Here we go over the different supplies that you will need in order to hookup your generator to your main electrical panel by way of a power inlet box, generator cord, 30 ampere breaker, and a generator interlock kit.
This is the most economical and low hassle method of connecting a generator to your house in a power outage in my opinion.
MAKE SURE that you purchase the correct interlock kit! I ordered the wrong on the first time around so do your homework before ordering.
Also, if you have a generator with a 50 amp 240v socket then you should consider upgrading all of these components to match that 50A capacity.
Note that if you are going to be running the wire to your inlet box outdoors or in a damp/wet location you need to buy the UF rated wire. Conduit alone is not sufficient in order to use standard "Romex" outdoors and it does not meet code.

As part of my research regarding connecting a portable generator to my home, I have viewed many, many, video tutorials, some of them good, and many of them not so good. I would have to rate your video presentation as one of the best that I have seen. Your explanation is clear, your instructions are accurate, and you include a video list of everything that is needed. Well Done, Sir!!
I am enjoying your show. Thank you for your electrical knowledge. I have 30 years experience and still learn from people like you. As you know people here in California will have to look at your channel in order to understand what is involved an be able to communicate to an electrician . In California people will loose power from utility co. when there are high winds and natural fires. Thank you very much.
Sounds like I could learn a lot from you too! Thanks for the encouragement and especially for being a subscriber.
Blessings to you and yours!
Ben
I just watched several videos on this subject. This video is by far the clearest and best instruction. Thank you.
Looking forward to your followup installation videos on this! Transfer switches are pretty expensive so that interlock thing looks like a much more economical solution. Good timing to get this done before winter!
I have installed this and it works fine. I building and finishing my cabin wiring myself and this was my choice for a hookup for my generator. I live in country and have my main house on the same property.
Great video Ben. I just installed an interlock and inlet using your info as a guide. I have the same generator you have in this video. Inspection complete no problems. Thanks for the videos you produce!
this generator will be running 24/7
Excellent down to earth demonstration
Good info, dude, keep it up!!
Best tutorial on the internet
I've built power lines most of my adult life. We do take precautions so that we don't get hit with back feed. We always ground the lines and work between grounds. Sometimes people get in a hurry and make mistakes though.
People think 120 volts shouldn't kill someone. The problem is, your not sending 120v/240v down the line. Your sending 7,200 volts down the line.
The transformer next to your home takes 7,200 volts and steps it down to 120v per transformer lug. When you send 120v through the transformer in the opposite direction, you get 7,200 volts coming out the top. You could easily kill a kid playing next to a fence with a primary phase on it.
Was just sent this by one of the developers I do electrical for, Looks like a good easy option to a transfer switch. But some utility providers may not allow it, you'd have to check with your local provider and with local Building Codes. assuming you have the panel space for it too.
If you're planning to run your A/C units off a generator you're going to want to size up your wire size and breaker size to at least 50amps and refrain from using things like large microwaves....
New sub! Waiting to learn sensai!
Invaluable information, thank you. I might do this in the future.
Glad that is was useful!
Thank you for subscribing! Your support means a lot.

@@BenjaminSahlstrom If bought a Generator with a Neutral and ground bonded..... What can we do ❓❓
Hello my dear frend i'm frome Algéria that's Good jobs i like this
amazing video...question, what if the generator has a 3 prong L5-30P PLUG INSTEAD OF THE 4 PRON LIKE UR INLET BOX SHOWS?
If a generator is set up as bonded, and the grounds are bonded inside the inlet box, could that metal inlet box have some current traveling on it? And would that be hazardous to touch while the bonded generator is connected and energized?
Thank you.
I really appreciate your videos and their variety. Just curious if you ever plan to dabble in solar? Thx
klass video!
I have a 200 amp farm service panel outside and there's no way to make an interlock work on this panel. Is it OK to install in the house in the 100 amp panel? Would I turn off house breaker at the farm panel before running the generator?
