NOTE: Both filters should be installed with the arrows pointing down. I noticed that in the video one is wrong. I corrected it in the X but wanted to get on here and make sure you all knew.
Ry the car guy I just checked mine on my 2014 Pro4X. The far right filters arrow was facing down and the left filters arrow was facing up. Were My filters installed incorrectly? Should I switch the one filter so the arrow faces down?
Just asked the same question. I think we both are suffering from a bad install. Have found other articles online that confirm both filters need to point down.
bought an '08 Xterra on the cheap. Mechanically it's in good shape but one of the main reasons it was so cheap is the interior smelled like decaying dog even after having the seats professionally cleaned. Changed these filters (soaked them with spray Febreze first) and now it smells like a freakin' ocean breeze in there. Change your filters!
I didnt even know I had this! I bought my 2005 new and have 95k miles. My filters were equally as filthy; however, i cleaned them and reinstalled as they were in good shape with some banging and brushing. Note that the screw was put in as an option, but my plastic tab broke off, so I added the screw to hold the cover and now all is good. As a side note, I was thinking about selling my 2005 and getting a newer model. I test drove a 2014 and found it to be exactly the same but with a digital audio package. After that eye opener, I decided to invest a $2K or so to modernize and replace a few damaged parts. Thanks Ry for the motivation to restore rather than replace!
Thanks for this video! I bought a well-used 2006 Xterra Off-Road in December 2018. Just changed the cabin filters today after viewing your video. Lots of leaves, dirt, and bugs on the filters.
Bought a fixe year old X this year and just replaced the original cabin filter. It wasn't as bad as the one in your video butt was filled with dust (desert climate). Thanks for posting this one.
THANKS! I just purchased a 2014 Xterra with 55k miles. I removed the filters to check them and they were filthy. Not as bad as yours. Picked up a new set of Wix cabin filters today along with an engine air filter and replaced them all.
Any final concensus on the direction of flow? I replaced mine (07) last year the way I found them with the arrows up. In the majority of debate on other videos is for the arrows to go up? If all the debris however sits on top of the filter, that tells me that the air flow is pulling down thru the filter... so confused :(
Ry, thanks for all your instructional videos. Though on this video lighting was needed to be very clear. It's nice that every job you do, you're explaining your steps. Thank you very much.
Thank you very much - I just went to a local store and made the switch - I broke the piece that I thought would have easily snapped off, but going to try to super glue it a later time - the pressure feels so much better ... My filters were just like yours and maybe a bit worse - now I am hearing a humming sound when on high - off to the next video and more researching - thank you once again
found your blower motor video, and decided to check my filter too.....holy pine needles! lol...definitely sub'd....I have a 2008 Pathfinder, which is basically the same thing.
+nosoupfuru sweet thanks! Yea, blower motor and cabin filter tend to get looked over. Mine was so disgusting that it actually made my truck smell. When I swapped it out the X smelled 10 years newer. Hah!
Just did this on the 05 Xterra I bought second hand. It was gross. It will be nice to finally have some cleaner hand. Thanks for making this video showing me how to do it.
Nice video. i just recently installed for the first time these filters in my 2014 Frontier. Before I installed the new set i opened the hood, turned on the air conditioner and sprayed a disinfectant into the air vents near the wipers for a few seconds. No musty smell anymore.
Any idea how all the debris is getting in there. I just replaced mine and it was worse than that. Lots of large debris that couldn't fit through the filter on the cowl. Thanks for the helpful videos.
The vent is in the cowl between the windshield and the hood. So doing things like parking under trees, mudding, or diving like crazy in sand will add to the problem.
Thanks Ry. I have been having a funny smell when I turn on the AC in my 2013 X. I hope changing these filters takes care of that problem. If not then I will have to investigate further.
+Terry Tuite I had the same problem. It was a musty kind of wet smell. Of course my filters were pretty awful. Hopefully yours wont be so bad. Let me know how it goes!
