It's amazing and ironic to think of all the people who now see this way of life as a dream, yet it's the way people lived forever just a couple of generations ago.

You should smell a certain way, look a certain way, talk a certain way, and don't forget about how you express yourself on social media because everybody expects you to have one. Say the wrong thing and a mob comes after you with the rampant cancel culture. If you can't keep up then you're a "loser". You have escaped the heavy burden and watching eyes (besides this video of course) of the modern era. You have something many of us are too scared to try, but so desire. Those last words of "an open mind to losing everything" is very true, sadly most are too closed in. @@ArsonisticElmo good comment, and i'll add it takes decades of life experience (and beating) to wisen up and realize that how society wants you to live your life is not how you should live it, your life is yours and the earth isn't theirs either. You'll find that after you've exhausted the silly empty goals society falsely glamorizes as "success" you'll discover what really matters is not at all what they prioritize. It's much simpler, it's much more wholesome and humble. You have to accept and see that you're only a temporary traveller through life before you get the answers and the way to live your life correctly. That's why it's mostly people in the second half of their lives who find the way.

I was given the entire contents of a kura storehouse by a neighbour. The chest came from there. One of them - I got 6 in total full of family heirloom things such as kimono, indigo fabrics all brand new and intact as those chests preserve things for eternity! - was dated inside. 1841. Like new inside. Nagamochi. Noone is interested in them in Japan anymore, they are literally left out in the street as garbage. They prefer plastic.

Nice, am doing the same - 250 year old samurai house in Shizuoka. I dont think the beams are bengara added, otherwise it would go matte when mixed with Kakishibu (we are using both in our rennovation for non-visual wood, with only Kakishibu for wood that can be seen, and Coat G for external wood). The previous occupant was a daiku, so I inherited a whole lot of old hand tools. Some of which I am actually using that cant be done by Makita battery tools :)

The only real walls preventing this are restrictive immigration laws and resistance from the local population. Neither of these will be changed by immigration. Low population replacement is occuring because of lack of support and lack of money going to prospective parents. Japan has done virtually nothing to make serious improvements in this area for natives or immigrants alike. The issues here are all self inflicted by poor governance, incompetence and corporate greed. I do not expect this to improve any time soon.

They are 100% light cotten with elastic wast and elastic pant cuffs. I really like them. Made for shorter legs . I wore them in high boots with other tradurional clothes.
I agree with you, growing your own food means there is no need for money and you can be sure what you are eating is healthy and your environment nourishes your soul. Your friend in the UK does not see that working to earn money in order to be able to buy food from the supermarket is depriving him of the sustenances as most food from the supermarket are devoid of nutrients. What a wonderful existence. Question: are there property taxes in Japan and if so, how much? Many times in the US we manage to pay off our homes as we age only to be priced out by high property taxes.
Yep, there are no longer any states in the US that have zero property tax. You will always have to pay the government at least a few thousand a year to own a home/land, which means you never really own anything and cannot really be free. But I suppose that's mostly irrelevant because corporations like BlackRock have purchased almost every open land/home in the US and have manipulated the market so that most people cannot afford anything anyway. Even rent is too expensive these days so we're basically being priced out of living. I'm considering moving to another country like the Philippines because the USA is becoming an unaffordable and terrible place to live.

Country life is not for everyone. My wife and I would rather rent an Airbnb in Tokyo or Osaka any time. Walking is good exercise, we walk to Daiso, Kura Sushi, Gyo Mu Super, Temples and Shrines and subway stations. Not able to read Japanese; no drivers license will ever come my way.
This is the type of foreigner Japan should welcome to help with their dwindling population. He is an asset not a freeloading hinderance, and he seems to respect the culture. Well done.

15 min city is actually not a bad thing. Many people think they will be restricted to city boundaries and cannot travel beyond that 😂

What a wonderful existence. Question: are there property taxes in Japan and if so, how much? Many times in the US we manage to pay off our homes as we age only to be priced out by high property taxes.
Houses are worthless after a while in Japan, only the land is sold. Most people buy land with a house on, demolish it, and build a new one.
Yep, there are no longer any states in the US that have zero property tax. You will always have to pay the government at least a few thousand a year to own a home/land, which means you never really own anything and cannot really be free. But I suppose that's mostly irrelevant because corporations like BlackRock have purchased almost every open land/home in the US and have manipulated the market so that most people cannot afford anything anyway. Even rent is too expensive these days so we're basically being priced out of living. I'm considering moving to another country like the Philippines because the USA is becoming an unaffordable and terrible place to live.

Country life is not for everyone. My wife and I would rather rent an Airbnb in Tokyo or Osaka any time. Walking is good exercise, we walk to Daiso, Kura Sushi, Gyo Mu Super, Temples and Shrines and subway stations. Not able to read Japanese; no drivers license will ever come my way.
This is the type of foreigner Japan should welcome to help with their dwindling population. He is an asset not a freeloading hinderance, and he seems to respect the culture. Well done.

My mother's birthplace was also a house with a thatched roof until the first year of junior high school. I feel that today's Japan has become too convenient because the vestiges of the past have disappeared.