Hi Benjamin, great videos. I have one well pump panel that is about 30 ft. from my house and main panel and that is for a well that is shared by 3 homes. I am about to connect an interlock ( no problem) but can I run both panels off of 1 generator, with outdoor panels that are about 30 ft. away from each other? I'd like to at least give my 2 neighbors the ability to have running water if the power goes out. We are in the Southwest and almost all homes have their panels completely outdoors. When I moved here I thought it was crazy but even new homes are still being built this way. Appreciate what you do brother. God bless.
Edit: - Can I use an interlock or do I have to use a transfer switch? Thank you.
It is a very good information. Thanks!
I have a question. How can I hookup a 110V(NEMAL5-30) from the generator to my main panel? Thanks
Im looking to do the same, but with a bigger generator. Curious, I forget what size wire I have feeding my panel, but its Aluminum, for 200amps. would that wire, and a 6gauge wire fit inside the sense sensor?
Question about the 30 amp breaker for the interlock transfer switch.
My breaker box is Square D Homeline with 125 amp. main breaker. I like to run my central air conditioner which has a 50 amp breaker. (maybe 4 ton) Planning to buy the Champion Power Equipment 100520 8750-Watt DH Series Open Frame Inverter generator.
So, shouldn't I install a higher-rated breaker for the transfer switch?
Does the code allow for the power inlet box to share the same conduit with another line so I only make a single hole into the house? In other words, I would like to run a 120 amp service out to a single exterior outlet served by it's own dedicated exterior enclosure separate from the power inlet box. Both circuits would be on their own dedicated circuit breakers. A single pole 15 amp breaker for the exterior service line and a 30 amp breaker using a generator interlock kit as you describe in the video. I would like to avoid punching 2 holes into the wall near the electric panel to keep things looking tidy. Thanks in advance.
Can install a combination of both a transfer switch and direct connect? For example, using a 12KW generator, can I connect the 50A outlet to the main panel using a interlock device, and, at the same time, the 30A outlet to a transfer switch? Otherwise, how do I get all available 100A into the house? Thanks
Can you install the inlet box 65ft from the breaker?
I have a Cutler Hammer box and the main switch is not at top center. I've been trying to find an interlock kit for it. Its an A series CMBE1212L200BS box. Any recomendations?
I realize this video is a few years old...is it okay to use a bonded neutral generator hooked up as described in this video using an interlock kit (without a transfer switch)? Wonder if Benjamin could address this "floating neutral" issue?
Have you done any research on Total Harmonic Distortion impact generator power?
For a 13000W generator, would a 50A plug, breaker, and 6 gauge 3+ground be appropriate?
Quick question. Should I buy a breaker with a trip circuit or a basic breaker? Does it matter?
Thank you for your great videos. Any suggestion how to mount the power inlet box on an outside wall with a UF cable feeding through the wall and using the rear punchout of the box for entry? My worry is that water could go between the box and the wall, then along the cable into the box. I don't know of any connector or strain relief that could be used with the rear entry against a wall. Could I just use a rubber grommet and surround it in plumber's putty? Seems effective but also seems guaranteed to drive any inspector mad. Alternative is side entry with a 90 degree waterproof connector and a short length of conduit into the house, but that makes the whole thing uglier.
I know this is old, but is there a reason not to come up from underneath? My plan for mounting mine is to use standoffs/rubber washers so water can easily drain behind the box...
@@brianwelch8941 the inlet is underneath to keep it dry while in use. There is no knockout there. Also the rear knockout seems perfect to run a cable directly into the box from inside never being exposed outside.
Can you make a video on how to add a main breaker to an existing panel? My main breaker is outside in the meter panel. I want to add one to the panel in my garage so I can add a generator interlock kit and a breaker instead of an expensive transfer switch.
Ben, I have a Honda eu7000is, eventually will get a second and run two in parallel. The run is longish, 80ft or so. If I want to run my 200a panel with an interlock, should I run 4awg-3, use a 30a hookup in the inlet box and 30a breaker at the panel and then when I am going to step up to two eu7000is in parallel, just get the parallel kit, replace the breaker at the panel w a 50a and the hookup in the power inlet box to a 50a and the wire will be good for the run? Is this beyond overkill to use 4awg instead of 6?