Just done, thank you for the video. Compared with an Elantra everything is a little more tricky. I was worried to break the left side of the glove compartment.
Do you know how I can get to the housing where that filter sits? I want to replace it because the tan is broken but I have no idea where to start. I’m assuming I have to remove the dash but I’m not sure. Any information, if you have it, would be very helpful.
Hey RY Lovvve your video and your tips about cabin filter I've not chance my cabin since I purchased the car since OCTOBER 2012🙄 . Looking forward touch base with you if you STILL own Nissan Xterra
I do still own it and I make videos every month. Be sure to sub so you can keep up on what I am putting out. I am interested to hear how your cabin filter is. Was it as bad as mine?
lol...i stopped it at 5:30 and was like...umm..that arrows pointing up haha...good thing you caught it! man that is some crazy debris you had on those filters! I have my filters, about to change mine out. Just bought it (2015) at 56k miles. These are cheap enough to just buy a couple sets and do them every 6-12 months.
Help: I have a problem with the heater on my 2009 Xterra, the fan is working fine, but I am not getting any heat, even though the engine is hot. Could it be the hot / cold air diverter on the heater block? If so, how to access it?
Both filters should be installed with the arrows pointing down. I have an instruction sheet that clearly shows this but unfortunately I can't upload/paste it here.
Yikes and mine were even worse, just bought an '05; removed the filters, vacuumed it out, turned the fan in high while spraying FreeBreeze into the filter hole, then installed the new filters, ARROWS POINTING DOWN ⬇ thanks! 👍
NOTE: MY 2001 IS NOT THE SAME. First off, on the 2001, you can’t pop out the glovebox like this video. You need to take the screw out on the top of the glovebox and also the screws on the dashboard and take off the panel with the glovebox in it. It’s not the same as this video. When you get the panel off you will see the blower housing and to the left you will see a box and a place that looks like two slots going vertical one among the other. At this point you think that all you have to do is remove those panels. Trust me, you can’t. They’re fake panels (Yours may not be because someone might have saved you the trouble). If you’re like me you still need to cut around the panel with a knife. Once those two tabs are cut out you can slide the new filters in. Make sure the arrows are pointing away from the blower.
+Ry the car guy yeh your right because sometimes my blower will be loud for the first 5 min.. i wonder if thats why.. ill prob replace it soon . they arnt that much . i think 60 or 80 $
Ry, did you end up fixing it by pointing both arrows up or down, I've watched 2 other videos for the Xterra cabin filter replacement on youtube and one guy said both should point up and the other guy had both pointing down???
On you first filter, you put the air flow indicator arrow down, but on your second filter you said and put the arrow up. This is not correct. They should both be down.
are you sure about this? I just changed mine and the first filter (left) was facing down, the second (right) was facing up. These were clearly the original filters. Reinstalled them the same way I saw them come out. Should I be putting them both facing down?
Sorry to bother you so much. In this video I see next to the filter you just replaced along with it a Black housing that runs all the way to the steering driver's side under the dash. The evaporator in there next to where you just installed that filter. Is there any possible way I can clean the evaporator there. I called an Air Conditioner specialist and he told me the entire system needs to be removed because "its a sealed housing and it's under the dash and needs to be removed to be able to clean the evaporator. He also said that is not worth cleaning it instead replacing it due to the extensive task and to be able to give me a warranty after the job it's performed. I can't believe that a damaged blower filter could cause such a situation. They also said the job its close to a thousand dollars. I am very frustrated. Base on your experience most likely are they telling me the truth?
Well its more about protecting your blower. If all the shit that was in my filters fell into my blower you would be watching a blower motor replacement video not a filter replacement video. :D
Is there a easy way I can clean beyond the filter because rats ate it and I think the evap is dirty dirty and its taking away the capability to cool. I dont know how to clean it there.
