest project was 8" x 11 1/8" (Angel of God prayer with a little girl kneeling and praying by her bed) which was for my Goddaughter. I would like to do more large projects. Hi Michella, Thank you so much for watching my videos. Happy to hear you like the lapstand. ☺ I don't have any videos at the moment on how I start a piece. If it's one of my large full coverage pieces I typically just start in the top left corner allowing 2-3 inches on top and in from the side. I typically cut my fabrics with about 3 inches to spare around all 4 sides. That's more then enough for framing.

It makes more sense to start at the top left corner and work your way down rather than starting in the middle. I am used to starting in the middle, as most of the projects I have done are small. However, I did start the Angel of God Prayer project in the middle. I wish I would of thought of starting at the top left corner. I think it would also help me count more accurately than starting in the middle. It can get confusing sometimes! Oh well, live and learn! Also thank you for the guide on how much fabric to leave around your project. Anyway thank you again for your reply!

great vids i love them, i made one similar also using pvc pipes, i did not had to buy them just got them at work:), yes there are also construction workers ( im problably the only one) who like to cross stitch.
Mark that's awesome that you could source the stuff at work. And that's one thing I love about cross stitch, it has no boundaries in regards to who can enjoy this fantastic hobby.
Well, i got all my 3/4 inch pvc and elbows. Had my brother cut it, and I put it all together and looks good now i have to make the Q snaps from pvc. i payed $6.79 for all the parts at my local MENARDS and they have that 11% going on also
Someone posted her husband’s pvc pipe lap stand. I lost the directions….😢thank you so much for this. Now all I have to figure out is how to cut the pipe. Hopefully you will address this in the video…. The 45 degree pieces are called elbows.
Excellent tutorial Pam! I might have to look at making one of those for my daughter and throwing away the horrible old stand she's using! Hubbie said Mineral Turpentine or Methylated Spirits should remove the writing from the pipes... If you wanted to get rid of it. Happy stitching 😉 xx
I made one a few months back. My design is just slightly different though. I also used 1/2 inch pvc. Might have to try the 3/4 inch. I have. Problem with tension.

great vids i love them, i made one similar also using pvc pipes, i did not had to buy them just got them at work:), yes there are also construction workers ( im problably the only one) who like to cross stitch.
Mark that's awesome that you could source the stuff at work. And that's one thing I love about cross stitch, it has no boundaries in regards to who can enjoy this fantastic hobby.

Well, i got all my 3/4 inch pvc and elbows. Had my brother cut it, and I put it all together and looks good now i have to make the Q snaps from pvc. i payed $6.79 for all the parts at my local MENARDS and they have that 11% going on also

Nice video. I used acetone to remove the markings on the PVC.

Just make sure you take your Q-snap clamp to the hardware store to ensure a proper fit. :) Happy stitching.
Someone posted her husband’s pvc pipe lap stand. I lost the directions….😢thank you so much for this. Now all I have to figure out is how to cut the pipe. Hopefully you will address this in the video….
The 45 degree pieces are called elbows.

I cut prices of 3/4 pvc to replace the q snaps and it worked for me

Hubbie said Mineral Turpentine or Methylated Spirits should remove the writing from the pipes... If you wanted to get rid of it.

+sillyeels I had the same issue but the guy at the store cut a length for me so I had 2 pieces that fit in the car to get it home

I made one a few months back. My design is just slightly different though. I also used 1/2 inch pvc. Might have to try the 3/4 inch. I have. Problem with tension.
Yes I tried my clamp on the 1/2 inch one and it was way too loose.