Can you use the same 240v plug for an electric car during normal operation then during a black out use the interlock and portable generator?
Can we install a 50amp plug and get a generator with a 50amp plug?
im looking for a system that will shut down the connectoin to the power grid when power is not running but keeep my gen feeding power to my home
Great video. Can you use 30 amps for a 12,000 watts generator?
50 amp
Hi , very informative. Question is that I have a pulsar 10000 watt peak generator and I'm not sure if a 30 amp outlet and breaker is correct application or is a 50 amp outlet and breaker required.
You are not required to use a 50a breaker and inlet box. You can use the stuff shown in my video as the generator should have both a 30a and 50a receptacle on it. The only downside to using the 30a is that you will only be able to use 7,200 watts of power from that one 30a plug. This is almost always enough for a typical house though so you should be fine. If you want to go with a 50a power inlet then you can definitely do that. The materials just coat a bit more. 50a is good for up to 12,000 watts. Hope that helps!
@@BenjaminSahlstrom thank you.
For 50 amp should I use a Romex 6/3?
What if you have solar on your home..with no battery backup..
Power goes off..Solar goes off...
Could i use Interlock Kit..or should i just use a Transfer Switch??..
Thank you. I live in California, in a rural area. I just picked up two jobs for this exact thing. People in my area were out of power for 3 to 5 days. PG&E turned power out for "safety" reasons. I was wondering when you were going to do the install? It would help a trainee like me. - Blessings back from Brownsville.
Will have the video up on Friday! Planning to do the installation tomorrow.
What areas do you service?
I just wonder why they don't make the 4 pole or 6 pole transfer switch? That has 2 or 3 pole on and 2 or 3 pole off and vice versa. I this case, we don't have to use the interlock kit that is very inconvenient and bad look?
My husky 3654 prong connector says 20 Amps. Will it work with 30 amp cord and 30 amp breaker
3650 watts. Guess the 20 amp protector on generator would trip first
I have a fifty amp hookup to my generator, what size braker and wire?
I have a larger portable generator 12500 starting watts/ 9500 running watts with a 50amp outlet and 50amp cord.
Would the hookup using a liter lock switch be the same with a larger generator? with the exception of using a 50amp inlet box and a 50 amp breaker . What size wire would I need for 50 amp?
Sounds like a nice unit! You will need 6awg wire to get that up and running and the other things you already mentioned. Good luck!
our utility does not allow the breaker interlock, you must use a regular double throw transfer box
Thanks for sharing that! Do you know why this is?
Benjamin Sahlstrom Its very simply one of these two choices. Either they have not seen the interlock, or because they said so. Just like your parents when you were young and asked why! Respectfully, Kevin
Hi just saw your video & subcribe. Not good at finding the materials for 50 amp generator. Any way you could give us links to parts for 50amp. Thanks
Hi Ben very helpful. What size wire should I use for my 50 amp outlet going to my fuse box. This is for my 10000 watt generator. Thank you in advance.
why do they not let up generator system to go back throw the power grid like soler
Change it out to a 30 amp RV Plug
In the case you back feeding and forgot to turn off the main breaker, do you think your small generator (6K watts) will power all your neighbor without trip the breaker on the generator? The generator will probably not even able to start due to the heavy load. Let alone to kill the line man.
This was a great video, I installed my interlok kit for my panel and set up the outdoor receptacle box; I appreciate your expertise, there were some that set it up with female receptacle on house and made their cable with two male plugs. So now I'm looking for how to properly make an inline portable watt meter (reference the included link, but it's not for 30 amp L14 30); I think I'm going to need two watt meters. Link: ua-cam.com/video/k_KuVj0XsE8/v-deo.html Thanks!
Can you use a single 30 amp breaker or does it have to be a double?
Depends on if you want 120 or 240