I got it out and I cleaned the blower it was clogged with many things the rats dropped in there. The thing is on the left side big plastic housing. I fitted my hand in by the blower hole and I felt all of the evap blades totally clogged. It was like a net of dust and so. That is why it doesn't cool I know. The thing is that I am not sure if I can clean it there. Is it possible? How do I remove the second part...looks kind of intenseto take off..
Indeed I did, the problem is that Iin my Nissan model the ac blower housing is also as well the evaporator housing all in one piece I wonder if I can remove the bottom part without taking the entire system so I can clean the evaporator inside the vehicle.
It’s true. I like to do wacky shit like that for fun. Just kidding. I realized after I made the video and had to go back and correct it. I like your profile pic btw. 🤘🏻

I scented mine with Paul Sebastian.
Where do I find the replacement cabin filters for my 2007 Xterra.
Where do I find the replacement cabin filters for my 2007 Xterra?
You saved me money again so its only right you get some of the savings. Thanks!
Hey, thank you! I really appreciate.
bought an '08 Xterra on the cheap. Changed these filters (soaked them with spray Febreze first) and now it smells like a freakin' ocean breeze in there. Change your filters!
The febreeze chemicals really aren't great to be directly inhaling. Better to just have clean air filters and use smaller air smell good deals
Try ozone machine
I didnt even know I had this! I bought my 2005 new and have 95k miles. My filters were equally as filthy; however, i cleaned them and reinstalled as they were in good shape with some banging and brushing.

Thanks Ry for the motivation to restore rather than replace!
Nothing quite like going on the cheap. New ones for $9 on Amazon. Sheesh.
Thanks for this video! I bought a well-used 2006 Xterra Off-Road in December 2018. Just changed the cabin filters today after viewing your video. Lots of leaves, dirt, and bugs on the filters.
I wish I could send you a picture of what came out of ours😂
Ry, big thanks for all your Xterra vids. I've used 3 so far for maintenance and your how-to's are flawless with great insights.
Thank you!
Bought a fixe year old X this year and just replaced the original cabin filter. It wasn't as bad as the one in your video butt was filled with dust (desert climate). Thanks for posting this one.
Was a little frustrating getting both back in but I got it! Thanks bro!
Thanks for video; just replaced filters after watching your video. Very good camera angles and detailed narration.
Thank you! Finally someone who does not say I talk too much. Lol
THANKS! I just purchased a 2014 Xterra with 55k miles. I removed the filters to check them and they were filthy. Not as bad as yours. Picked up a new set of Wix cabin filters today along with an engine air filter and replaced them all.
just great thanks for take a time and shows us how to make it man you are blessed
Any final concensus on the direction of flow? I replaced mine (07) last year the way I found them with the arrows up. In the majority of debate on other videos is for the arrows to go up? Arrows point IN THE DIRECTION OF AIRFLOW; Just like your home's HVAC filters ⬇
Ry, thanks for all your instructional videos. Though on this video lighting was needed to be very clear. It's nice that every job you do, you're explaining your steps.
Thank you very much.
Thank you for such detailed yet concise instructions. We now have confidence to DIY.
Glad it was helpful!
Loved the graphic demonstration of the debris the filter collects. Where did all the gum wrappers come from?
Excellent question, haha
Maybe they were wrappers from Spearmint Gun to give the Air a Minty Freshness! LOL
I replace mine every 6 months. Air filter too. Just got all my new filters from Amazon today. 🤘🏻
Thank you very much - I just went to a local store and made the switch - I broke the piece that I thought would have easily snapped off, but going to try to super glue it a later time - the pressure feels so much better ... I have a 2006. I call her My Lil' Beast. Going to do this soon!
found your blower motor video, and decided to check my filter too.....holy pine needles! lol...definitely sub'd....I have a 2008 Pathfinder, which is basically the same thing.
+nosoupfuru sweet thanks! Yea, blower motor and cabin filter tend to get looked over. Mine was so disgusting that it actually made my truck smell. When I swapped it out the X smelled 10 years newer. Hah!
no kidding...had mine replaced, it was full of dog food (no kidding)...
