    Excellent review!!! This format should set a new standard for all youtube celebrity wannabes.
    Short - concise and pertainent.
    No crappy music, and you stuck only to those things which are relevant, without unnecessary fluff.
    And, you did it without redundancy.
    Can't improve on that!
    Kudos my friend!

    Great video! OK saying that you used the 18650 and did the test and get 700 mah , but the said 18650 didn't have any information written on it, how can you tell the overall mah of the battery? Is it a 1500, 2200 mah battery?

    Great review.. How long did the test run for? If the resistance were increased, would that cut the test time?

    • @IntoxicatedDriver
      @IntoxicatedDriver 5 років тому

      No, the opposite. Smaller resistance results in higher discharge current, draining the cell more quickly.

    +EHobby Guy, thanks for this helpful video. I have one of these and have been using it extensively. However, I found another video that calls its accuracy into question. You said in this video around 7:25 that these results were "consistent" with the previous device, but in that video battery #1 did 444 mAh and battery #2 did only 163 mAh, so I'm a bit confused. Do you have a sense of how accurate your results were with this module, in terms of absolute accuracy?

    • @ehobbyguy8980
      @ehobbyguy8980  6 років тому +2

      Thank you for your comment. I did not do any real accuracy measurements on the tester. I am working on a video to build my own battery capacity tester, and use it to compare the 2 testers I reviewed and IT, using the same batteries. When I said the results were consistent with the previous device, I was just recollecting roughly in my head. Again, thank you for watching, I hope this was helpful. I appreciate your feedback!

    Like others said, your video is the best I found about this 18650 capacity tester!! clear and treat about the most important stuffs.
    I mounted 2 ceramic resistors of 10W 100ohm (in parallel), for the testing instead of the 5W provided.
    What do you thing? my testings are going to be accurate?? I'll be using it to test 18650 battery from old laptop pack. thx for any support.

    Gracias excelente demostracion, lo que me ha gustado de este modulo que tambien nos muestra codigos de error en caso algo falla;
    puse una bateria con 2v2 y efectivamente me mostro el mensaje de err2:
    Error Codes
    Err1: Battery voltage greater than 15v.
    Err2: The battery voltage is lower than the specified termination voltage.
    Err3: The battery is unable to withstand the discharge current (too much sag?)
    Err4: The discharge current is >3.1A.

    • @ehobbyguy8980
      @ehobbyguy8980  6 років тому

      Thank you for your comment. There are different recommendations for the current that should be used to test these batteries. The manufacturer is supposed to specify the current. So if you have a spec sheet on the battery it will probably say it there. If it is a more generic battery and no info is available, then a rough rule of thumb is to use 0.2 times the rated capacity. So if you have a battery rated say 2500 mAh, then a good estimate for the current to be used to test it would be 0.2x2500 = 500mA. Since this tester does have a varying current as it discharges use the resistance that would give that current using the nominal voltage of 3.7V, i.e 7.5 ohms. R=V/I --> R = 3.7/7.5 = 493mA. This is just one example. I hope it was helpful. The testing of these batteries is actually quite complex. Thanks again for watching!!

      Lalit Mohan it just a natural reaction of the chemistry involved. I know that’s not a great explanation. I am not really a chemist. It does show that you will get much greater battery capacity with intermittent use because of this phenomenon. Thanks for watching!!

    I have a number of these testers. DO NOT connect in reverse polarity. LOL, yea I tested it. The flipping things have more then doubled in price. Wish they could be employed at higher voltages. You can get around mitigating the Dropping voltage issues by using a CC/CV PSU module as the load.

      Hi Sammy, I am not sure what you are trying to do. The TP4056, depending on which model controls charge and discharge of the 18650 batteries. The tester in this video tests for battery capacity, So if that's what you are trying to do, then great. Again thanks for watching!!

    18650,my battery starts at 3.85, The P voltage is set to 3v, when I press ok it starts. I get .819 amh discharge rate (2 resisters in) BUT the volts says 3.08. It ends quick and I get a battery with .0015 mah. Sometime I get the message Err3 . Help needed. Thanks

    • @ehobbyguy8980
      @ehobbyguy8980  5 років тому

      c bic I would say that you should put the resistors in series to lower the discharge current and it may yield a more accurate result. Putting the resistors in parallel reduces the resistance and increases the current. The older the battery and the more cycles it has gone through reduce its capacity. I hope this was helpful. Thanks for watching!!!

    I used to do big cell tests in data centres. we were using a big heater on wheels with a big rheostat and were expected to adjust the amps we saw on our clamp meter by use of the rheostat as it fell due to the dropping cell volts. Some engineers didn’t bother, as this is the way of the world, so test data from one engineer to another were different. Is this something small battery testing should be employing ? I was told the reason was that the telecoms equipment that uses 48v in data centres was all ways going to pull the same amps but I never believe this theory as if the battery string has a finite capacity the volts and therefore amps were going to drop accordingly as time passed.

    Did you ever check the values the tester measures and calibrate the tester? If you hold down all buttons on power up it goes into calibration mode. I think you are supposed to connect 10V and 200mA to it in two steps (the display goes through "0A0u", "10.0u" and "200A"), but I never did that (and hope I did not mess up the calibration by not connecting anything while going through these steps).

    Testing capacity of SLA or Lead Acid batteries recommends discharging at 1/20 C - one twentieth of battery capacity for 20 hours. Higher makes capacity appear less while less makes capacity appear greater. Since Lead Acid batteries cannot be discharged below 50% in general, this test could only be run for 10 hours and should finish with open circuit voltage of battery at 12.2 approx, or 50% SOC.

      Error codes and their meanings:
      Err1: Battery voltage is above 15V
      Err2: Battery voltage is lower than the termination voltage
      Err3: Battery can not afford to load discharge current or the circuit resistance is too high

    Mine shows 0.4v without having a battery and with the battery it shows less v than what the battery has. The resistors got very hot too.

    Using your fingers for mechanical support of USB socket was still
    necessary with battery 1. However, you didn't show how you fixed the
    socket to the board before inserting the plug for testing battery 2, as
    mechanically arresting the socket didn't seem to have been necessary any
    longer.

    So is it better to test 18650's with 2 or 1 capacitors? Which is more accurate?
    Thank you!

      Martin Viti those are resistors, and it is my opinion that it is better to test with 2 resistors in series. This would result in a higher resistance and therefore a slower discharge. I think that would give a more accurate result. I hope this was helpful. Thanks for watching!!