Just did this on the 05 Xterra I bought second hand. It was gross. It will be nice to finally have some cleaner hand. Thanks for making this video showing me how to do it.
I changed my cabin filters in my 2010 Xterra because of this video. Thank you.
🤘🏻
Where did you purchase your cabin filters and how much were they. Thank you.
I have a 2006 Nissan Xterra.
Nice video. i just recently installed for the first time these filters in my 2014 Frontier. Before I installed the new set i opened the hood, turned on the air conditioner and sprayed a disinfectant into the air vents near the wipers for a few seconds. No musty smell anymore.

Thanks! I used to change my cabin air filter in my 2004 Toyota Matrix now I'll do this on my 2014 Xterra!
easy enough, thanks bud! finally doing this today..
same filter for nissan xterra 2003, nice video bro
Thanks!
Very detailed videos. Thanks. Any fix for a sunglass holder not staying in place?
Didn't even know I had one. Thanks Ry
Any time dude. Hopefully yours is not as disgusting as mine was.
Just done, thank you for the video. Compared with an Elantra everything is a little more tricky. I was worried to break the left side of the glove compartment.
Glad it helped

Put a screw in the spot next to the tab where he said one should be but wasn't.
Hey RY Lovvve your video and your tips about cabin filter I've not chance my cabin since I purchased the car since OCTOBER 2012🙄 . Looking forward touch base with you if you STILL own Nissan Xterra

Thank for the video, just changed mine. Night and day difference.
RY your videos are great! Thanks
You're welcome, thanks for watching!

Thanks for making these Ry
My pleasure. Be sure to subscribe so you know when new ones come out! Have a great weekend. 💪🏻
Boy did you just save me a ton of money!
Love to hear that! 💪🏻
New question. Where is the OBD2 port fuse location. 06 xterra
Help: I have a problem with the heater on my 2009 Xterra, the fan is working fine,
but I am not getting any heat, even though the engine is hot.
Could it be the hot / cold air diverter on the heater block? If so, how to access it?
This is what I exactly needed 🖒🖒🖒🖒 Thanks bro
Anytime man!!
, holy shiznit bro.!!!!!!!
I've never seen a filter that bad or two for that matter.
damn. good job changing those
Thank you! I will attempt myself for sure.
Hello, My rooftop is jammed and it sounds that there's no way to open it. Do you have any suggestions.
hey, so first filter half was inserted with air flow pointing down, second half was installed with airflow going up. Can you clarify?
Yes, put both pointing down.
Just watched you video, very informative. Thank you.
I am going to check that right away!TX
Anytime! Hope it isn't as bad as mine was. Yuck!
Would this affect how hard the ac blows
perfect, another great vid
Thanks!! Very helpful! 👍
Is it the same for a Nissan Frontier 2006?
Great info. Thank You!
Anytime! :D
Thank you for your videos!
Both filters should be installed with the arrows pointing down. I have an instruction sheet that clearly shows this but unfortunately I can't upload/paste it here.
Yes, I installed it wrong in the video. I just pinned a comment to this video correcting it. Thanks.
How often should these be checked?
I think once a year should be good. Unless you park under trees, drive a lot of dusty roads, or live in an area with a lot of pests.
Yikes and mine were even worse, just bought an '05; removed the filters, vacuumed it out, turned the fan in high while spraying FreeBreeze into the filter hole, then installed the new filters, ARROWS POINTING DOWN ⬇ thanks! 👍
Will this apply to a 2000 xterra?
Dude I fucking love your videos 🤣🤟🏽
👊🏻🤘🏻
Great video 🙌🏽🍻🍻
Hey thank you man. 👍
You're welcome! 👍🏻
Geez, that was easy, the mechanic wanted $40 to do that including the filters. The filter on Amazon is $10
Filer quality varies greatly. We get what we pay for.
Thanks buddy!
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
Nissan charged me $120 for this service. Nice to know how to do it myself
Wow, 120 for that? nuts...

If you’re like me you still need to cut around the panel with a knife. Once those two tabs are cut out you can slide the new filters in. Make sure the arrows are pointing away from the blower.
The first airflow filter you put in arrow down...the second up? Am I seeing this wrong?
oh, I think I ended up putting it in wrong. However I say to put them in is the right way. ignore the arrows on the video itself. Sorry about thay
Ok, I did ignore the second filter arrow and went with what you said at first. Thank you for the help. I look forward to more.
Thanks for the info...the 2nd filter you put in with the air flow the wrong way.
Yea I already fixed it. Thanks though.
+Ry the car guy yeh your right because sometimes my blower will be loud for the first 5 min.. i wonder if thats why.. ill prob replace it soon . they arnt that much . i think 60 or 80 $
The air filter for my 2005 Ford Escape hybrid is in the back. Way easier to get too!
Sprinkle a bit of baking soda on the new filter before installing it.
Thanks
Why did you place the first one air flow down and the second one air flow up. A little confused, shouldn't they flow the same way?
+Brett Schulze hat was my mistake. I ended up fixing it.
Ry, did you end up fixing it by pointing both arrows up or down, I've watched 2 other videos for the Xterra cabin filter replacement on youtube and one guy said both should point up and the other guy had both pointing down???
Down. The arrow is meant to indicate the direction of the air flow.
Broke the tab that holds the cover in place. Couldn't find a screw that fit, so I used tape.
On you first filter, you put the air flow indicator arrow down, but on your second filter you said and put the arrow up. This is not correct. They should both be down.
+BeatleTracks yes, I ended up correcting in right after the video. Thanks.
are you sure about this? I just changed mine and the first filter (left) was facing down, the second (right) was facing up. These were clearly the original filters. Reinstalled them the same way I saw them come out. Should I be putting them both facing down?
My 05 Escape Hybrid has a cabin filter. It's in the back on the left side. Way easier to remove and install than yours.
Cool Cool

Base on your experience most likely are they telling me the truth?
so I should buy 2 filters not 1?
my 2010 xterra didnt even come with any cabin filters.. then after the tab broke i used a zip tie instead of the screw..
They just took them out and didn't replace them what the heck?!?
I dont know. But i read that alot of them didnt have them in from factory.. only some did.. its stupid to let people just breath in shit..lol
Eh it's just outside air isn't it? lol
yeh i guess so.. lol.. it feels no differnt with them in..
George Santiago you need to take out the blower I have a video for that go check it out
George Santiago once the blower is out you can get to both sides of the filter
I got it out and I cleaned the blower it was clogged with many things the rats dropped in there. The thing is on the left side big plastic housing. I fitted my hand in by the blower hole and I felt all of the evap blades totally clogged. It was like a net of dust and so. That is why it doesn't cool I know. Had my Pathfinder for 8 years before I discovered it had two glove boxes LOL.
Haha that’s awesome. I will say I do put things in there and completely forgot about them.
Did I misunderstand or did he put the first one down and the second one up?
I did it wrong in the vid. They should both go down. I pinned a comment to the top setting the record straight. Thanks.
Make sure arrows point down towards the floor
👍🏻
First you said the arrow goes downward, then you said the arrow goes up. So which is it dude?
Sorry for the confusion, the arrows go to the left.
@@Rythecarguy lol
Too bad it's not this easy on first gen Xterra. Had to remove the glove box to get to the filters.
Bummer, sorry to hear.
when u do the. balljoint of ur nissan bud
You put one filter in going the opposite direction of the other....
It’s true. I like to do wacky shit like that for fun. Just kidding. I realized after I made the video and had to go back and correct it. I like your profile pic btw. 🤘🏻
Mine smells like gas all the time in my car.
Check for an exhaust leak and always drive with your windows down.
2:50 wtf
.
OMG 2:52 so gross!
Right?!
